Monday with Heather

With our GPS in hand (complete with British accent), we left around 8:15 for Irmo, SC (near Columbia) and a visit with my niece, Heather, and her children Jesse and Olivia. Stephanie and Randy had to stay home for school and work.  Stephanie is taking some courses at the college and working in the dining hall.

The last time I visited, the Eylers were living in their duplex.  Now they rent out both sides and live in a home near the church where Josh is youth pastor.

Josh was helping a friend move things from his mother’s house in Greenville, so we only saw him for a few minutes at the end of our stay.  He brought home a nice grill, two lamps, and a wheelbarrow for the effort.  The mom has Alzheimer’s and the home has sold.

We also got to meet Candace, Jeremy’s girlfriend – it’s looking serious – I can tell because he wants to bring her home for Christmas.  If she wasn’t a “keeper” Jeremy would not want to expose her to the scrutiny.  Heather gives her high marks, so I’m sure we’ll all take a liking to her, too.

Rachel and Carrie and Olivia played so well together we hardly saw them while we were there.  Jesse and Justin had a great time playing with trucks and soldiers.  The back yard has a turtle pond in it and the momma turtle had 5 babies recently.  Heather had explained that once the eggs were hatched, the daddy turtle had wandered away.

We were in the kitchen preparing pizza lunch (Kathy’s favorite) when Olivia came in with eyes as big as saucers.

“Mom!  The daddy turtle is back. I’m ‘sear-we-us’! Come see.”

Sure enough, he was back – and the rest of the afternoon was filled with the kids running in and out to give us a blow by blow account of what he was doing.

Justin:  The father is on the mother. (Thinking she might get hurt)

Jesse:  Yeah, they do that all the time. (Thinking she’ll survive)

Carrie:  Something strange is happening.  The father is stuck on the mother.  It’s weird.

Rachel:  The father is acting weird.  He’s up like this and the mother is like this.

Olivia:  I think they’re making babies.  That’s what Justin said.

Jesse:  Mom, why are they stuck together?

Heather:  Ask your father.

Heather(under her breath):  Daddy turtle is going to disappear after dark tonight, I think.

We left the Eylers around 4:30 for the two hour drive home.  On the highway at Exit 41 we had noticed a gas station with unleaded priced at $3.59.  But, alas, when we drove in the pumps were empty and we moved on.  There are huge shortages of gas here in the south.  We finally found another place for ten cents more.  The best we could do.

We found some KFC coupons in the car and Aunt Kathy treated us to supper.

WED:  Got this email update from Heather today...

It's always good to see you guys.  I hope Michele is feeling th same way with the sex education class her son got yesterday...........you can tell her we gave the male turtle away so its safe to come back with her whole family :)
