Lord Directed Living & Learning
Dec. 7, 2007
Tis the Season
I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry CHRISTmas season!
This year we are busy with Advent and the Symbols of CHRISTmas, then move into the 12 Days of Christmas and Epiphany. I'll post pictures of how they are displaying what they are learning through our Bible readings, discussions, activities and crafts sometime soon.
The kids are also busy making homemade gifts for those they wish to bless during this season.
Other things that are going on right now.....
I think next week we'll be teaching and reteaching some friends how to crochet. All the kids can crochet very well, except Braeden, he's 4. He has however, been begging to learn recently LOL. Guess Ben will have to teach him how to finger crochet over the winter.
We are in an early winter wonderland this year. We already have a TON of snow (began last week) and a ton more to come this weekend too. We can see the deer very well at the feeder behind the fence now that we are snow covered. We were blessed with 3 deer and a fawn visiting for an hour this week. Normally we only see 2 come at a time. Of course have several video clips and pictures!
This weekend I look forward to finishing "defurring" the house from dog-sitting from Nov. 17-27. We watched our 2 poms' mom, dad and step-mom ;op while our friends went to CA with their daughter and the 2 younger poms (half sister and full brother to our 2 poms). I finished defurring the family room and downstairs last weekend and the main part of the kitchen earlier this week. The kids did their rooms. I have the living room left to do and shampoo the carpet in there and in the family room. YIPPY! Can't wait til it's completely gone LOL.
I had planned on having it all done right away, but, who has that kind of energy during their monthly? NOT me. Nemo - the daddy - shed like crazy! I mean, I KNEW it was all over, and we were cleaning more than we normally do during our daily chores, but WOWZA (I am quite anal about a clean house, lol, but more relaxed then I used to be). Not sweating it, I'll just finish up this weekend.
Well, I had better run, I told the kids they can go outside this afternoon and play in all this snow, now they are going crazy over it and running to get lunch chores done ROFLOL.
While they are out, I will give love to all our plants, and get my weekly deep cleaning done in the kitchen since I was too tired to do it all earlier this week on the normal day (there are the normal daily chores but each part of the house has its own deep cleaning day). AND the sun is shining!!! That will make it even better, oh I love when the sun shines and fills the house!!! It has been hiding for some time now.
I think I'll put on some CHRISTmas tunes while I work.
Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Learning and Education
Teach a child how to learn and instill a love of learning, after a love for our Lord!
If you give this to your children, their goals and dreams are at their fingertips. Now give them the time to do it.
Sit back and enjoy the fruits as you are proactively available.
You will now see what education really is...in case you ever doubted yourself, your child, or others.
What education is to you may not be what it is to your neighbor, and that's ok.
Keep your eyes on the LORD. Seek God's will above your own.

Fall
Don't you just LOVE this time of year?! I do...and boy did fall weather come in with a bang! No warning or easing us into it this year at all. The mornings and evenings are cool with the middle of the day being just gorgeous and delightful.
I love this time of year for so many reasons. Colors, smells, physical changes, watching the animals scurry to harvest their winter supply, that cozy feeling it gives you (atleast it does for me) to get everything prepared so you can settle in for the winter days, curling up infront of the fire with the kids and books, adding the changes to our Nature Journals, etc. These are just the opposite of my other favorite season ~ Spring!
What's your favorite thing about Fall?

Notebooking HOW TO's and SAMPLE PAGES/PHOTOS
Here is a list of wonderful helps and visuals for those of you who are newbie's to this group and/or notebooking. Or if you are a veteran and just want so inspiration and refreshing! Have fun!
Notebooking Info. / How-To (some I have just listed in the photos link section but also have how-to info.)
Notebooking Photos and Resource Links
http://enrichment4you.com/LAJM.htm Me being the Visual Me, saw this page and thought, COOL! Awesome visual link for the kids to glean ideas for their own pages to make (not buy, lol) Click each image for a larger view.
http://abcteach.com/ I don't belong to this one, there is a lot of free stuff here though, I prefer www.enchantedlearning.com because we can get the patterns AND information all here, lol, if you aren't a member of E.L. you are missing all the fantastic early reader and fluent reader books! It's the best $20 we've EVER spent!
Some are a bit older, but you can bookmark them for when you need them, TWEAK what's there to her level and still enjoy it!
When searching for pages on a topic, make sure you search for exactly what you want. Some people forget certain words. I find TONS of great pages by always typing in "___ activity pages, ____ kids pages, ____printable pages, ____free pages, ____unit study/studies, or ____ theme pages'
So remember to BE SPECIFIC!!
You can also search for Electronic Notebook pages and PowerPoint Presentations and see a ton more :)
Happy Viewing, Searching and New Year!

IDEAS - Kinds of boards
Well, here I go again. The Lord provided some wonderful ideas today while chatting with a dear friend. I shared them with her after she brought up the subjects of:
Bulletin Boards (corkboard)
Chalkboard (shaped)
The chalkboards she is finding are not the size she wants (nor the price).
I told her to go to her home supply store and buy a sheet of plywood. Pick up some posterboard and make some templates in the shape(s) they want their boards to be (and size). Then, cut and trace those templates on the plywood. Cut out. While at the store, she also picked up a can on the Chalkboard Paint they now have. After the templates are cut out, they can paint the board and tada, a personalized chalkboard!
For bulletin boards, she said they are just too expensive. I agree. The idea of what could be used came next, I was really excited about this one because my kids have wanted these also.
Again, while at the home supply store, visit the insulation isle. Purchase the thickness that you want (I'd do the pink sheets, but any will do). Have them cut to the size you want/need them to be. Then, make slip covers (like a pillow case) out of fabric and velcro the end. You can even change the fabric to seasonal and/or holiday slip covers! Now that's a really personalized FUN bulletin board.
White erase boards? All we did is went to our home supply store, in the panel section. The bathroom board is the same stuff. We picked up a sheet for under $8 had it cut to size right there in the store and hung on the wall. You could even draw out templates on this so the kids can have personalized shape dry erase lap boards if you want, it's SO much less expensive! And look just how many you can make for such a great price.
If you want it looking professional, buy trim and frame it.
Clear as mud!?
What are some of your fun ideas for useful things?

Life is Education - Education is Life
I don't want to rush through topics just to say we've covered them. The kids will forget most, if not all, of the facts they learned about it in a week anyway, right? You are rushing so quickly it blends together in their heads. What IS the point of that!?
No, I'd rather take our time on things that are of importance to our child(ren). Choosing an interest of theirs and allow them to sit back and absorb all they want and need to about a topic they want to learn more about until they get their fill of it.
Then give them time to process what they have learned so they can turn it into a product of their choice, even if that product is simply telling me about it (no, not me questioning them, me listening TO them). I do not constantly require our children to produce a product just to show they have learned something. Why would I? No one makes ME do that to prove to them I know it, they'd rather me tell them all about it, right?
There is a time and place for written and illustrated product, and a time and place for simply listening to the joys of your children's hearts on topics they have learned about, and, a time for further questioning type discussions.
Why is it that as adults, our passions and things we choose to learn about are considered hobbies, but a child's must be considered and/or classified as school?
I ask you to ask yourself, what does SCHOOL mean to you? To me, one must first think about what EDUCATION is. It isn't school.
Education is learning all you can about things you are interested in, things that make you curious, even if that means just browsing the basics of it. Education is learning about something to further yourself, professionally and/or personally. Education grows and stretches you. It is NOT sitting down doing seatwork at a table for hours on end.
Everything in LIFE is EDUCATION. Education is life. Everything can be placed into an appropriate subject category. It's like saying 'so and so can't see past the end of his/her nose.' When we box up education, we suck the life out of it. You begin to see the glazed looks in the eyes of your family.
We need to open our eyes, ears and minds to what education is, and how the Lord made us to learn and utilize our world and our resources to learn and gain from it.

I thought I would stop in and say HELLO! Since, I now know my password on here again LOL. Yep, that always helps a person.
Yesterday was beautiful and sunny, I transplanted a bunch of snapdragon roots while the kids enjoyed playing outside...er uh, the boys enjoyed rope climbing the trees while people on the bike trail stopped to watch apparently cause they could see them hanging in the backyard HAHAHAHA!
I'll post a real blog soon.....after I figure out why this blasted thing refuses to upload my 'new' picture but took off the old one and gave it their own lol.
Have a great day!

Lord Directed Homeschooling - Lord Directed LIVING
I would like to share with you how this phrase came about too. My dear friend, JoAnn, and I used to call our families Delight Directed. When people would ask what this means, we would share that we pray and listen to what the Lord shows and tells us our family need to and should learn. He will show us particular things as a family, for our individual children and ourselves.
JoAnn got to thinking one day (most certainly talking outloud with the Lord :) ) and immediately shared with me, and coined the phrase "Lord Directed." We are Lord Directed homeschoolers. We LIVE Lord Directed lives.
We are not JUST delight directed, encouragaing and allowing the children to fully learn and immerse themselves in their delights and passions (thru informal and formal studies) - our families pray and listen to what the Lord is telling us to do and NOT to do. In all areas of our lives. He provides us with all of the right resources and tools to use for all of these things, precisely at the moment we need and can utilize them.
At following links, you can read more about a delight directed (LORD directed) way of living and learning. Because it is just that. You are not JUST Lord Directed HOMESCHOOLERS, your lives are Lord Directed PERIOD. You and your family have chosen to follow the path the Lord has laid before your feet and are living it daily, moment by moment.
Drink in everything you can at these links, pray (yes, you can pray with your eyes open, pen and paper in hand) wait, and listen. Sometimes you will wait longer than you'd like, lol. Do so. Pray and ask if He wants you to purchase any of these materials for your family, because they are not just for you. Your entire family will be blessed by these wonderful women's testimonies, experiences, and ministries.
All use the 'Notebook Method' as we do, and I promise it is NOT difficult!!! (More on that soon with tons of links for you WITH visuals!)

The next sublink from Barb Shelton has MANY of Marilyn's articles NOT on her site!!) **Unfortunately, this wonderful site is no longer available. I will locate their information and post it soon! See Barb's site below to read several articles by Marilyn.

God Bless You!
In response to a comment from joyismystrength on a recent entry....
Just new on the block and thought I'd stop by to say, "Hello".
I love that you call your homeschooling "Lord-directed" for shouldn't our whole lives be lived that way. You've coined a new phrase for me that I'm going to use with my own family, if you don't mind?
You certainly may use the phrase "Lord Directed" for your family. I am certain the Lord will be rejoicing along with the rest of us leading Lord Directed Lives.

Biblical History - The Lord's Way for Our Family
MOH and HOW
We have always home educated our children. This year they are 12yo ds, 9yo dd, 7yo ds, and 3yo ds. We are Lord Directed.
(See this blog and my dear friends blog for an explanation THIS blog click on "Lord Directed Homeschooling" on the right side bar and http://homeschoolblogger.com/outoftheboxmom click on "Lord Directed Homeschooling" on the right side bar).
1 John 2:27 "...the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him."
In September, we will be starting our Biblical History study. We are using MOH Volume 1 (Mystery of History http://brightideaspress.com/catalog.htm scroll down) and HOW Adam to Messiah Unit (Heart of Wisdom www.heartofwisdom.com ). I believe each of these resource study guides stand firm alone, and it was my intention to use them that way. It however, is not the Lord's will for us. PTL I listened ;o)
Isaiah 55:8-9 “ For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
The Lord wants me to share with you a visual into his way for our family to study Biblical History and to perhaps show you how you can SIMPLIFY and put together things in his way, for your family too.
During the time the Lord gave me to prepare the following things, He also put a burden on my heart for those of you reading this; so it may help him direct you to put things together in the way He wants for your family to study his world.
The Lord says to KEEP IT SIMPLE! If things you are doing are frustrating, overwhelming, complicated, confused, hard, easily angered, etc., they are not from him.
Galatians 5:1 "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."
Galatians 5:1 "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery." NAS
His ways are not hard, his burden is not heavy. Pray, ask, and listen. It is so important to just be quiet, still and wait patiently. Do not grasp at straws and get wishy washy while waiting for his answer. If you still aren't sure what you are hearing is from the Lord, simply ask him to continue to bring it to you if it is his will, and if it is not to take it away.
John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."
John 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come."
Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
You are looking at what and how the Lord told me to make and set up for our Biblical History study. I have listened and put into play some things he has revealed to me over the last year. I am so thankful for this. Certain things are not as easy to do as they once were for me, for various reasons, along with having a very active 3yo ankle biter and many other tragic things surrounding what has occured this year with my sister and her two daughters (please pray for them).
God is SO good! He told me to get it all ready and printed off so it's just a notebook reach away and we can spend the time studying and learning together under his guidance and wisdom.
Notebooks
I have arranged the pages on the photo site so they are in the same order as my Master Notebook. He told me to color code the kids this year, so they have chosen their color and I have the "cheap" folders for each of them paper punched and inserted into the Master Notebook with their pages printed and ready to be handed to them for each lesson.
I was to make as many electronic (computer) notebook pages as possible for the *key* activities and/or requirements of both MOH and HOW. The children can then fill in and personalize each of those pages creating their own combination of electronic, traditional and lapbook style notebook pages - whichever they feel lead to along with additional pages to create when they are inspired to (I have a blank page with the timeline header for each lesson for this purpose).
Notebook Pages on Photo Site
There is a duplicate page - Corresponding Chart - because it is also the first page of our notebooks (as reference). The kids' folders only have the Corresponding Chart to pg. 82 in them. The other pages are in my other notebooks (Master and Planner). The planner pages are not complete yet. They have the basics down right now. Before we reach each lesson and/or during, I will be adding specific Geography and Vocabulary we need to cover on our notebook pages. I will also add any hands-on projects we'd like to do as well. There is a list of the resource books that I purchased and already owned. The italic means I also have scanned certain pages so we can use the text and/or graphics for making notebook pages (as you can see on certain pages). We will be using these for our study of MOH Vol. 1 Lessons 1-13 and HOW Adam to Abraham. You can see what I have planned out and made thus far. These are also the only notebook pages I have made with the basic requirements and/or activities we are chosing to do for each lesson. I will be making the others with basic instructions during off weeks.
Routine for Study
I am to have as much as possible ready before we start after Labor Day. We are to study for 4 weeks and then take 1 week off so I can prep, create, gather materials, etc. for the next 4 week studies. AND most importantly, we are to study it SLOWLY and as indepth as their ages and comprehension levels will allow them to. The Lord has put this wonderful burden in my heart since 2003 to study HIStory in depth and chronologically.
He lead me to use TOG Yr. 1 Unit 1 (Tapestry of Grace www.tapestryofgrace.com ) in 2003 which taught me HOW to teach history, love it and not be afraid of it (weren't we all!?) before purchasing MOH Vol. 1 (even though I found it first). *I* wanted to use it then and the last few years but it never happened. His timing is SO perfect! He has now lined up all of my ducks - things that confused or frustrated me then are clear, easy, light and peaceful now - and His will for our journey to begin as we study Biblical History in the way he wants for our family is ready. o/
Basic OverviewTimeline
He told me how we are to do the timeline as well. We are still to do a master timeline notebook (using the book someone made for others for free). We are to glue all the timeline figures in accordingly and color them when we study them and add other text or graphics if we so choose. This is so they can 'at a glance' see where something or someone fell into history without flipping through a ton of notebook pages.
Detailed Timeline
We are to put a timeline header at the top of EACH notebook page created. This is so there is not any stress or overwhelming feelings about *HOW* to create the 'perfect' timeline for each child. We are to also have the timeline figures on the appropriate notebook pages. Their notebooks will be their Biblical History study as well as their detailed timeline. Why do more work than necessary? He said just add the line and text at the top of each page. Timeline figures we are using can be found at History through the Ages http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/timeline.htm
Memory Cards
We will NOT be making Memory Cards (these are to be done at the end of each week - every 3rd lesson). The 'time LINE' and 'text' will be the color Linda recommends in MOH again, why triple the work now? Line/Text for Quarter 1-2 lessons 1-18 are to be dark GREEN to represent "Creation and Early Civilizations" (Creation to 627BC) Quarter lessons 19-36 will be RED to represent "The Classical World" (see page xxvii MOH V1 for details). We may make a summary page after each 3 lessons - scroll down to p.82 for example (w/ Creation, Adam & Eve, Jubal/Tubal-Cain all on 1 page - 'original' is in the title) if we so choose here and there, perhaps we'll just do an oral presentation recap.
Timeline figures that are in the lineage of Christ will have a gold 'cross symbol' or perhaps the 'star of David' as it was his family crest (on his shield for battle). I think at the top right hand corner of the page. Timeline header text matches the HTTA figures. We'll also be discussing timeline dates for Creation and how you can date it by adding/subtracting the ages/dates mentioned in the Bible.
Maps and Geography
We are to present Geography & Maps the same as we did with TOG - using regular and/or overlay maps when needed/necessary. You can see I have one page that says Geography-Maps already. Some lessons have this activity, some do not. The reason being we don't know at this time, which map they will each choose, so I did not make those pages. They can easily be made from the blank page with timeline header on it.
Setting up our notebook
Our notebook is NOT to be set up the way MOH recommends. We are NOT to file papers by continent or country. We are to have a *Map and Location Key * and file it in the front of our notebook after the corresponding chart for MOH & HOW study. What it will have on it is colored square boxes of different colors. Each box will represent a continent or country. Ex: red box = Asia. On the right hand bottom corner of each notebook page, for Asia, the kids draw a red box and label it accordingly. Ex: "red box =" Asia: Iraq (Mesopotamia) (from MOH Lesson 2, Activity 2) By doing it in this order, it stays chronological at the same time as seeing geographically where it took place. They will not have to flip back and forth between sections to see what, when and where.
These first lessons (1-13 for MOH and Adam to Abraham unit for HOW) will probably be covered over this and next year. I don't know. We are going to study slowly and follow the Lords footsteps. It could take us 2 years. It could take us 6 months. Only the Lord knows.
Isaiah 55:8-9 “ For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
HE has put it all in to place HIS way for OUR family. This is the way WE are to do it. Pray about the way YOU are to do it. He has been working on this with me for 3 years (almost to the month and day at the time of this writing) so that *I* see it is easy and light. All these steps they each want you to do is not only overwhelming for me, but complicated, especially when you start combining main "Resource GUIDES" to use as 1 study (listed at the MOH yahoo group).
I am SO excited and SO thankful to our LORD for making my inner most heartfelt cry to learn his word and world HIS way for our family to become not just a dream, but reality. o/
Seek the Lord for all things and allow him to direct your path in every way.
Job 14:15a "You will call and I will answer you;"
May the Lord bless you richly in all things. Enjoy your journey.
John 10:27 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:"
Galatians 5:16-18 "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law."

Math - Place Value
I
have been asked several times where I come up with the things we
do. I must say how much I love EMC (Evan-Moor Company) CD (Carson
Dellosa) and Lakeshore Learning Company. You can go to each of
their sites and request free catalog(s) some have more than one level
or interest. http://www.evan-moor.com/ http://www.carsondellosa.com/ http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/
I first found about about Lakeshore Learning when I was in the day care
business. I went to our local office to cut a few things on the
Ellison Machine, and they had some free catalogs. I grabbed 2 of
the levels.I cut my and the children's favorite things from them and
paste or tape them into a fuel book. One of the new items that
grabbed my eye was their Place Value Practice Board. It sells for
$16.95 (if you want to, you can go here for it
http://www.lakeshorelearning.com - at the left side bar under "quick
order by item" type in RR594 - but wait first, read on.) This is what it looks like - again, it sells for $16.95
For those of you who know me, you already know that I would NEVER spend
that rofl. Maybe if it where $5, but I doubt it. Why would
I? We could make it for even less than $5. Please scroll down. See, I told you we'd make it! And it was less than $5.00!
We
used a half sheet of POSTERBOARD (shaped like a triangular cone) INDEX
CARDS (cut in half) our BINDING MACHINE (you don't have to, you can use
staples or rings) and HOT GLUE to glue the combs onto the posterboard
(you could just use glue to glue the back card down. Oh, and our
label maker (you could just write and paste.) The top blank
card does NOT represent zero. I just did that to show you if you
are not using the upper placements, we flip the blank card over as to
not confuse the child. Brooke wants to make her own (this one
is Ben's) using some shaped cards/patterns instead, and make it
smaller. She loves anything small. I will post that picture
on HERE when she does it. MY dh just announced he made reservations so I must run. Sounds like it will be YUMMMMY!

Mommy Time and Favorite Books
Tonight is snuggle night. Braeden has the cold back that just left a few days ago. Ok, so this is a new, different cold, but you get the drift. Poor little guy.
We are also the only ones home. The rest of the family is out at the family 'farm' working in the shop, getting equipment ready for this summer's business season.
We are snuggling up on the couch, reading books while Toy Story plays quietly in the background.
Braeden has decided over the past month, that he has a favorite book. I purchased it when he was just a babe, for the older kids. The book is "The Carrot Seed".
I am thinking about scanning a few of the 'family' images, the boy and the carrot and having the older kids help me come up with and make a lapbook style game for him. Even if it's simply fun matching with the letter for the words on it. We'll see what they come up with.
His second favorite book (that I bought at the same time as this book) is "Goodnight Moon". If he continues to love these books over the next year, we'll have to make a lapbook with him for each book.
Something else just came to me also. I think I'll trace the pictures on each page and make it into a coloring book for him.
Well, he's getting antsy again so I'll get going and see what he needs besides his Mommy.

Thus saith the Lord
After talking with the kids yesterday morning and sharing with them what the Lord said to me, I told them I'd like them to each pray and talk to the Lord also.
I said I'd like each of them to speak to the Lord and ask him to let them know what he'd like them to work on and learn about this year. Then, sit quietly listening to what he brought to them.
Isaiah 55:8-9
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,"
declares the LORD.
9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
As they sat there quietly talking with the Lord, I came upstairs with Braeden and took care of a few things around the house.
I went down to them later and asked each of them if they felt the Lord speak to them or if they felt they needed to pray more and speak more to the Lord about this matter.
They each said He brought several things to their mind \o/
Starting with Ben, who is going to be 7 in February, he said he heard quite a few things right away. Here is what he shared:

I was very happy with what I heard And felt even more peaceful than I had after the Lord spoke to me, hearing what had been said to each of them.
Many things fell right in line with my list. And why wouldn't they? Isn't it funny how each time this happens, we are still pleasantly surprised! "...O ye of little faith" always comes to mind. No matter how far along in our Christian walk we are, we will continue to grow in faith, trust and wisdom each day. Praise you Lord for your unconditional and eternal love!
We had a wonderful time yesterday discussing all of our lists.
This morning, they each made a list of the Bible verses they will be using for their Bible Notebooks and Scripture Memorization (for this and next week). To my delight, Zack asked if he could copy his in both print AND cursive!
Well, there goes the phone, lol, my older sista! Gotta run!

A Blessed New Year - Family Meeting w/ the Lord
|
Wishing you all a blessed new year! Today
we'll be having a family meeting and discussing the things the Lord
told me we should delight in this year. I will also be having the
kids share what they feel the Lord wants them to personally learn about. We'll talk about what we'll be doing in productive time along with options for productive free time. Being
Lord Directed Homeschoolers, I keep a list and journal of the things
the Lord shares with me to learn as a family and for
individual children. I also observe my children and listen to
their conversations while listening to the Lord, taking mental notes. We
always 'take off' (although we are never off, a new adventure or 2
takes place) from Thanksgiving thru the New Year; we will be easing
back into the active role of delights and studies this and next
week. What I mean by 'active role' is for the family to be productive in our formal AND informal delights and studies. The
'active' part also meaning, mom
being completely available in what they are doing
during productive time. Being
actively available if they need something, have a question, need to
look something up on the internet or computer encyclopedia, etc.
as they are delighting, learning and becoming wise and
knowledgable in along their journey. (Not doing my own thing, I
have my 'own time' at night and on weekends for this.) I
am cheerful and peaceful with what the Lord brought to me.
I'll share what the children tell me the Lord shared with them also.

Puzzles
|
Puzzles.
I grew up on them. My aunt always had a card table in the LR with
a 1000+ pc. puzzle on it. And luckily for me, we were always over
there. I've decided this must be one of the reasons I have great
Spatial Awareness. My kids also love puzzles. Zack (who is now 11) was putting together 100 pc. puzzles when he was only 3. Over the years, we've gone to and fro w/puzzles until recently. They've gone puzzle crazy Ben (age 6) has quite a nack for puzzles. And he's also very good with them. Today, I found out January 29th is National Puzzle Day. WOW! How fun is that! Yesterday,
we finished our Christmas shopping for daddy yesterday at Fleet
Farm. Talk about puzzles! I love their ToyLand. It's the
best for Games and Puzzles, so we stock up each Christmas w/ new ones. Each of the kids along with myself, purchased a 500 pc. and 750 pc. puzzles for $1.49 each. Brooke, who is studying Lions (she has put together a Lion Notebook) found a wonderful puzzle with 2 young lioness'. Zack found a beautiful city (as he stated) which just happens to be Monte Carlo, Monaco. Ben
purchased an awesome, just beautiful cathedral Orvieto Duomo, Umbria,
Italy. Along with 'Wonders of the World' Machu Picchu, Peru. I chose to get Temples of Ramses II, Egypt for when we study Egypt - again - we love Egypt Fleet
Farm also has 3 or 4 different '10 Deluxe Puzzles' sets that have 10
puzzles ranging from 500pc./750pc./1000pc. in the box. Just
beautiful puzzles. On sale right now for $8.00 I shared this w/dh and he said I will need to pick them up for birthday presents! I am thinking though....I'll choose 1 to celebrate National Puzzle Day next month WOOHOO! The kids are busying themselves on the floor putting together their puzzles (on 2 different boards). I
think I'll have to pick up atleast 2 of those puzzle mats and get
another 5ft. table in the Creation Station for puzzles only. These
are not the only puzzles the kids enjoy. They also love Word
Searches. I grew up doing these all the time as well! They
are amazed at how fast I can do them, rofl. Actually, I was shocked
that I still 'had it' rofl. Some things are not forgotten
apparently, just stored away Just like riding a bike. One never forgets! Well,
now that I am truly awake, we need to get baking! We are making a
few different batches of cookies, mini banana bread loaves and also
some italian pasta salad for Christmas celebration at Grandma's tonight. Enjoy your day!

My Children...how creative!
|
My children. Yes, they are mine. Ok, so they are God's children and he's loaned them to me Do
you ever think what wonderful children you have? I mean, we all
have our 'moments' but truly, we have wonderful children. And I thank God for giving me a sense of humor. I love laughter! The latest creativity: I'll
back up to yesterday for a second. We were downstairs in the
family room. Brooke was on the computer with her friend, while
Ben and I played Phase 10. Braeden was coming to and fro the Creation
Station; and Zack was doing...something...in the Creation
Station. What
exactly was Zack doing? I didn't know until I saw him run
upstairs to get something. He came down in full uniform.
Paper uniform. He,
was Santa. He had made himself a paper beard w/hair. He
wrapped his limbs w/red paper. He stated that he was making
himself a Santa costume for Christmas at Grandma's this Thursday.
Now all he needed was black for the belt. Oh how hilariously creative it was. During
the paper route later, he stated that his beard was a bit itchy and he
needed to put something under the 'mustache' part. He decided
that felt would work ok; Brooke thought batting may be better for him. This
morning, I lay on the couch downstairs. I had my back facing them
and enjoyed listening to their conversations and thoughts. Zack
decided he doesn't like the full paper uniform and needs to make
himself a material one. Yep, he needs to sew himself a Santa
costume. They
proceed to search the 3 boxes of fabric for red and black. He
finds a deep shade of pink...perhaps that will have to work -
Brooke digs deeper for him. I believe, from what it looks like
from here, she found some red. Ben
is now in need of making himself something as well. He comes to
ask for advice. "Perhaps you could be Santa's elf. Santa
always has elves helping him," I say. "You could even wear your
green pants you have on and save time and fabric." He isn't
convinced. OH !!
Zack has just stood back after cutting out his pattern for his shirt
(front and back). "That means I now have to sew these shirts
together," he says with crossed arms and serious face. Benjamin
thinks he needs to add something and starts to help. Help not
wanted or needed apparently. Zack firmly states, "I know what I
am doing!" Would
you like to know how he made the pattern for his shirt? We don't
have a 'real' pattern. He laid a long sleeved shirt of his on top
of the fabric, traced it w/permanent marker and cut it out. Too
hilarious... Ben and Zack are now tracing Zack's legs onto a
piece of material. Ben thinks Zack will need more, Zack isn't
sure. He needs Ben to cut the material right above his foot....but don't cut my foot off! Zack has decided he isn't going to sew the suit. He is going to safety pin it to the clothes he's wearing tomorrow. I
love these moments. If you would have asked me yesterday what we
had planned for today, or what I thought the children may decide to do
in their free time - this would not be on the top of the list. My
dh will think they've gone crazy, and probably silently debate, "I'm
actually letting them out of the house like this?" But never,
would he not allow it, lol. He does his... "my kids are as crazy as my wife" -look- then he must -think- "oh my, they surely are insane!" then he -laughs- and decides "it could be worse" (I'm sure he must decide this) He
then must think how blessed he is because he gives me a hug
and says, let's go. Or could it be...he knows he's stuck with us-
the way we are and/or
he doesn't want to break our hearts with the creations the kids have
worked hard on during the day to show him with such enthusiasm upon
coming home(I know some days he must surely think we've gone simply mad, teehee.) He plays along so well, lol, that's forsure. So, we'll keep him too Zack's
Santa suit is almost done, Ben is working on something-oh a pillow
case- and Brooke is finishing up in the shower; which means, I best get
dressed and moving. We have a few last minute gifts to pick up
for daddy and Suzie Cat.(A friend's cat, we have puppies!) Making a Santa suit, who would have guessed!? Not I.

Please Welcome and Pray for....

Please welcome - Josiah Michael was born December 6!
He is my baby sister's first baby
Please pray for - Denise (his mama) She was taken in for emergency surgery on Wednesday evening. It was her gall bladder.
Can I say this...why, are pregnant mom's NOT told this can happen?
Ok, so we found out about Placent Previa during the first week of my pg w/our last child, Braeden.
Now, we learn about Gall
Bladder disease, which can happen during (and in hind sight, they know
this is what was happening during Dee's pg) OR after child birth.
Talk about SCARY!
REQUEST - Please
pray for a quick and heathly recovery for Denise. She and Josiah
had JUST gotten nursing down (on both sides) when this happened.
He did have to have a bottle of formula during/after her surgery before
she could pump.
She said he did take it (the
family was amazed at his knowledge that something was wrong with mommy
and how wonderful he was w/everyone else - awake the entire time she
was away from him preop, during and postop.)
He snuggled right into mama
after recovery, comforting her. Later on, he wanted to nurse,
lol. She was able to come home yesterday afternoon. Aaron
(dh and proud daddy) and Josiah were able to stay in the hospital w/her
so that was wonderful.
He got a tad constipated from the
formula, but I'm sure by today (talked last night at 830) he was able
to pass all of his stools w/out problems. If not, I gave her some tips
if she thought she needed to help him out before heading to his
prescheduled dr. app't. later today.
PTL she was able to have the laparoscopic surgery rather than the
larger incision our mother had 2 years ago for her emergency gall
bladder operation.
I am wondering if any of you have heard of this? (Along with
appendisitis being the second common problem for pg women said a few
sites I found while researching and trying to calm myself down after
hearing she was in surgery, lol)
The doctor's didn't give her as much post operation diet information as
she would have liked, especially compared to what our mother was
given. I seem to only find things similar to what they said on
the internet - no fatty foods (np there, she hates fast food, lol, no
many fried things either).
Does anyone have a 'can't miss' site for us to read about this they would like to share?
I am finding a lot out there, just not the type of information I
want. Right now I am laughing at my friends across the world who
have said, "Who needs google when we have Andrea!" I'm still searching
Love to you all!

Yes, we are still here!!! In our Winter Wonderland!!
I haven't forgotten about my blog. No, exactly the opposite. I am actually working behind the scenes on a "Poetry Tea Time" blog. I have been asked many times over the last few years about everything we do/use for our Poetry Tea Time. Recently, I was asked again, so I thought I'd blog about it. I
am including ideas for you to use (that we do), what I've heard or seen
from others who study poetry, books we love, CDs/Tapes we love,
fantastic websites to use, resources we use (and how you can use them
for free until you can purchase them), etc. I plan to
work on it again while the kids are outside in our TON of snow.
Yep, we got more than 8 inches the other day and it just kept snowing
on and off throughout the night and kept on going through yesterDAY and
night. So a TON we have. This of course calls for a snow
day. Not that we MUST - Life is Education - we are always
learning; we tend to take it extra easy from Thanksgiving - New
Year's. Ok, I seem to need to blog a few small ones today to update on different events that have happened the last 2 weeks. Off to the next blog!!

Cooking, Baking and a GREAT new find!
My
dear friend Kat came to visit us for the entire first week of
November. She and her dh moved to TN over the summer
and we HAD to go thrift shopping during her visit. She informed
me the
stores there are NOT as wonderful as we have here in the valley.
Ok, so we're spoiled...we only have 3 GoodWill's here lol. We have 3 of almost every store it seems.
Simple Cooking Fun by Sharon Draznin
What a wonderful book! Oh am I fortunate! The Lord put this fantastic book -just calling to be notebooked-
in my path two weeks ago. This book covers everything from Home
Ec. and Reading to Math to Science to Social Studies/Geography to
Language Arts and just plain FUN!
I can't wait until after Christmas when we can start it! Keep reading and you'll see why we're going to wait, lol.
You can get this book at amazon.com new or used. I found mine at GoodWill for $2.99
And what perfect timing He has! Ok, so I know this, but don't you just love it when He taps you, reminding you of it.
I have planned a wonderful Christmas gift for 3 of our four
children. (Ds-11, Dd-8, Ds-6 and Ds-2) They have always
loved cooking and baking; we taught them as soon as they were
tall enough to stand on a step and could reach. They now can cook
by themselves. Of course they have also always helped bake - as
my 2 year old is now - ok, he does more than that, he
has always had to be right there during cooking and baking since he was
9 months and figured out how to crawl on the bar! - but this year especially, they dove into baking w/out assistance also.
SO I decided I must create a fantastic Christmas cooking/baking basket
gift. I am filling a sterilite basket (Walmart $1.99) with goodies to
help them in the kitchen. Included (so far) is a five pc. mini tool set
-really cooking/baking utensils - ('bag' of them from Walmart $3.49), 4
cup measuring cup ($tree), set of 4 mini sauce cups ($tree), and a set of 2 mini mesh strainers
I need to pick up a new set of measuring cups w/spoons ($tree), an 8oz
measuring cup (.94 Walmart), small round cake tin, small square cake
tin, mini muffin tin, and mini loaf tin (ok, so I really am needing the muffin and loaf tins for myself also but since they are taking over...
I am also going to have them pick out their favorite material.
They will of course think it's for making a homemade journal or
something, lol, so I'll let them. I am going to make each of them
an apron and matching pot holders. I am hoping - I need to
call their great auntie - to get their names embroidered on
them. Auntie has that very fancy (expensive) sewing machine that embroiders
I am making them each a handwritten recipe book containing my
recipes. This is what sparked the full gift idea. Don't you
just love handwritten recipes?!
We own a comb binder, so I will be binding them this way. (We also own a hardbound binder too, but that's 3-4 hours of work just putting the books together - EACH) I haven't decided (I am starting to write the recipes in easy to follow steps, especially for the 6 year old) if it will be a 1/2 sheet or full sheet of paper. I am leaning towards half sheet.
As I began thinking about this, God totally gave me the neatest
idea. Put the recipes on only the right side pages. This
way, when they each are making the recipe, we can take a few pictures,
print them off and file them into their recipe book as the left page =D
What a treasure book of memories and treats these will make when they have a family of their own!
They will be able to pull out their childhood recipe book and go thru
them w/their children. They will see pictures right in the book
of their parents throughout their childhood. (Ok, so I'm envisioning the memories these books can and will make teehee)
As our children grow, they will be able to add their own favorite
recipes w/ pictures all the way up to a 1 1/2 inch book (the largest
comb) I am also adding 2 handwritten recipes we have from my mother and my mil...funny, they are both pancakes recipes lol.
Wow, I just realized something too. The kids have always helped w/cooking and baking. But they didn't start cooking all on their own until they wanted breakfast cooked, lol. I don't do breakfast. Well, ok, I used to not. I do now on most Saturday's. (They are up early for paper routes.)
When they wanted bacon, eggs, sausage, french toast, pancakes and the
like, I told them they'd have to cook it. I wouldn't. I
know, meeeean mama!
It worked though. Our now ds-6 started with the supervision of
his sister, when he was almost 5. They got out their ingredients,
opened the cabinet where the Swedish Pancake recipe hangs, got out the
griddle and turned it on, got out the blender and made everyone
pancakes. Of course I was in the living room drinking my coffee
and/or tea, waiting to be served - as I checked my emails - in case
anything would have happened.
After that, they started cooking things for lunch and supper. I
do think we started with them frying the hamburger. The rest is
history. They still of course have more recipes to learn for big
meals - but are always helping with it - so they do know the gist of
them.
They have really been paying attention to the steps in preparing the 'dishes' and not just wanting to help peel, cut, stir, etc.
Well, wow...I've been in the Firetime chat at http://www.homeschoochat.us for over and hour and a half and it's time for bed. I will just have to add more about this either before or after Christmas.
I know I must scan a selection from the book I mentioned (before then)
so you can have a sample from it to know what I mean about notebooking
it. The more I read it the more I can't wait to start. The
kids are going to love it. Good thing we get to cook yummy things
throughout it
God Bless!
