The king called a conference because of the problems, but no common ground was found, and the only achievement of the conference was the commission of a new translation of the Bible known as the 1611 King James Version.

Prince Philip of Hesse was a committed Protestant of the Reformation period. Unfortunately his marriage was poor and he had not had a marital relationship with his wife for many years. As a result he fell into illicit affairs that plagued his conscience. In his state of trouble he requested council from Protestant theologians; Luther, Melanchthon, and Bucer. They agreed that the Bible did not forbid polygamy and that it would be okay for Prince Philip to take a second wife while keeping the first also.
