An Old Fashioned Girl...

A look at Victorian styles and clothing worn by “old fashioned girls”

"Polly Milton never questions the way she is – until she goes to visit her friends in the city. Her friend Fanny looks too glamorous to be Polly’s age, and wouldn’t be caught dead playing in the snow or visiting with her grandmother. Will Polly ever learn to be like the fashionable girls? And does she even want to?… "

Sometimes being old-fashioned it right in style.

                                       - "An Old Fashioned Girl" written in 1869 by Lousia May Alcott.

What comes to mind when you think of Victorian Fashion?..........

Perhaps you think of Gibson Girl hairstyles, large hats and pretty white blouses with lacey collars. Well…those were styles that were fashionable during the Victorian era. In this post we will discuss those garments and perhaps you’ll even want to try “an old fashioned girl” hairstyle.

  -Victorian Blouses

1906_jun_blouse.jpg picture by wintercreek misspotter-poster.jpg picture by wintercreek  gibson_girl1.jpg picture by wintercreek

Most blouses of this era were white or cream. Lace and trims were often used to give each blouse a different look and provide the wearer a way to show their personality.

The sleeves were usually puffed at the shoulders and tapered down to a small cuff that was normally fastened with small pearl or shell buttons.

Sometimes the entire blouse was constructed of small pieces of lace and delicate fabrics. This gave the blouse a very lacey look, but took hours of time and sewing to achieve the proper fit because the blouse was sewn in such a way that you could see no seams.

“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies”. –Proverbs 31:10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In “An Old Fashioned Girl” Polly worries that her dress is plain and unfashionable, but her mother soon encourages her by saying...........

“your dress is proper and becoming as it is, and the old fashioned simplicity is best for all of us. I don’t want my Polly to be loved for her clothes, but for herself, so wear the more simple frocks….and perhaps you can show girls that a happy smile and contented heart are better than any ruffles or dresses designed in Paris.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 -Victorian Hats

myfairpub15.jpg picture by wintercreek  1906_lesmodes_sep_french.jpg picture by wintercreek  Victorian_lady_in_green_with_feathe.jpg picture by wintercreek

Oh,…..hats, hats and more hats! During the Victorian Era hats were all the rage and you never went out of the house without some kind of hat.

If you were the proper fashionable lady your hat would be decorated with dried flowers, feathers, beads, ribbons and other assorted finery. Some girls prided themselves on being able to wear their hat at very odd angles and still managed to hold them in place… This required the use of lots of hat pins and ribbon ties.

“She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.” –Proverbs 31:21

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 -Victorian Hairstyles

In the book Polly wore her hair swept up out of her face in a style that we would now call the "Gibson Girl". It was a simple and elegant style that could be dressed up or down....you could wear it with anything in your wardrobe and I think the same holds true for today.

I've always enjoyed the style, but had never done it on my own hair....so I thought I'd give it a try. By following the instructions from Intimelyfashion.com  I was able to do it. I think I'll need more practice if I plan to do this alot, but it was fun to do....just make sure you have enough hair pins on hand.

This was very fun....here is an article writen in 1911 on how to do your hair.... I really enjoyed reading it and the pictures were wonderful. Click here to read it 1911 hairstyle , oh this was very good too....Pretty Hair

"Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.” –Proverbs 31:25

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beauty and style are not the surest passports to womanhood.....  some of the noblest examples of womanhood in the world, have looked quite plain in outward appearance. A woman’s worth is to be estimated by the real goodness of her heart, the greatness of her soul, the sweetness of her character; and a woman with a kindly disputation and well –balanced temper, is both lovely and attractive, even if her face is plain and her figure imperfect…..

               -  Daughters of Destiny…. complied and edited by Noelle Wheeler  (I LOVE this book)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  - Movies that I recommend set during the “Gibson Girl Era” …

These movies also have an old fashioned charm and good morals.  (Not to mention very pretty costumes…)

Rose Hill: Hallmark Movie……I love this movie very good. I would tell you the plot, but it might give something away. ,but I highly suggest it.

Sarah Plain and Tall, Skylark (the sequel): Hallmark movie starring Glenn Close. These movies are so good….and Sarah’s clothes are very pretty…yet practical.

Anne of Green Gables (1,2,3) : I consider these movies a classic. What more can I say?

Miss Potter : I recently just watched this movie of one of my favorite authors. It was very well done and stayed true to her life story… I love how it shows her drawing some of the most beloved children’s stories….Who doesn’t enjoy Peter Rabbit?

  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for reading my post….

     Sincerely,

             Brielle

Hi Brielle,

I came by a while back and inquired about the pricing on a costume. I know you're probably really busy, so don't worry about not getting back to me then. I was just wondering about the approximate pricing for a dress...is that too vague? Perhaps one from Pride and Prejudice or POTC or a similar movie... still too vague? LOL

I am really impressed with your sewing skills - I am rather a newbie at sewing. Your blog is great - I really enjoy reading it. Talk to you soon!

Blessings,
Jess

I love the 'old fashion girl' clothing and hairstyles. Miss Potter's clothing and hair are too sweet and romantic. I sometimes wish I could live in the era where women were feminine just in their clothing and hair.
I often wonder how I would look in beautifully styled hair and a flowing dress?:)
Nice Post!
Have a Good Day!

Ah, so nice to hear from you. I have your email still sitting in my inbox and I really will try to reply. I am really exciting about the gown!! Don't be surprised if you find something in the mail. wink wink.

And you tickle me pink with all this OFG stuff! I LOVE IT!!!

And "I don't mind getting caught in the rain"... I don't think I would too much either, after much thought. Elizabeth got caught in the rain and then Mr. Darcy ended up asking for her hand when she took shetler! LOL! I don't think there are any Mr. Dacry's waiting under any places 'round here! LOL! drat.

Hope you have a WONDERFUL day!

Love you!

Hello Mandy,
I got your message...=P That is INCONCEIVABLE! You Meany!

I love the post, you didn't tell me you posted!
I might have to steal some of those quotes, if you don't mind. When my hair gets long enough (maybe next Christmas...2008 Christmas I mean) you should try those on me. =)
I need to get started on some of those style blouses for me...after my pants are done of course...

I read a little bit of your Daughters of Destiney book when you were in Michigan and It looked very good....should I buy it/read it? Oh, speaking of...Have you thought anymore on our So Much more books? I mean doing them together? That is if you still want to do them together...=) I do. Maybe before or after sewing on wednesday?Or the weekends....since I'm there anyway. =)

See you later,
Becky,
P.S.
That Message really was wicked! And unfortuanately I had seen that before and forgotten about it!

Hey Brielle,

Thanks. :) I may make some adjustments here and there, I'm never totally satisfied with templates, but oh well. :P

Thanks again. Yes I love the sashes, you did send two. I was going to wear one on my head, but it looked better with two around my hips.

Sure you can use some of the pics. I don't have that many full body pics, but I do have a couple...

Hi, neat post, I love victorian fashions, they are not my absolute favourites, but they are pretty. I can't wait for a new post, and I am sorry for not commenting in so long. I wonder what your next posts will be about? Maybe a coustume you have made...
By the way, just how many coustumes have you made? Do you wear them regularly, or are they special, and hanging in a closet for special occasions? Don't answer if you don't want to, but I am curious. :)
Talk to you later!
Luv,
Miss Kitty

Hi Brielle! I enjoyed reading this post. I love the Victorian era. Girls dressed so femininely, had such good manners, and were so accomplished in feminine arts. If only the world were like that now. :-)

Have a good day!

10/21/2007 - Hi!

Posted by Joyfulservice at 21:15

Hi!

I'm an 18 year old homeschool graduate who loves to sew and wear costumes. :-) However, I don't have much time to sew...
I was wondering, do you actually sell costumes? If so, how much do they cost? Do you sew them yourself?
I really enjoyed reading this post, "An old Fashioned Girl" is one of my favorite books, and I love the "Miss Potter" movie. :-) Have you seen "The Inheritance" (based on a book by Louisa May Alcott)? Some of the dresses are really really pretty. :-)
Have a great day!

Joy
