A look at Victorian styles and clothing worn by “old fashioned girls”
"Polly Milton never questions the way she is – until she goes to visit her friends in the city. Her friend Fanny looks too glamorous to be Polly’s age, and wouldn’t be caught dead playing in the snow or visiting with her grandmother. Will Polly ever learn to be like the fashionable girls? And does she even want to?… "
Sometimes being old-fashioned it right in style.

What comes to mind when you think of Victorian Fashion?..........
Perhaps you think of Gibson Girl hairstyles, large hats and pretty white blouses with lacey collars. Well…those were styles that were fashionable during the Victorian era. In this post we will discuss those garments and perhaps you’ll even want to try “an old fashioned girl” hairstyle.
-Victorian Blouses

Most blouses of this era were white or cream. Lace and trims were often used to give each blouse a different look and provide the wearer a way to show their personality.
The sleeves were usually puffed at the shoulders and tapered down to a small cuff that was normally fastened with small pearl or shell buttons.
Sometimes the entire blouse was constructed of small pieces of lace and delicate fabrics. This gave the blouse a very lacey look, but took hours of time and sewing to achieve the proper fit because the blouse was sewn in such a way that you could see no seams.

In “An Old Fashioned Girl” Polly worries that her dress is plain and unfashionable, but her mother soon encourages her by saying...........
“your dress is proper and becoming as it is, and the old fashioned simplicity is best for all of us. I don’t want my Polly to be loved for her clothes, but for herself, so wear the more simple frocks….and perhaps you can show girls that a happy smile and contented heart are better than any ruffles or dresses designed in Paris.”

-Victorian Hats
Oh,…..hats, hats and more hats! During the Victorian Era hats were all the rage and you never went out of the house without some kind of hat.
If you were the proper fashionable lady your hat would be decorated with dried flowers, feathers, beads, ribbons and other assorted finery. Some girls prided themselves on being able to wear their hat at very odd angles and still managed to hold them in place… This required the use of lots of hat pins and ribbon ties.
“She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.” –Proverbs 31:21

-Victorian Hairstyles
In the book Polly wore her hair swept up out of her face in a style that we would now call the "Gibson Girl". It was a simple and elegant style that could be dressed up or down....you could wear it with anything in your wardrobe and I think the same holds true for today.
I've always enjoyed the style, but had never done it on my own hair....so I thought I'd give it a try. By following the instructions from Intimelyfashion.com I was able to do it. I think I'll need more practice if I plan to do this alot, but it was fun to do....just make sure you have enough hair pins on hand.
This was very fun....here is an article writen in 1911 on how to do your hair.... I really enjoyed reading it and the pictures were wonderful. Click here to read it 1911 hairstyle , oh this was very good too....Pretty Hair
"Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.” –Proverbs 31:25

Beauty and style are not the surest passports to womanhood..... some of the noblest examples of womanhood in the world, have looked quite plain in outward appearance. A woman’s worth is to be estimated by the real goodness of her heart, the greatness of her soul, the sweetness of her character; and a woman with a kindly disputation and well –balanced temper, is both lovely and attractive, even if her face is plain and her figure imperfect…..

- Movies that I recommend set during the “Gibson Girl Era” …
These movies also have an old fashioned charm and good morals. (Not to mention very pretty costumes…)
Rose Hill: Hallmark Movie……I love this movie very good. I would tell you the plot, but it might give something away. ,but I highly suggest it.
Sarah Plain and Tall, Skylark (the sequel): Hallmark movie starring Glenn Close. These movies are so good….and Sarah’s clothes are very pretty…yet practical.
Anne of Green Gables (1,2,3) : I consider these movies a classic. What more can I say?
Miss Potter : I recently just watched this movie of one of my favorite authors. It was very well done and stayed true to her life story… I love how it shows her drawing some of the most beloved children’s stories….Who doesn’t enjoy Peter Rabbit?
