• Feb. 27, 2008 - What's a Girl to do?

Hello Friends!

Are you doing pretty well this week?  It is well here.  It seems busier than usual, but there hasn't been much change.  We woke up to snow and slick roads yesterday, but by noon it had melted off.  It is very cold.....brrrr!  I am just not much of a cold weather gal.

I don't know about you, but my "to-do" list is a mile long!  My kids are so busy, and it's hard to keep on my toes with all they need to do and learn.  Oh, I don't teach them everthing though, they are becoming independent learners.  I just see myself as a "facilitator" most of the time.  However, my first born is a natural teacher and has been doing many fun things with her younger siblings.  Most days they do pretty well with that, sometimes it falls apart.  But we just try again another day.

I think I have talked before about my friend Jill, who is a homeschooling Mom with many of the same ideas and methods that we have here.  We are "kindred spirits."  If you have ever had the pleasure of hearing one of Jills conferences you have to agree with me that she has the sweetest voice you have ever heard!  I LOVE listening to Jill.

Jill coined a term; "Project schooling."  It's a really neat way to describe the hands-on, familiy oriented type of learning she loves to do.  The whole family gets involved in different projects, and they learn so much along the way as they work together.

One of Jills projects is the Girlhood Home Companion.  Have you seen this magazine?

It is a beauty.  I am not just saying that because I have contributed a few articles and photos to it.  I just love it.  Jill is an artist and an author and has created a feast for the eyes, and for the soul.  Very few magazines out there are truly beautiful.  I always loved Victoria magazine, do you remember that one?  I enjoyed the softness of the photos, the way they were composed; but there were a lot of advertisements I didn't like. And frankly, I can't remember ever reading one of the articles in Victoria!

The Girlhood Home Companion has one thing in common with Victoria; beautiful feminine photography and artwork.  But that is where the similarity ends.  The Girlhood is different, for a different purpose entirely.  I don't just enjoy it because I love to look upon beautiful things.  My soul desires that which is good and beautiful and true.  These are the things I want to share with my daughters.

What is theGirlhood Home Companion about?  It's about this:

"During the Victorian era, when life moved at a much slower pace, there were distinct periods of development in a girl’s life: babyhood, childhood, girlhood, and womanhood. I have seen a marked difference between the girl my oldest daughter used to be, and the lovely woman she has become in Christ. One thing I firmly believe is that girlhood is a priceless training ground that should not be rushed. Make the Girlhood Home Companion a tradition in your home."

 Mrs. Jill Novak

You know, there just isn't a whole lot out there for our lovely young girls today, as far as media goes.  We want to bless them with something Godly to read, to learn from, and to read together with them.

We desire to minister to our children, in all we do.  It is our desire to keep them safe in the world, but help them to not be of it.  The world we live in today is full of fast paced scenes of our children growing up way before their time.  But this brand of "growing up" is not God's plan for our girls.  We want them to grow in the knowledge and grace of the Lord.  We need to keep them in the Word, and not "of" the world.

I appreciate resources that help me do that.  Don't you?

Girlhood can be such a fleeting time; let us not squander it on empty words and images.  Fill it with wisdom, beautiful words and images, lessons and inspiration.  I know just the place where you can find those virtues; in the Girlhood Home Companion!

Please leave me a comment and let me know if you have ever had the blessing of seeing a copy of this lovely publication.  Let me know what you like best about it!  If you have never seen a copy, please check it out on the website.  Also, I would like to invite you to comment so I can put your name in a hat to win one free copy!

Blessings!

Nancy Baetz

I recieved the Soul Seeds a couple of days ago in the mail. What a really neat idea! I think they are very cute, and they sound like a great way not just to encourage daughters, but sisters, too! I haven't used them yet, but I am sure they will be helpful and sweet.

Thanks again for hosting that contest!

I have looked at this several times online, and wondered about receiving it. I too loved Victoria magazine when I was a girl, and still have all of my back copies in storage, as I just couldn't let go of those beautiful pictures. I don't really recall reading very many of the articles either! How funny! Do you think my 6yo dd would get much out of the Companion? She does love all things pretty and girly, and her reading has just taken off in leaps and bounds. Maybe it's time to try something like this.

Hope I win a sample! Thanks for offering this.

I am so glad you liked Heather's gift, Eyebright!

And, yes, I think it would be wonderful to read to your 6 year old daughter too. Any time spent together is wonderful. Although the GHC is geared towards slightly older girls, 8+, you can sit and look at it together.

I got out my last issue and am just going to look through it here and pretend my daugher is 6 again.

The cover is lovely, and the theme is "Mothers and Daughters Holding Hands." When you start to leaf through the pages, you will see sketches of flowers, antique photographs, and each of those things will spark conversation with your daughter.

"Lace Gloves and Table Manners" is a wonderful column about etiquette from times past. Hmmm, could any of this be useful today? Talk about that and see!

There is a wonderful poem about the word "Can't" on page 7. Then Jill wrote an article called "The Companionship of Godly Character" on page 8. This could be used as a study, done in several parts, with your girl.

On page 21 is a lovely "Copy 'n' Cut project to store your Bible Memory Verses in, although I personally would have a very hard time cutting it out of the magazine. I might have to ask Jill if it's ok to copy it and print it out on my computer!

There are wonderful recipes, of course to be done side by side with your daugher. And more poems! Learn some of them together!

A six year old would love to hear (or read herself is she was able) about "Our Goats" by Miss Elizabeth Novak! And from there she could read the Little Women's Gazette, which is a "young writer's project" right there within the pages of the Girlhood. Your daughter could even submit something she has written!
My conclusion? Yes, a Mom and her 6 year old girl could enjoy this magazine together, or even each one on their own. Most certainly!

Thanks so much for commenting!!
Have a blessed day,
Nancy

Hi Nancy, thank you for adding me as a friend, I would be honored to do the same. We already subscribe to The Girlhood Home Companion and LOVE IT!!! It is sooooooo beautiful both in words & art work - I simply cannot pick a favorite but I do love your Words of Wisdom, Lesson in Faith article. I will definitely be resubscribing when my subscription is up. There is such a need for good magazines for Godly girls in training. We recently had to drop a couple of the girls' gift subscriptions to Christian publications that did not reflect our convictions of training them up as Keepers of the Home. Blessings to you and your ministry! You have a lovely home here. I hope one of my dear friends here wins the free magazine.
Blessings,
Your New Friend,
Jane
btw: did you know that Victoria is back (since Christmas) - I do read their articles too, but.... :)

I wish we could have come out to see you guys again, too. I hope you all can make it here sometime.

I've seen about this magazine before, but never actually seen one. I'm going to try to look at the site again this week. I have met Jill once before here in Tenn at a homeschooling conference. She gave me one of her Family Writing books.

Some of you have mentioned getting a subscription to the GHC. While Jill has done that in the past, now she is offering current editions and past editions in single copies and sets.

The work that goes into this lovely magazine is HUGE and you can tell by looking at it. Jill does all the graphic design work herself, and she and her family do all the editing and production together. Plus, add homeschooling and homekeeping to this equation, and a few other situations thrown in for good measure! It all comes down to family being a priority, and as much as Jill would love to crank a magazine out every quarter, that is not what the Lord would have her to do right now. (You can see it's not "cranked" out anyway. It is lovingly created from scratch--with the Lord's guidance each time.)

Jill doesn't know I am sharing this with you :) but if you know any of her history, you know that the work she does is sometimes more "painstaking" than she would let on. Believe me, the GHC is a labor of love, and much, much more.

I hope you will tell your friends to come by and comment. They will be so glad you did! Spread the word, ladies!

Blessings,
Nancy

I've never seen a "real life" copy of the newest version of Girlhood Home Companion, but my daughters have 2 copies of old versions (black and white copies) that we were blessed with a few months ago and they have enjoyed them SO much! We would LOVE to have a copy of the new magazine!

I have 2 daughters, one 11 and one 10. My desire is for them to grow into godly maidens. I loved the old Victoria magazine, too, and would love to have a copy of this magazine to check out. My girls love receiving magazines. What a great idea! (I'm also a history buff and would like nothing more than the gentle arts to come back once again.)

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 16, 13, 11 and 9 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
