Last night, we had a wild storm here.
And I do mean wild. At one point, around 10 pm, I had just unplugged the modem for the 4th time for the evening, because I could hear more thunder. I learned my lesson a year ago, with 2 fried modems, after a lightning storm, not to leave your modem plugged in.
Seconds after I unplugged the modem, I stood up, and standing right in front of the window I heard a loud POP, like a giant, snapping his fingers, then bright light filled the room, immediately followed by a very loud CRACK, then rolling thunder. This meant of course, the lightning was directly overhead.
What this meant for Jessica was, “watch mom fly across the room going “whoa, whoa, whoa! And grab my arm”. As if Jessica was going to protect me? I have to laugh about it now, but at the time it really wasn’t funny. It was rather frightening. (and I love t-storms, but that was a little creepy, I must say). Kev had already gone to bed and within seconds, he came into the room. He heard me squealing from the other side of the house, lol.
Checking the official statement from Environment Canada this evening, I see there were no less than 12 reported tornados, or funnel clouds reported. TWELVE! That’s why I said it was a wild storm. We do get tornados here, but not twelve of them (or funnel clouds) in one night.
That storm passed, and the horrible humidity and unseasonable heat with it. But there’s another one in my house today. I’ll name this one Hurricane Carla. (That name was officially retired in 1961, when on September 11 (of all days) it struck in Texas, killing 43 people). While the real hurricane Carla struck 3 years, 3 months and 1 day before I was even born, the mess it left behind seems to fit me today.
Do you ever have one of those days that almost EVERYTHING gets on your very last nerve, dances around on it, and says “nanny nanny boo boo!” ??

Well, welcome to my day. It’s almost over, and while I’m glad, I’m also lamenting my rotten attitude all day. It’s just been one of those days – one extreme to another.
If I had to list the good things about today, I’m sure I could, but right now the only really good thing, is that Jordan has been carrying around a science text book all evening, studying the food pyramid. Just because she found it fascinating. This is one of the books we had on the shelf that I thought we’d likely never use. That’s what I get for thinking.
Ohhhhhhhkay… that was earlier. I’m better now. Maybe it has (in part) to do with the kids now being in bed? Or maybe it has more to do with us praying together at devotion time. I hope it’s the latter. I hate feeling so edgy with the kids, and that’s the way it was all day.
Now for some highlights:
I’ve been redecorating the girl’s room. I’m almost done! I finished the sky blue ceiling today, so on Friday (Lord willing), I’ll get a small can of off white flat paint, for the puffy clouds, and the glow in the dark star stickers. For their new curtains and window seat cushion cover, I’ll be stopping at the Zellers (it’s like WalMart, but much smaller) and looking through the floral sheets they have in the clearance bin. If I have enough fabric left, I hope to make a couple of toss pillow cases for their beds, as well. A girl just cannot have enough pillows on her bed, you know?
Rachel found a baby Robin in the grass (see a pic here), and brought him in the house. Rachel is like me, for some reason birds just let her pick them up, when they quickly fly away from nearly everyone else. For the billionth time, I said “Rachel, you cannot bring wild birds in the house, just call me from the yard and I’ll come OUT to see the bird”. So out the door we went with little Robby, and I put him in the grass. He was either injured or stunned, so we kept the animals in, until after dinner. He was still there after dinner, but much more alert, and chirping for his mama, so I picked him up and put him the nook of the walnut tree. Mama & Papa robin were nearby, chirping and squawking up a storm, loosely translated from bird-speak to English what they said was “get your stinky human fingers off our baby, you wretched biped!”
After the kids went to bed, I came to the kitchen to pour a cup of coffee , and spotted a rather large raccoon just strolling down the laneway. Jessica ran outside to take a picture of him, and the race was on, through the cornfield. She actually thought she could catch him and get his picture. He left her in his dust… apparently one camera shy ‘coon.
While sitting here writing this, wondering if the baby Robin was still in the tree, a brilliant red Cardinal landed on the back of the garden bench in the faerie garden, chip-chip-chipping away.
And we never did get to our Bible lesson review today…
Maybe tomorrow. I probably learned more today than I could have taught them, anyway. I guess you could say the Lord is homeschooling me, as I homeschool the kids.
