A really nice Sunday

Posted in General

Do you remember what it's like to run through the grass, barefoot, with the only genuine thought occupying your mind, is being the first one, to grab the only available swing?

Do you remember what it's like, to hear that there will be ice cream for dessert, and hope that no one remembers that you said you were full, at dinner?

Kids are amazing - they are so simplistic, and so real. I say we all act like kids again, all week long. Wonder how that would work out? When the branch manager at the bank confirms you really are overdrawn, a simply flopping onto the floor and screaming, should get the desired affect.

We had a really good day today. It was our church's 135th anniversary, and there was a guest preacher & gospel quartet. The quartet is just astounding, they remind me alot of the men who used to sing on the Gaither Gospel hour (George Younce and those men, I can't recall the other's names). The message was good as well - he preached from 2Samuel chapter 5, on how God does things differently, at different times (I think he was going for the whole culture-shift thing, but he never really spelled it out), for His own glory. He did touch on how churches tend to develop a bizarre habit of defending their traditions, even if those traditions no longer get the job done. Kev and I had a good talk on the way home about that - that while some things do change, some things never do. He gave me alot to think about.

Anyway, after church we had a fellowship lunch, and that was nice. Ruth got to eat, so she was too busy to be paranoid of all the people there, which gave me a chance to talk to some folks I never get to talk to.

It's hot here today, so after church the kids all put on their shorts and went outside to play. We got the pools out (we have several of those inflatable-ring-top-kind) and started pumping to see which ones are good, and which ones need patched. One is completely toast, and one is do-able - so tomorrow I get to patch the do-able one, and will begin filling it up.

See this? this means we're under a severe t-storm watch. They're saying 90k winds (which in real speed that's roughly 54mph) and large hail, with the potential for tornadoes. I read the weather alert to Jessica and her reply was "why did we move to Kansas!?" (lol, she cracks me up sometimes). I told her to stop complaining about the weather (God knows exactly what He's doing) and she said "fine, I'm going up to pack". Pack what? A parachute?

We do have an emergency kit in the basement, but it's been a year since I checked on it, so I really need to take care of that tomorrow - and restock it.

Last year we had 3 tornadoes touch down frighteningly close to here, and that's what finally prompted me to stop procrastinating about this emergency kit. (This reminds me of a story Ray Comfort once told about the foolishness of those who use the "try Jesus" approach to evangelism. If you know who he is, you already know what I mean - if you don't, I can't remember the exact details right now, so do a google on Ray Comfort and Hell's Best Kept Secret - it's pretty good).

We had a new bird at the feeder today, a Pine Siskin. Which should never be confused with Snake Pliskin. Besides, Snake never ate at bird feeders, as far as I can remember. (for some dumb reason, every time I hear that bird's name, I think of the Snake Pliskin character in Escape from NY. Yeah, tv has had no influence on me... pfffft). I did get a few pics but only of his hind end, he wouldn't turn around for me, and then a rotten Grackle chased him away.

So... this is it - the last week of school. YEEEEEEEHAW. We're all excited for summer vacation. Weather permitting, we're doing the last week of school, on the deck. After that, I will begin moving our school room back to the game room, and putting this year's school books away. Until now, they're all kept on shelves, but I think I'd like to box them up and put them away in the closet, to free up room on the shelves. Whatever we aren't using again in the fall - will be going in boxes. This of course means... we'll need to go to more yard sales to buy more books!!! We love yard sales. Where else can you get hymnals and 100 year old story books, for .10 or .25 each? Nowhere that I'm aware of.

Kev just had the tv on the weather channel... this beast of a storm is alot closer than we thought - so I better wrap this up and unplug my modem.

For those of you also finishing off your school year this week, I wish you the very best week, and a blessed beginning of your summer vacation!
