It really is amazing sometimes, just how this thing called "the blogosphere" works. Last night, during my regular reading of my favorite blogs, first I read someone comment on the content at the Vision Forum, about classics for young boys. It had been a long time since I'd been there but it was good reminder of the available quality resources out there. You can read more about that here: http://www.visionforum.com/boysadventure
The reason this caught my eye, is because I have been sort of half-heartedly researching some good resources for Samuel, my 4 year old. I say half-heartedly only because it's discouraging to find great resources then look at the price tag. It's a real challenge to find quality material that we as a large family can afford. Samuel has learned to read, and it's my heart's desire to see him be encouraged in that, and have a wide variety of resources to that end. Fostering an interest in reading will create hungry minds, in little people - and this is always a good thing.
So going through my list of blogs that I read daily, I came across Adrienne's post. Some of you readers might know her, her blog (one of them, I think she has like 30 or 40 blogs now) is here: http://homeschoolblogger.com/Adrienne
Adrienne wrote about a resource that her and her daughter are enjoying, and it looked intriguing. Homeschool radio shows. Hmmm... I clicked the link. I read, I read some more, then I read some things outloud to Kev. The more I read, the more excited I got - and I'm the big skeptic in the family.
I signed up for the weekly show, and downloaded the one they send for signing up. I was jazzed, I must say.
Today after lunch, after Ruth was settled down for her nap, Jordan, Rachel, Samuel and Kev and I sat here in the game room and listened to the show I downloaded last night: Hans Brinker. The kids loved it, I loved it, and Kev loved it.
There are a ton of homeschooling resources online, but I must say hands down, this is the COOLEST resource I've come across in a very long time. It's entertaining, it's educational, and it's FREE. Yes, you read that correctly, each week a new show is sent out, and each show is FREE.
It's advertised as homeschooling resources - but it's really just a great thing for families - or anyone who likes a well told story.
At the website, you can also order cd's, with additional resources, and just so much more. Okay, enough of my blathering - here's the site (I created this little button, I hope they don't mind the free advertising & graphics):
Classic Educational Programs
from the days of Old Time Radio
Especially for Homeschoolers!
(enter here!)
Check them out - listen to a show with your kids. We'll be making this a weekly part of our homeschool - starting today.
By the way - they also have a blog right here at Homeschool Blogger:
