Watercolor Ponies

Angela has a poignant post on her blog about her three-year-old getting so big and time flying by.  I made the mistake of reading it just as Wayne Watson's Watercolor Ponies was playing.  Or maybe it's not a mistake.  Maybe God is trying to impress something on me.

Because I have three children under my six-year-old, I think of six as an OLDER child, not a little boy.  Yet my six-year-old is still a tender young child.  In the Middle Ages, he would've still been in the part of the household where the women and children stayed, not in with the boys and men.  Why do I treat him like he's so big when all he wants is to be my oldest baby?

For those who have never heard the Wayne Watson song, I strongly recommend it to parents of young children-- especially young boys.

They look a little less like little boys every day.

Is mixed with a bitter cup

One day, my little boys won't be little anymore and there won't be any more watercolor ponies (or chalkboard anteaters).  I'm going off to treasure the ones I have, while I have them.

When I came here and read your blog, I too was in tears. I am guilty of treating my oldest (only FIVE) as if she is all grown up too. Two days ago, Nathan and I were watching video of her when she was a baby. Even though she was just a baby at almost 2, her little sister was learning to take her first steps at almost 1. I watched her try to take her "turn" trying to walk (even though she had been walking since ten months) and it dawned on me that she has always been the "big sister" and had almost skipped being the baby. I purposed right there in my heart that I was going to try and realize her age more and let her have five year old moments more.

It's amazing the expectations we place on our oldest children without even realizing it!

I wanted to let you know about a really good book that my DS loves. It's called "I'd Be Your Hero" by Kathryn O'Brien. It's about a little boy who wants to be a knight for his Mommy - wants to protect her and honor her. It's got really good Bible verses included with each page. DS wants to get it from the library all the time. I think we'll just have to buy it. :)
