Nov. 6, 2008 - Election Day 2008 |
What a beautiful day to go out and participate in the process of letting my voice be heard. I had heard there were long lines in some places. I do not understand that concept. Too few polling places? To few machines? I don't know, but that is not right.
We went after story time at the library. We picked up my brother and brought him with us. Yes, I took all six children.

We had to park a little ways down the street, but that is OK, it was a beautiful beautiful day. Perfect election day, day.
We vote at an elementary school that the children would attend if we did not homeschool them.

My dear friend, Alisa, who keeps me up on everything political that I need to know about was a poll worker. I love seeing a friendly and young face behind the table.

I love her. Do you see her stash of knitting/crocheting stuff to the left of where she is sitting? Yes, she is like a Boy Scout, she is always prepared. She also read my blog regularly. Thanks for letting me put you in my blog Alisa.
My girls watching intensely as they wait for me to sign my name and get my ballot.
In order, its Bethany, Miriam and Abigail.
Here are the children looking on as I prepare to vote. The ballot was really long because we vote for judges here in Iowa. Seriously. I voted no on all the judges. I don't know anything about them, so I voted no. Well, what I know about many judges in Iowa, I am unimpressed.

Here is the machine where my ballot went in. I voted around 11:30 and was number 189. Sean voted later and was around 400. I suspect there were a lot of early voters in our precinct.

After I was done voting, there was no line, we went outside and waited for Uncle Ted to get done. The windows of a classroom were open. I tried to keep the children quiet, but they were having so much fun. I wonder if the kids in school were jealous of my children. I would have been.

Did I say it was a perfect fall day? Cuz it was.
I did take a video of them playing, but I can't get it to upload. Maybe another day. |

Did you read my post about Iowa Judges? I think it's crazy that they expect us to vote uniformed. Well -- that's what they expect... but I was informed this year. I did my research. That's why I vote absentee... just because I want to have time to research each judge before I vote. I voted YES on 2 of them that were appointed in the 80's. I was hoping Branstad had appointed them. LOL All the rest NO.
ONE judge has only an 77% approval rating amongst all the attorneys who filled out a survey.
So -- how do we know if she was retained?
It's all super secretive. I want it to be more OPEN and HONEST!
Ok -- enough ranting. Great post! I would have been jealous too. Ü |

Nov. 7, 2008 - voting |

It was my first time working a national election, and WOW what an education. Out of 800 plus another fourty or sixty, dont remember exactly, we had 466 persons walk thru the door and cast a vote, another ten or so provisional ballots, and a considerable number of absentee ballots. All in all they figure a turnout of about 73 percent. In September for school board, we had about eighty voters. Quite a contrast. It was amazing to me to see the number of voters go thru our site and knowing that our precinct is one of the smaller in town. There were three or four times we had a line waiting at the booths, and almost twenty persons waiting before we even opened the polls. An amazing turnout which is exactly what I was praying for. An unbelievable number of persons who had never voted before, or who were registered that day. Its really nice to see the families who bring their children, because children who are exposed early and regularly will more likely be lifetime voters themselves. These are just some of the things that struck me about this past election day. Additionally, I'd like to add that I am truly honored to be called friend, and I love you guys too.
Alisa
ps.....I finished a baby blanket, cut out a bunch of circles for a banquet seating chart, and not only started, but finished a hat with the pattern I had my daughter look up and deliver to me......in September, I made a WHOOOOOLE bunch of dish cloths, and a scrubbie or two. Not nearly as much free time during this election. A |
