Dh and I had a wonderful time at our local homeschool convention on Friday and Saturday. Sometimes when I go to convention, I don't think there will be any worthwhile workshops but I am always amazed afterward at the amount of encouraging wisdom I gain at this event every year. My favorite speakers: Ginger Plowman - I went to two of her workshops and I saw too much of myself in the list of things "not to do". All those things moms find themselves saying out of frustration when we can't get our children to behave. She spoke about drawing out the sin issues in our child's heart to help them learn what they are doing wrong. And then training them to do what is good in the eyes of our Lord. So often we tell our children "no" but we don't tell them the right way or have them practice it. So I picked up Wise Words for Moms and Don't Make Me Count to Three. The latter one I've had on my list for three years because it was recommended by a friend and I still hadn't bought it. You know I never do seem to get around to buying books for me to read. Theresa Moon of Comunicators for Christ - What an amazing teacher. The students she had with her spoke articulately and convincingly and they were all under 16 years of age! I wanted my oldest dd to start public speaking training soon but after their workshop I am convinced I need to start now and I want my youngest children to start training. Even at their ages of 5 and 3, they should politely shake someone's hand when being introduced and answer questions clearly and confidently while looking you in the eye. Maggie Hogan - I always like to hear Maggie speak. She can speak on just about any school subject successfully. This year I went to her workshop on bringing the fine arts into your homeschool. Another one of those things I'd like to get in but never actually do. I am inspired to not just do crafty type art projects but to do more artist studies. I can add that into our unit studies with a little tweeking. KONOS occassionally has book suggestions on certain composers or artists but I have not taken advantage of that nearly enough and I can always add one in when they don't list one. Rebecca Keller - Gravitas Publications - DH went to two of her workshops and came away with a desire to READ. Now that is something considering my dh prefers to spend all of his spare time playing music and very rarely picks up a book other than the Bible. We purchased some other new books as well: Find The Constellations by H.A. Rey Sir Cumference and the Sword and the Cone by Cindy Neuschwander Sir Cumference and the Great Knight of Angleland by Cindy Neuschwander Defending Traditional Marriage: It Starts With You by Willard F. Harley Jr. 4 of the books from the Heroes of the Faith series for dd. I've got her reading the one on Mary Slessor right now since we are studying Africa. We also purchased several new Little Jewel Books from Rod & Staff. I just love those for the little ones. DH and I made the final decision to go ahead with Rosetta Stone French. It was a BIG decision to make but we figured it's worth it since we can use it for all of her French through high school if she doesn't finish before then and we can reuse it for the other two kiddos. DD is very excited about it - probably mostly excited because I told her we could stop doing the current French program we're using and just start right in when Rosetta Stone comes in. LOL We found a few other odds and ends including a couple Drive Thru History DVD's, Dover coloring books (I love those), writing paper for ds, 11yo dd's grammar curriculum, 3yo dd's workbooks from R&S and she is already loving them and begging to do school! Also we got an Adventure's in Odyssey audio series about Faith and American History. Those are the results of our convention. We had such a fun, rejuvenating time. I can't wait to get it all into action now! |

I'm glad I did this time. I look forward to reading it and implementing the techniques I learn. Already I have been trying to ask my children questions about their choice of behavior and guiding them to the scriptures that encourage us. I hope I can keep it going and improve as time goes on and my children benefit from it.
But she convinvced him that if we are going to defend creation science then we need to know what other people know. So he's planning to read about Galileo with dd so he can start getting to know more about science and scientists. I hope he keeps going after that!
