Creating a Love for Lifelong Learning

Sep. 12, 2008 - Nature Creations

Last week Gabriella (6) and Benjamin (3) collected nature items from our backyard and created these projects. Obviously Ben's was a little more guided, but Gabriella decided on her own to make a collage of the items she found.

I got the idea for Ben's letter from http://www.notimeforflashcards.com/

Aug. 27, 2008 - Cicadas

Posted in Nature Studies

Now, I am not a real huge fan of bugs - insects, spiders, anything like that. Bleck! They give me the heebie jeebies (no matter how hard I TRY!). I am such a girl!  But I had to take pictures of what we saw on Saturday and Sunday.

The first two are what we found on Saturday. I told Jonathan (my dh) all about them and then he found them on Sunday on our way out to church. Those would be in the last two photos. It is shedding it's shell! We actually WACTHED this happen! We saw it move right off. The cicada itself didn't really move, except out of it's shell. It was kind of a slow process. I wish my pictures were clearer. :( It looks like two cicadas, but there is really only on (on the bottom two pics).

In the 3rd pic, the shell is on the left and the cicada is on the right. In the 4th pic I took it from the other side, so the shell is on the right and the actual cicada is on the left.

But last night when we looked at our big tree, we found empty cicada shells all over the bark! Ewww! LOL

Jun. 5, 2008 - Our Butterfly Bush and Flower Garden

Posted in Nature Studies

Here is the start of our butterfly bush - we'll keep you updated on it's growth! It shouldn't bloom until late summer.

After that is a picture of our front flower bed that I plan on cleaning out today. :)
