Hey there dearies!

I have SO missed you guys! I promise to be back on schedule this coming week with our ezine. I have many NEW articles that I think you will LOVE. Today, I am coming up from my pile of "to-do's" to just
drop a note about our virtual seminar next week.  Smiley

We have planned an amazing workshop with Jim and Sheila Carroll from Living Books Curriculum. I know that every time I post about our upcoming events I say that I think this one is the very best ever...but this one IS!  Grin

Just in case you are wondering, I just got this question by email and I think it is a super question:

Quote
Hi!  This past wkend I downloaded the podcasts for Making the Charlotte Mason Approach Easy 2007.  My husband and I ordered our curriculum for our homeschool from Living Books Curriculum for this coming year.  I received an email recently about a seminar on June 6 & 7 that the Carrolls and you are doing together about applying Charlotte Mason's ideas to homeschooling.   My question is are these seminars similar?  Is there any new material you are covering that you didn't cover in the 2007 series?  I'm interested in listening and gleaning info., but I don't want to spend extra money if unneeded.

Thank you and God Bless!!!

LuAnne

Here is my answer:

Hi!

Thanks for your email. This is a totally different workshop. This workshop is taught by the Carrolls. Because of many, many requests, we are trying to offer regular seminars focused completely on teaching with the Charlotte Mason Approach. Each has completely new material. This one is very exciting. Introducing Charlotte Mason! Ideas That Are SURE to Change Your Life AND Breathe Life into Your Homeschool!
By Cindy Rushton

Talking Charlotte Mason…Oh! I feel my heart start to flutter. I become almost breathless. I HAVE to restrain my bounce! I just get TOO excited! I have no words to express the difference that Charlotte Mason’s writings have had on my homeschool…well, really my WHOLE life!

I began to homeschool with such high-hopes…such conviction…such dreams for my little ones! Yet, I sadly must admit that, looking back, my philosophy of education had much to be desired.

My view of education and how children learned was a mixture of the best from my own public school education (which I DID love for the most part—well, except for not being able to talk all day with my friends…and those boring classes…and MATH!) and all of the fun that we always had a Vacation Bible School each year (since if we were going to HAVE to have school, it MUST be a godly homeschool!).

My preparation to homeschool (REALLY! Get ready for this! You are bound to feel great about your story!) consisted of having dinner with several homeschool families to pick their brains about homeschooling…going to our state homeschool convention (Which threw me for a complete loop! I had NO idea that they had more than one phonics book for homeschool families!)…and shopping for supplies (blackboard, white board, chalk, markers, paint, a US flag, and a Christian flag—Vacation Bible School remember!).

It is truly a wonderful thing that God can use ANYONE for His purposes! It is even more wonderful that God can take feeble efforts and redeem the mistakes, bless the great things, and end with pure and abundant blessings!

Beloved, I had NO idea of what God had in store for us—if I had, I would have been scared to death! Knowing my own heart, if I had had ANY clue what God was about to do in this awesome journey I would have probably ran to the backside of a desert as fast as my legs would carry me just like my favorite Bible character, Moses! (Probably one reason that there are no deserts in Mississippi or Alabama!)

Oh, homeschooling did not require that I know ALL about education. It only required that I have the presence of God with me and that I have a heart for my children. The rest has come through the years. Through sitting at the feet of Jesus and learning from those He has trusted along the way to teach me how to teach these precious children. God has taken the most unlikely vessel and taught me how to teach, but there is much more! God has given me my heart’s cry too!

You see, I wanted ALL that God could give me in my home, in my relationships, in my life! My deepest heart’s cry was for God to show me His plan and His design for our family so we could live wholeheartedly for Him. Yet, by default, I had no idea how to get there. Sure I had been brought up in a Christian home, but we did not homeschool and my parents’ marriage ended in divorce just a few years before I was married. I had NO idea how to get where God wanted to take me. I wanted to have a godly mentor to take me by the hand through this journey to teach me along the way. I needed to know how to teach these precious children. I found that I naturally messed up without meaning to. I needed to know how to encourage my children to learn and really LOVE learning. I needed just one person who would not be inconvenienced when I hit the tough spots and needed to know exactly what to do. I desperately needed a mentor to teach me step-by-step how to teach through the years. Oh, but most of all, I needed encouragement that I could do this! I needed a cheerleader standing on the sidelines letting me know that I was really the very best teacher for my children—the ONE that God had designed for this job from the foundation of the earth!

Well, finding the writings of Charlotte Mason, that were brought back from over 100 years ago, was a pivotal point in my homeschooling journey! God chose to use her much like He used Elisabeth in the life of Mary in Scripture. Although she did not live to host me in her home, her books captured her ideas in print for yet another generation of women who needed her wisdom as much as (if not more so) those young mothers in her time. God has used her words of instruction and affirmation to shed light on this homeschool path and to encourage me along the way in this great journey! She goes down in MY life story as one of God’s special mentors sent to teach me how to love my husband, my children, how to make my home—a godly home, and how to truly embrace my calling as a woman.

I am so honored and blessed to introduce you to Charlotte Mason and share with you some of the ideas that can change your life and breathe life into your homeschool! Ready? Well, here are some of my favorites that I think will make you love Charlotte Mason and her homeschool approach!

Teach the Teacher!

Just as in our day, Charlotte Mason found that there was a void. She found that the teachers needed to learn HOW to teach, WHAT to teach, HOW children learn, and WHAT real education looks like. Well, this was not just in her day or ours, this has been an eternal need. Charlotte Mason was yet another faithful vessel throughout time who dared to step up to the Titus Two call to mentor—and DID she! She led regular lectures and wrote extensively on how children learn, how to teach them with simple and easy techniques (actually the best techniques throughout all history!), how to develop an effective philosophy of education, how to balance education with managing a home and family, plus much more!

With great respect for the authority of the parents within the home, Charlotte Mason endeavored to point back to eternal methods of teaching children that would light a fire of passion in their hearts for learning all of their lives! Her ideas went beyond simply teaching for the sake of knowledge—a point that she endeavored to stress throughout all of her writing and teaching. Rather, she inspired the teacher to become a student and teach as THEY learn!

For me, this has meant that I have had to evaluate how I learn new information and use those same methods with my children. I learn mostly through real books, real life, and real people! I have to have LOTS of TIME to really spend digging into a topic. If I am going to remember information, I need to talk about it, copy neat facts (and place them in a place I can find them---aka, my notebooks!), and continue to dig deeper! The funny thing that I have found by learning new topics myself was that Charlotte Mason was correct as she stressed the importance of the teacher continuing to learn.

Just looking at how I learn, I can see that her suggestions are just what I DO without thinking! Miss Mason recommended accessing information through “real people” who love their topic and when they are not available, by accessing “real, living books” written by those that love their topic. She described books as “humanity in print.” Books bring the hearts of men and women that we may never see right into the palms of our hands! If that is not phenomenal enough, she also recommended using “real life” as another vital teaching tool. In fact, she recommended that teachers set up their day with short morning lessons, allowing the rest of the day for play, hobbies, family time, and other real life interests.

Another thing that I have learned by continuing to learn alongside of my children is how to be more patient with the process of learning. Years ago, Matthew and I attempted to learn Greek. At the end of the year, I remember the feeling of frustration that was panging in my heart! I was so frustrated because it all seemed so hard for me to learn. Thank goodness for Matthew being such a good sport and personal encourager. We were talking about the course and he looked up at me with his big, brown eyes and said, “Well, mom…don’t feel bad…it’s still GREEK TO ME too!” Yep, I giggled and lightened up my expectations of the lessons.

Actually, looking back, I think that the REAL lesson of that course was to show me HOW hard it is to learn new topics. Just studying through this course that seemed to teach nothing at all, I was impressed with much, much more grace and patience toward my children as they learn new things. I had taken so much for granted: how hard it is to learn new things, how much we need to have purpose for using our precious time to learn new things, how badly we need success along the way, and that some things may not even make sense but we can still learn life-principles from going through the experience! Truly Charlotte Mason was on to something life-changing as she required her teachers to keep learning alongside of the students.

Finally, one other reason that a teacher must keep learning is to avoid burnout and boredom so we can endure for the long-haul. Well, more than endure…so we can stay excited and passionate throughout the journey! As I travel to teach workshops, I am asked often how to have joy in the midst of homeschooling? How can we stay excited—especially when some of us are teaching for over 20 years in a row!?! How do I stay bubbly? I know that it would be impossible without God. However, one thing that I believe God gives us along the way in our journey is the fulfillment of learning new things! This is not just an idea from Charlotte Mason, it is a key to endurance and abundant life!

One example of this happened to me just last week. I learned something that just excites me to no end! We were studying about the armor of Roman Soldiers. In doing so, I learned that the reason that the Roman Soldiers wore red cloaks in battle was so that the enemy could not see them bleed if they were wounded! Now! That simply excites me right into the presence of God! Why? That simple historical fact gives me the practical information that I need as my spiritual strategy--TODAY. It helps me understand how to stand in the midst of adversity! Mama always said, “Never let your enemy see you sweat.” Same principle but, connecting information with the Word of God becomes more than a cliché or motto as we learn history! It becomes life-changing when we connect all of this with Philippians 4! We see how to live life even more abundantly! Then, the end result--well, my children really do enjoy me. They get the biggest kick out of my passion and excitement! It stirs up their passion and excitement--then, learning continues on for all of us. Oh, dear friend, see the importance of continuing to learn for life? See why I love that Charlotte Mason had a priority of teaching the teacher? Hooked yet? There is more!

Get to Know the Child!

“We must know something about the material we are to work upon if the education we offer is not to be scrappy and superficial. We must have some measure of a child’s requirements, not based upon his uses to society, nor upon the standard of the world he lives in, but upon his own capacity and needs.” Toward a Philosophy of Education on Page 65-66

Want to set the Charlotte Mason Approach apart from all others? Well, this is definitely not to slam any others, but of all of the approaches out there all others pale in comparison to the deep respect and love for children that is foundational in all aspects of the ideology of Charlotte Mason. This is one area that has transformed our homeschool AND my entire family life into much of what it is today. I think that this is one important “must” for any parent teaching with any approach!

Scripture commands us the following in Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go [and in keeping with his individual gift or bent], and when he is old he will not depart from it.” The word train means to disciple or dedicate our children. This gets so good, so stick with me. What are we to train them up for? We are to be discipling and dedicating them in the way they are to go, which is using their spiritual gifts and natural bents. Nowhere in the world can our children get a better preparation for their calling than with us as we homeschool them. If we will dedicate ourselves to discipling them along the way and training them to use their gifts and bents each and every day, then we can be sure that they will have the perfect preparation for their calling. If we can accept the vision that God has for our homes to be restored to His design for godly families, we can truly experience Homeschooling that is easy. All it takes is learning of Jesus, getting to know our children (their spiritual gifts and natural interests), teaching who we are, and becoming the family that God wants for us to be. Then, not only is Homeschooling easy, but the burden is truly light!

But, this is often a challenge! Why? I believe it is because getting to know our children requires TIME, dedication, commitment, and development of a close relationship! We must get to KNOW the child! We must get to KNOW WHAT WE ARE working with. This was the life pursuit of Charlotte Mason and it made all of the difference in the world with children down throughout time that were blessed with teachers that she mentored. Getting to know the child was the secret behind developing an educational program based on her effective philosophy that could still be tailored uniquely to each and every child and their individual gifts and bents! AMAZING!

Want to know how to get there? Well, to get there we must take time to really get to know our child! What are their strengths? What are their abilities? What is their bent? Where are their talents? What is God’s plan for your child’s life? This is where education begins for the child! Once we find these answers, we then know how to set before our children an education that is appealing, interesting, challenging, and uniquely designed just for them!

If you are uncertain about the answers to these questions and you have been struggling in your homeschool, this is EXACTLY where I would recommend that you begin with your foundation of study in education. Fewer things are more important than getting to know THE CHILD you are working with and WHERE they are going in life. Without taking time to really get know the child, much time will be wasted in vain efforts. Taking time to get to know each of your children and God’s plans for each of them will get you off on the right track! Take a look at what they Bible says about the call on the lives of God’s children. Take a look at their current personal interests. Take a look at WHO you are. You will get on the right track and I believe that you will find yourself as hooked on these great ideas as I am!

Get Back to the Good Old Paths!

If Charlotte Mason were here today, I think she would be absolutely embarrassed that I have referred to her “approach” so many times. In fact, I love her humility that transcends her writing through and through. This precious vessel never considered herself to have “arrived” at THE WAY to teach all children. In fact, she labored extensively in her writing to express that she did not have “an approach” to education and that she was still in the process of developing her own philosophy of education—even after 50 years of teaching and writing! Amazing! What she did acknowledge were the ideas and techniques that she found to be the very best of best of the best ideas!

Reading her books amuses me. Education in her day was no different than education in our day. Ideas were springing up constantly. Sadly, those same ideas used real children for their “experiments.” Today, education is the same. You and I know the results of these “experimental” ideas. Actually, we WERE the “experiments” for many ideas. The only way to safeguard our children from becoming rats in the educational laboratory is to do what Charlotte Mason did. This is best expressed in Jeremiah 6:16: “Thus saith the Lord: Stand by the roads and look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Old paths…yep! This is exactly what Charlotte Mason did in her day and exactly what I believe brought success in classrooms modeled from her ideas. She searched through the multitudes of ideas to uncover those tested, tried, and true methods. In her approach, we see ideas implemented that are eternal and were used from the creation of man and woman! She found the best ideas throughout history and used those ideas to develop an educational philosophy that has worked for over 100 years and I think it will continue to work for the rest of eternity because these ideas are those good old ways that bring rest and good educational fruit!

It may be Copywork and Notebooking, which we find as far back as Deuteronomy 17: 18-20. It may be narration, that method that has brought us the entire Bible and preserved History for us to learn today. It may be apprenticeships with those knowledgeable about areas of interest, as seen all throughout time. Oh, searching through Charlotte Mason’s writings, we are introduced to the old paths and given specific how-to’s to implement an education that is EASY! Search the old paths for fresh Homeschool ideas. They will work and you will be hooked on these great ideas for LIFE!

Implement REAL Education!

Real education goes way beyond the books! Charlotte Mason knew this and wrote extensively to give a picture on how to educate the child with a real, living education! She believed that one of the greatest responsibilities that we have as parents is to give our children an education that is wide, varied, extensive, full, and complete! Capturing this principle to its depths is absolutely life changing! Let’s look at practical ways that Miss Mason recommended that we bring real education into the home:

  • Limit lessons for the morning only! Miss Mason recommended daily lessons in the morning. This was a set, disciplined time for the students to practice their skills such as reading, copywork, narration, Bible study, languages, and math. Lessons were short, yet required excellence from the student. Also, lessons in the morning left time for leisure in the afternoon. Leisure for children means running, climbing, exploring, building, digging, dressing up, etc... Handicrafts, practicing musical instruments, chores, visiting lonely neighbors, observing and studying nature, and cooking can also be accomplished! Many families also have businesses and ministries for their children to be involved in. This does mean setting boundaries on “school” by not allowing school lessons to take over LIFE and by not assigning too much in a day that it becomes impossible to have early completion of lessons. The children get their work done promptly and correctly eliminating the need for homework and allowing them plenty of time to pursue real interests!

  • Keep lessons short and focused! Short lessons have several benefits. They encourage children to develop the good habits of attentiveness and excellence—in quality and neatness—while preventing the contrary habits of dawdling and sloppiness. Lessons are completed early in the day, usually before noon, leaving afternoons for leisure and real learning. This adds depth to the lifestyle of real learning. The children know exactly what is expected of them each day. They get their academic work done promptly and correctly so the rest of the day is free for natural learning so common in the average home centered on real learning. These short lessons also eliminate the need for homework while giving the children plenty of time for real life and relationships!!

  • Use Great Literature as the core of your curriculum! If there is one thing that comes to mind when the Charlotte Mason Approach is mentioned, I would imagine that books would be first on the list! However, what on earth do we mean by using books as curriculum? Do they REALLY cover the subjects? How do you choose? There are multitudes of wonderful books that can be used to teach children their school lessons. The problem presents itself as we find that we have limited time left with our children at home. Because our time is limited, we must be very selective about our choices. Charlotte Mason took this into consideration and recommended that we choose to read the best books available on each topic. Charlotte Mason felt that books written by individuals passionate about their topic were the “mind-food” that our children crave. She eliminated textbooks in favor of whole entire books, first-hand resources, classics, and biographies. Textbooks, busywork and activity branches must be pruned in order to have time to truly enjoy whole, living books! Give the best! Give the children a direct relationship with the best thinkers throughout time—our authors, artists, composers, inventors, pastors, political leaders—instead of just having a nodding acquaintance with them…you won’t be sorry!

  • Go back to Old Paths to find a different (and EASY!) approach to teaching Language Arts Skills to the children! I call this Language Arts…The EASY WAY! Miss Mason substituted Narration (retelling what is read), Dictation (writing down what is read to you) and Transcription (Copywork…copying great quotes and information directly from books) for tedious Language Workbooks or Grammar Lessons. She recommended keeping Copybooks (now called Notebooks) filled with sketches, quotes, notes, and journal entries. Because the lessons include seeing good models of writing, she found that the students do not need formal grammar lessons until older (around 4-8th grade…even at that age we have found informal lessons will suffice). They are able to learn the art of writing by modeling after great literature. This method is an easy, natural way to encourage young writers to become great writers! I join with Miss Mason, recommending these old paths so that we will not destroy their natural inclinations toward Language when we can choose an easy, natural and effective method proven throughout history!

  • Take time for the great and beautiful! Short lessons have another added benefit. In most schools, the children are kept so busy with tedious repetitive lessons that they never have time to be exposed to humanities; much less enough time to come to love Art, Music, Poetry and Fine Literature. Art, Music, Poetry, and Literature are vital for a well-balanced life and are a vital aspect of a living education. By presenting only skills, we starve the child and ourselves of beauty, emotion, and understanding. We need not do this. Instead, we can begin introducing and studying the humanities while our children are young and forming their personalities. They should be given the best…the excellent. Betty Carlson in The Gift of Music has said, “The more we acquaint ourselves with that which is truly great and beautiful, the more we will dislike and turn away from that which is shallow and ugly.” This captures what Charlotte Mason encouraged us to bring before the child—that which is great, beautiful, and truly excellent.

  • Inspire children with living ideas! The emphasis in our society has moved from encouraging people to think, reason, and discern—to now accept, feel, and conform. This was not so in the Charlotte Mason Education. Children were inspired to really think. They were encouraged to enjoy knowledge for its own sake rather than for grades or artificial recognition. Miss Mason felt this was best taught as we inspire them with real, living ideas. You can do this by simply putting them in direct contact with great minds via great literature, art, music, and history. Miss Mason encouraged parents to give their children at least one new idea each day. She did this by introducing them to a wide and varied curriculum including all forms of human (and divine!) expression.

  • No Grades! Yep! You read right! Grades can be so superficial, giving us the idea that learning is complete or, on the other end of the spectrum, that we are insufficient! Charlotte Mason knew that we are all inspired by admiration, faith, and love so she eliminated the use of artificial stimulants such as prizes, competition, and grades. Using her approach, we are inspired to get to KNOW the child, their capabilities, and what they are learning along the way. We no longer move on just for the sake of knowledge and keeping up with a list of to-do’s. We go the pace of the child, having 100% achievement before moving on!

  • Reach toward self-education...This education may seem overwhelming, but there is a key toward attaining this ideal education. The key is self-education. Self-education is what we are reaching toward: passing the torch for learning to our children! Charlotte Mason believed in equipping the child with skills needed to learn for life so they could continue learning all of their lifetime! In fact, she felt that education had not even begun until they began to learn and read on a wide variety of topics by themselves and with pleasure! Miss Mason felt that one of the most important things for children to learn is HOW TO LEARN. She strongly warned against allowing the child to develop a dependence upon the teacher to gather, pre-digest, and teach the material. Instead, she recommended that the teacher direct the child toward the author or composer or politician or thinker…then leave the child alone, allowing the child to respond to the information by various means (narration, discussion, demonstration, or creating a product to communicate their knowledge). She called this “masterly inactivity.” I have enjoyed this style of learning through the years and its rewards are immeasurable! My children have learned how to listen and look for answers directly from the source rather than being dependent upon ME or a manual to answer something for them! They have learned how to dig deeper…and even how to wait for answers. Perhaps, the greatest blessing has been watching them continue to learn at times that I could not help them due to illness or surgery. They knew how to learn and could keep right on going without me! Now, this approach often scares parents to death! At minimum, it ruffles feathers! What DO you do if your children are learning on their own? How do you record it? Instead of this pushing the parent out of the education of the child, Charlotte Mason meant for the parent to come alongside of the child as an encourager, helper, and best of all, fellow student in life! Of course, I do want to be sure to stress that this does not mean that the child does as the child pleases. Rather, Miss. Mason constantly pointed toward balancing out education by giving the children great books, learning with them, and letting them go for those delights so education could be full, complete, and excellent!

Get Back To God’s Design for the Godly Homeschool (and Family!)

Finally, I mention the best part last! I think if I had to choose my favorite part of all of Charlotte Mason’s ideas that she shared in her writings, it would have to be her constant encouragement to enjoy being a family. Her sweet writing affirms the beauty and purity of a mother’s influence upon the soul of the child. She constantly reminds us in the midst of the demands to watch our precious children learn…to slow down and go their pace…to learn alongside of them…to treasure every moment with them. I think that this is one of the greatest needs we have before us!

Sure, she lifts before us ideas that encourage us toward ideas that help us to equip our children with a full education, but she is faithful in her writings to slow us down to enjoy the journey of motherhood at the same time! We need this constant reminder! I think that it is just too easy to “miss it.” You know, to miss the most important things in life taking care of the mundane, urgent, unimportant STUFF!

Charlotte Mason steps up to the call as our Titus Two mentor, giving us a vision for an education (and family life!) that gets back to the way that God designed for it to be!

Her “approach” is not just another method of education, rather it is a call to get back to God’s design for the homeschool—the godly family! In this approach, school is wrapped around family life, not vice-versa! Learning is a lifestyle thing, not limited to a dull classroom or set of books or a list of requirements for each year made up by someone who has no clue who you or your child are, much less your needs. Play and family discussion become a form of “testing” the students all along the way. Lessons are learned from family discussions as each member shares what they are learning with everyone else! Moments are seized along the way to teach our children to look more closely at God’s creation…or into the heart of a painter by looking at his creation…or at the needs for others we meet in our journey day-to-day! Passion is infused from parent to child so the child develops a great love and passion for God, family, and others! The child is trained up, affirming his gifts, talents, and bents. It is education in its fullness. Education at its finest!

Introducing Help For You Too!

Yet, bit-by-bit, God has been completely faithful to teach me everything that I need RIGHT when I have needed it! He will do the same for you too!

My friend, need a glimpse into a godly homeschool? Need help in developing a biblical philosophy of education? Need easy, practical ideas for teaching that tough subject? A Quote by Charlotte Mason that Changed OUR Homeschool!

A Quote by Charlotte Mason that Changed OUR Homeschool!

I cannot believe that we are beginning another school year. As I look ahead, I also look back. One of the most PIVOTAL moments in our homeschool happened 13 years ago. I was just reading ANOTHER book. I was seeking for answers. But, I could have never had any idea of what God would do in our lives just through a neat quote!

Check out the following quote by Charlotte Mason:

“A child has not begun his education until he has acquired the habit of reading to himself, with interest and pleasure, books fully on a level with his intelligence.  I am speaking now of his lesson books, which are all to apt to be written in a style of insufferable twaddle, probably because they are written by persons who have never chanced to meet a child. ...Therefore, the selection of their first lesson-books is a matter of grave importance, because it rests with these to give children the idea that knowledge is supremely attractive and that reading is delightful.  Once the habit of reading his lesson books with delight is set up in a child, his education is—not completed, but ensured; he will go on for himself in spite of the

obstructions which school too commonly throws in his way.”

This one quote COMPLETELY changed our homeschool!

First, it changed the standard of the material that we use! We only use the very best. Our time with our children is SO LIMITED! I know this very well this year after graduating my oldest child. The years just FLEW by!  We only have just "SO" much time with these little treasures. There are millions of books. These two facts demand that we choose the very, very best for our children in the time that we have with them.

Secondly, it changed the type of author we look for when we look for books! We want to read books by those authors who have not lost their childhood. We want to read books by those authors who respect the mind of the child (and adult!) and give us mind-food! We want to read books that can be enjoyed by a toddler AND grandpa at the same time. We look for authors who have "chanced to meet a child!" We look for authors who KNOW their audience and respect their minds. It makes ALL of the difference in the world!

Finally, it changed our view of education.  Education is not about a list of things that we can check off and then deem our student "educated."   Rather, it is a lifestyle. A successful education is one in which the student is trained up with skills to learn and a love of learning FOR LIFE. The true success can be seen on Monday morning AFTER graduation!  What do they choose to do when they are on their own? Does the training instill a lifestyle for the rest of their lives? Does it just play "school" for the grade on the test...the next grade level...the test? Education begins when a child can (AND DOES) continue the habit of reading books for life.  Education is incomplete unless a child CHOOSES to learn for life. This one quote changed our view of education!

Just a quote!

It was just a quote by a woman long gone from this earth. Yet, truth is eternal. Truth can set us free to embrace ALL that God has in store for us!

We want MORE than just another method of education. We want for our children to be trained up with a lifestyle that is a LEGACY! Funny how a quote can inspire us toward God's awesome plan...and I was just reading that day!

Charlotte Mason's Advice for Choosing a Great Book!

Charlotte Mason's Advice for

Choosing a Great Book!

You will LOVE this one!

“A book may be long or short, old or new, easy or hard, written by a great man or a lesser man, and yet be the living book which finds its way to the mind of a young reader.  The expert is not the person to choose; the children themselves are the experts in this case.  A single page will elicit a verdict; but the unhappy thing is, this verdict is not betrayed; it is acted upon in the opening or closing the door of the mind.” Charlotte Mason, page 228 School Education
