Creative Homeschooling is...Thinking Out-of-the-Box!

First Standardized Test!

Read an almost identical story from, another homeschool mom! CLICK
This summer my eldest son was required to take his first standardized (government) test. This is the first state we've lived in that requires MANDATORY TESTING and I have to say I was a bit nervous about it. The testing is not only a measure of what my child knows but is also my first "report card" as his teacher in some respects as well. My homeschooling methods are somewhat similar to my homeliving methods, kind of creative, screwy  and out-of-the box. My idea of complete curriculum consist of things that I happen to find at the store, yard sales and ebay. With the exception of this coming school year (which  for the first time I bought a complete set), I have never spent more than $100 per year for both children combined! I have basically just focused on the three Rs and not worried much about the rest, especially since my two eldest boys read history and science books just for fun...I mean, why squelch that desire to learn by force feeding them those subjects with a daily dose of dry, tedious workbooks? So you want to know how he did with all that relaxed, unconventional and frugal home education? Overall, total battery for 6th grade, he scored in the 97%! With the exception of Vocabulary (scored in 7.5 grade) and Spelling (6.1 grade) he tested at high school level with most scores in the 12.9 ranking...that's 12th grade, 9th month. What's really surprising, is that he's  never worked in any  Science or Social Studies curriculum, both of which he scored in the 12th grade level! Other than to share a proud moment, my point to all of this is... RELAX! Don't get all stressed, worrying if your children are spending enough hours in their workbooks. Good education does not have to be like going to a job, putting in your time on a punch clock. Learning in an environment that is relaxed and fun, can take root deeper in your child's mind and in less time.

That is great!! I had the same experience with my daughter and am also very laid back about education. WTG! Thanks for sharing. It is encouraging to see other "laid back" people having children who score great on tests. It makes you know you are doing the right thing.

. Through message boards and blogs, I know that many hs moms worry about not keeping up or doing enough schooling. Unfortunately, we have the public schools to compare to, all those hours and ultimately precious childhood years spent sitting at a desk behind bars...oh, I mean windows. LOL I've heard that a child around the age of 12 could catch up to the 6th grade in a year! In other words, if they didn't have any schooling, including knowing how to read and write, by that age, their brains are able to comprehend all of elementary in a very short time.

Thanks for your comment on my blog, we are very grateful for the additional space (and to not have to look at that water heater all day.) Congratulations on the wonderful test scores! Gee, and I thought a child had to sit at a desk for seven hours a day in a class of 30 kids to accomplish such an outstanding feat! (said completely tongue in cheek!!!) Congratulations on seeing the fruits of your labor.
Blessings,
Sonya

I just have to say that the little dresser you painted is absolutely adorable. I wish I was creative! I have two little white dressers that look just like that one, and I would love to make them look like yours! Maybe someday I'll try. I love reading your blog. You have some WONDERFUL ideas. I hope you have a great day. I can't log in right now because I'm having my blog worked on, so that's why I'm commenting anonymously....talk to you later....

I had a very similar experience, with a very similar post... minus the excellent level of frugality... I've tried a lot of different things, and this last year things got so "far behind" that we really ending up unschooling more than anything... (just a lot of reading with a few documentaries thrown in...) and we had our best test scores yet!
I posted about it a few weeks back- if you want to read that post it's at-

Have good one (I know you will!),
and keep the great ideas coming,

That is great! Sounds like you're doing a wonderful job homeschooling them. You should be proud of them and yourself!

That must be really encouraging! It proves what I already believe as a former public school teacher... Just teach them to read and do math, encourage a LOVE of learning and they'll be take of. Funny, though, as a homeschooling mom, I still tend to worry about these things. Guess we all do that with our OWN kids, huh?

What an encouragement also to families who feel that they must spend tons of money on THE curriculum that is the be all and end all. That curriculum doesn't exist! =)

You go girl!
