How to NOT mix up Bs & Ds or 9s & Ps!

Remedy for mixing up Bs & Ds and 9s & Ps.

It is common for most children to mix up their letters when learning to write. Through repetitive writing, this backwards problem usually fades away naturally. However, this is not the case for everyone. My eldest son, who is slightly dyslexic, was still occasionally making perfect mirrored images of words even after writing for many years. One of the best way I have found to remedy this problem is to give them a mnemonic trick or tool to remember the correct way to write a letter or number.

To help remember which way to write b & d....just think of bed!
Have them make a fist with fingers extended on the table (see picture above). Tell them that they are making a bed with their hands. See the headboard and footboard of the bed?

To help remember the correct way to write 9s &Ps....just think of 9 Pigs!
After putting fingers int the "bed" position just flip them around so they are now facing towards you.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I love your writing and insights. It's so refreshing to hear someone declare the great "YES" to all our homeschooling doubts. I don't really have any anymore the way I did my first few years of schooling my kids. But I thought your prison analogy down a few posts in your blog was spot on. I've said the exact same thing myself. In fact my High school in No VA looked like a prison and felt like one to me! Your life sounds so full of energy and fun! Keep writing!

Thanks for visiting and leaving your thought-provoking comment on my blog. We haven't had the same experiences as you. We've rarely moved. Only twice with the family and the first move was live-changing - the six of us moved from a tiny two bedroom apartment to an older, but much larger home. The house changed my life. We were able to have a schoolroom for the first time. And, the kids didn't all have to sleep in one room.
I suppose the feelings associated with that move, gave me the idea that this move into a new home would produce the same kind of exhilaration. I haven't had that, only lots of things going wrong. Yet, at the same time, we know that God was behind this move.
Thanks for your perspective. It was an eye-opener for this less experienced gal.

Mar. 10, 2006 - LOVE this!

I came over here after you posted on my blog. I looked around and had to post...
I love this visual!!! I will definately be using it!

You won the camera! Think of it as the Lords mercy in the face of Ebay's "disenfranchisement" ;) Congratulations, by the way. The photo is adorable.

I too laugh at people when they ask if my children are "missing out". Ha! I think of what school was like for me and I definately beieve that is a poison well worth "missing"...and I was one of the 'popular' kids!

People still use hankies. I have a mess of them from my great aunt, and I adore them. I don't know that I would love someone else's old hankies, but hers are wonderful! I sometimes use them to have them sort of dangling out of my purse...caught in the closure part. It looks pretty. I have a clear lucite purse that I line with different hankies so no one can see the contents. I also actually use them to wipe my nose. I have a dogs nose...kind of always 'moist'. NOt really running, but just damp. Drives me nuts, so I use them to pat my nose dry...too much info? ;)

Have a ball with all your babies. Maybe a dog would be a wise move? (From one not-an-animal-person to another)!

Good to have met you...Love your TimesTales. Have refered many a users to it!

:)Leslie

Love your resumes...ours are not quite as colorful, but we do have a BLAST!

What a good idea! My ds mixes up the b and d, so usually just write with an uppercase letter. This will be a great help.
