Apr. 2, 2008 - Peeved or Persecuted?

(from my journal: Tuesday, August 14, 2007)

Peeved or Persecuted?

I got to thinkin' the other day about all the religious people who have come to accept a certain "thing" as "the "right thing", or even "the only thing".

You know, somehow they've gone through a step-by-step process to arrive at a conclusion and it becomes another commandment.

Thou Shalt....
or Thou Shalt Not....

Of course, it's not what Scripture says.
But they can tell you the whole logical process they arrived at to get to that conclusion.
It's flawed.
But they don't want to know.
They know what they know and that's just that.

And as soon as someone disagrees with them,
they pull out a "persecution card".
Like:
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed;
perplexed, but not in despair;
persecuted, but not abandoned;
struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9

It always seemed so.... I don't know, silly? maybe.
To call it persecution if someone simply disagrees with your interpretation is a bit much.

And it's sad that their next step is to gather all their buddies and gang up on the supposed offender.
Hateful things are said.
Shunning begins.
And so it goes.....
All the while claiming Christ and persecution.
Ironic.

Then I read about those who are tortured, or even murdered, for their faith and it makes all the petty stuff seem so much more petty.

"Why on earth would men and women leave the comfort of their homes and the safety of their homeland to put their lives at risk in order to aid strangers in a foreign country? For many it's hard to fathom. But for Christian missionaries throughout the ages, it can be summed up in two words: "Love" and "Obedience." Love for Christ and for their fellow man. Obedience to the Great Commission." (
Fools for Christ's Sake)

Which reminded me of this:

We ran a home school support group when no one wanted to step into the leadership position. We were hailed (uncomfortably for us) as saviors for the group. We simply wanted a healthy HS group for our son. Then the membership discovered that we were Catholic, and the vast majority of members stopped participating. Catholics, they believed, were not Christians, and they would not participate in a group led by non-Christians. They had their “logical process they arrived at to get to that conclusion.” The group floundered that year despite our best efforts at innovative programs and educational opportunities. It was miserable for everyone involved, particularly for the children who lost their activity time with other children. We stepped down after a year. The new leader the following year discovered that the group was horribly splintered, both by the Christian versus Christian in-fighting and the normal growing pains that every HS group experiences when older members move on and newer members are hard to come by. She decided that the lack of success that she experienced the following year meant that she was being martyred for Christ. She was being persecuted for her Christian beliefs. She had no clue what real persecution was.

Amen...and AMEN!!! Yep...sometimes the word CONVICTION is a word like that, too. Often not, but I've experienced several acquaintances that have 'convictions' the waffle depending on their mood.

Oh, and thanks for poking me in the link...very helpful.

Yes, I've always thought that we "suffer" a little by living in this comfy country. Don't get me wrong...I'm thankful to be here. Yet, in other areas of the world, where persecution is REAL, they grow more.

By the way, I like your new picture. Is it a mockingbird?

Thank you!
It annoys me to no end when people are all "I'm just being a martyr for Jesus" over trivial things. Sure, there are martyrs in this world....but you ain't gonna find many of them in America. Dealing with teasing at school is a long shot from being tortured, raped, and murdered. Hardly persecution. <_<

anyway....yay, glad you are enjoying PC! :)

We've been studying about persecution in our adult Sunday School class recently, and why Christians suffer - and it just makes me so upset when people in this part of the world talk about how they are "persecuted" or "suffering for Jesus" - give me a break. Getting a bad cold the day before your big solo is NOT persecution. Nor is being left off an invitation list because you go to church. or any of the other petty little things that we get bent about :eyeroll: Read Voices of the Martyrs - those dear brothers and sisters suffer, and we should be praying for them instead of pouting that someone at church doesn't see things our way.

Good post!!! And hopefully something I'll remember myself the next time I am out of someones favor and tempted to throw myself a pity party!

Blessings,
Kym

One of my former students has been participating in the World Race Mission Trip (http://cristiereiter.theworldrace.org/) She has seen true 'persecution". Thanks for speaking the truth.

Your insight can be boiled down to one word: Legalism. I grew up in a very legalistic environment; sadly, that environment was at a boarding school for missionary kids. Sad, but true. I'm still trying to crawl out of all of that so as not to perpetuate such an environment for my own children. By the grace of God...

So true....how sad we think our petty differences equal 'persecution'.
