Jun. 6, 2008 - Not Boxed In
Posted in Skool

One of the best things about homeschooling to me is the ability to take the time to notice things. We're able to slow down and really take a look. It may get us off track from our original plan of learning but it keeps us on track of the learning process itself. It keeps us able to enjoy learning....

Case in point is this gal:

When I went outside yesterday morning I saw her.

I have no idea where she came from or even where she was going.

But she was a welcome visitor!

Naturally, I had to run and get the camera. And naturally, I had to keep her around until the girls got up.

And even more naturally, since we homeschool, we had to learn more about this "box turtle"!

Since they're so common, you may see one. And if you do, here's a great site for imformation:
The Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina)

She is so cute! I had to giggle when you mentioned running for the camera. Was she threatening to speed off? Did you feed her? I wish she could have told her story :-)

A girl after my own heart! I have to take a picture of every critter in my yard (except bugs...ick). You'll be proud of my self-control though: yesterday I caught two toads in a "private moment" and let that photo-op slip by. Ü

Thanks for so faithfully stopping by my blog! I'll try to do better!

Never thought I'd say this about a turtle, but she's awfully cute! She looks like she has personality!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I always enjoy reading yours!

The Choo Choo Barn is a tourist destination in Lancaster County Pa. They have a large display, a miniature of Lancaster County with trains running through it. Even down to the little people who are in their yards working or standing by waving at trains ... it is cute. Been there a long time ago with my older girls but never had the younger there. We picked up the pass today so we will probably go next week sometime.

Neat! I will have to show this to my little brother. We found two box turtles last year--including a hatchling, which is supposedly very rare--so he did a project on them for the science fair.

The things you find mowing the lawn...

That's really neat to see in your backyard. We see rabbits, squirrels, and the nieghbors' cats.

I found one this morning while taking pictures of the house. I did the same thing but my pictures aren't as good as yours. Thanks for the web link. You just saved me some time.

She's beautiful! We haven't seen any wild turtles here in a long time. I kind of hope we do soon. I love turtles. I had a pair of Eastern Box Turtles a long time ago. They were fun to have around.

We found an African Sulcata wandering down the street one February mornig in St. Joseph, MO. She lived with us in our house for three weeks until we found a tortoise habitat outside of Austin, Texas, that we could send her to. She was an escaped pet, and really cool to have around.
