• Thursday, February 2, 2006 - Introducing Boot Camp: Part I

So it's "Boot Camp" in the Verlennich household... that's right... Mamma's fed up with the clutter and excess "stuff" that has invaded our home.  Attitudes have been at an all time high (including mine) and my home is slowly falling apart, right along with the house.

Home... house... what's the difference?  Well, to me, my house is what I live in.  It's the shelter that's provided to my family.  I refer to it when I talk about cleaning or the "state" of chaos in which it's in.   My home... now that's a matter of the heart and every day I strive to keep one for my children and have one for my husband to come to when he gets back from work.  As a wife and mother, it's my goal because I know that it pleases the Lord.

So... we've been cleaning, de-cluttering, and organizing like crazy.  But for "school" (aside from the older ones doing math and language arts), we've been working on our hearts.  WHAT?  No, school?!  That's right... the issues of the heart are much more important to me... and the Lord ("Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that's where life starts."  Prov. 4:23 (The Message)) and so this week, while we've been getting our house in order, something even more important has been happening within our shelter... we're fighting the "good fight" to restore the hearts of those residing in it.  It's hasn't been easy, and it may take longer than a week, but this is what I've been called to do as a mother... before being a homeschooler... and while my children do need to know how to read and write... they will one day stand before the Lord, and the heart they bring, is the one I am tending to today.
A Mother's Prayer...

In Him,
Amy

Follow along as we continue reviving the heartbeat in our home through BOOT CAMP!

we are working on heart issues here, too. That has basically been on my heart this whole school year. I read something in the Timberdoodle catalog last fall that really spoke to me. It was something like, "If your children's hearts are not right, then you need to put aside the formal schooling and concentrate on their hearts." Of course, it was put much more eloquently than that, but it helped me see that their little hearts are much more important than their academic achievement. Thanks for this post, Amy -

"A house is where you hang your hat, a home is where you hang your heart"

Sometimes I feel like if my HOUSE isn't in order, neither is my HOME. I see glimpses of home through the cluttered spaces, but I'd like to see the whole pictures!

Today is my home blessing. Decluttering, vacuuming, moving furniture, dusting, mopping, etc.!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I got over my nausea about two weeks ago in time to get a cold, but that's gone too! I feel fine, just tired and uncomfortable sometimes. How are you feeling now?

Enjoy your decluttering!

I like the idea of boot camp! No- I am stuck taking the later course. There is nothing they can do. The lady felt bad- it was their mistake. But I will have time to play around with what I learned and maybe get that down pat before moving on. Maybe is has to do with needing to be off the computer more. I need to find a balance.

So YOU took my motivation, eh? :o) (see my blog) Granted there's not too much organization to be done since we just moved less than 2 months ago but it's the weekly stuff that's getting me....uhg! Go, Fight, Win - against the "stuff"!

I applaud your efforts. If your home isn't in order it's impossible for it to be a place to really learn. Keep up the good work! (Oh I found your blog through FaithfulGrace)

We do "basic training" on a regular basis. Sometimes it is more for me than it is for them. I need to be organized or I feel overwhelmed and unproductive. However, the biggest part of basic training is always the heart attitudes. We can forgo a whole day of school to deal with attitude, servanthood, kindness, a soft answer, etc. Academics have very little to do with why I homeschool. I guess that is why I have only had one article on actual homeschooling and the rest is on living life. The reason I began in the first place is because I was noticing ungodly attitudes and actions in my children and since God has called us to train our children at all times(Deut. 6:5-6) I realized that I wasn't doing my job when I was merely fitting it in on the weekends. God loves order and it all begins in the heart. We set the temperature of our homes, I guess that is why I say basic training is more for me than them sometimes. God will bless our efforts and faithfulness as we continue to fight the good fight.

Amy, I have to say we're having the same problem here. With 1g8 and 2 & 3 g3.5, life is crazy and all they do is FIGHT and ARGUE lately. No amt of "be nice" or "stop fighting" is working. Dh and I were just talking this morning about how HSing is all well and good but we'd rather have their HEARTS right. I'm off to read more about your bootcamp - I think that's what we need as well!

Ooooooo. Attitudes have been an issue in this house and home these days. And the Lord has been impressing it on my heart more and more (beating me over the head perhaps?) that attitude has to start with me! Good attitude, that is. The unfortunate truth is all attitude does start with me! And when that attitude is not so good...... watch out!

This post just reinforced what I've been mulling over lately. Thanks for this, Amy, and for giving me a little impetus to start working! You can read more of what I wrote/thought on my blog. :)

I'M "JUST" A MOM...
and a woman seeking the Lord's Will (daily), a wife (striving to keep the romance alive), a "Smamma" (Step- mother) of one and a homeschooling mom of seven (I was never going to have children), who starts every day over (after messing SOME thing up the day before), knowing God's grace is overflowing (just like my laundry), and so thankful He's blessed me more than I'll ever deserve.
