Jun. 19, 2007 - Harvard and Its Idea
LarkNews.com
A good source for Christian news.
VOLUME 1 | ISSUE 13 Monday, June 18, 2007
Harvard forcing homeschoolers to 'Fit In'
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Jim and Katrina Randalefner of Omaha, Neb., were
shocked when, after driving all the way to Massachusetts to enroll
their oldest son at Harvard University, they discovered he'd been
assigned to an all-homeschooler dormitory, and forced to go through a
program called "Fitting In," to help him socialize.
"It felt like segregation,
posted a 'whites only' sign."
But Harvard insists they're helping to mainstream students who
otherwise find it difficult to blend in with the rest of the student
body.
"The first year is tough for homeschoolers because many come from
such limited social environments,
freshman counseling. "We wanted to help them get their footing in a
university setting."
Child studies professor Darna Craig agrees, saying the
homeschoolers she's taught are "brilliant, but not the smoothest
social animals. They don't know how to joke around or make light
conversation,
Fitting In's semester-long schedule includes trips to public
places where homeschoolers mingle with people from different socio-
economic backgrounds; parties where they learn to have meaningless
conversations to forge social bonds; tests on popular slang phrases
and lessons on how to "hang out" without outsmarting everyone else in
the room.
The most daring component pushes homeschoolers to experiment
sexually.
"It's pretty well known that Harvard, like most secular colleges,
wants kids to have intercourse by sophomore year, to get a feel of
what life's about," says Kushner. "Homeschoolers are much slower to
catch on to what their sub-culture deems sinful activity, and that
puts them at a social disadvantage. To put it bluntly, they need to
loosen up and hop in the sack."
But homeschoolers are offended by the assumption that they're
socially stunted.
"This 'Fitting In' stuff is utterly risible," said Todd
Randalefner, 17, from Nebraska, looking up from the third volume of
The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. "I consort with many types of
people — Irish, Welsh, British, and many more. Just because I didn't
have daily nutrition breaks or physical education in the traditional
public school setting doesn't mean I need to be handled like some
sort of fledgling titmouse. A titmouse is a small bird native to
North America, three inches in length and with a diet of insects and
berries. Some species are endangered where urban construction has
encroached on habitats."
Inflaming the debate further, Harvard dean James Muesten recently
told a small Vermont newspaper, "Homeschooled children tend to come
from white, evangelical families, and frankly, those people — I don't
want to call them rubes — have a lot to learn about broader culture."
He later retracted the comments, saying they were made "in the spirit
of the interview" which was free-wheeling and "not entirely serious."
He said he thought the Vermont newspaper was satirical and he had
tried to "make a joke that turned out not to be funny." He
apologized, but affirmed that the homeschool dorm was a good idea
that would prove itself over the years.
"Fitting In is a great program," he said. "If you're homeschooled
and you're coming to Harvard, this is the way it is."
Universities have long offered specialized dorms for various
groups, from African-American students to bio-engineer majors. But
this is the first time a certain class of student has been singled
out by educational background and virtually forced into the same
dorm. Students are only allowed to opt out if they strenuously
object, Harvard says.
Todd Randalefner says he'll grit his teeth and stay in the dorms
for one year. "Then I intend to opt out, posthaste, and get an
apartment," he says. "I'd rather study during waking hours, and I
can't tolerate too much interaction with people."
Isn't that just ridiculous and sad. Post your comments on it.

May. 9, 2007 - Just an Update
Just thought I might give you an update on everything. Lets see . . . well, our chicks have started roosting and "nesting". Give it another couple of weeks and we'll have fresh eggs! Yay! I like eggs, but they must be scrambled or an omelet. But, even though I like them, I'm more of a cereal person. How 'bout you? Well . . . let's see, what else? Oh, my aunt is going to surgery this coming Monday at 11 AM, so keep her in your prayers. Another thing to be praying for is for me, my story is on hold right now because of this. I know what I want to happen, but I don't know how to get there in the story. I mean . . . I can't think of the storyline. What's up with that? I dunno. I should be updating with it soon.
Another thing is that I might go see SpiderMan3 this weekend. Yay! I've heard mixed reviews about it. What did you guys think about it?
Well, g2g. Mum's on my case and I must start school. Oh, and I got TAB tonight at the library. Yay! Pizza!

May. 6, 2007 - Update on Story
Well, I'm not going to give you any more of the storyline for two reasons :
1. ) I don't want to spoil it.
and
2. ) I haven't even written it yet.
But, like the title says, I'm going to give you an update. This time its the characters. Yay! Are you pumped? Okay, here they are:
Alesilan : New King of Khartom Kingdom
Aisotta : Healer and Teacher to Alesilan
Doreg : Alesilan's trainer in combat
Eldred : Alesilan's teacher in Magic
Another thing I'm going to give you is the 4 different career classes that one can choose when one becomes old enough :
The Healers were those who went about the city and countryside, healing the different ailments. They had a rudimentary knowledge of magic, but it was nothing that could compare to that of wizards. Alesilan’s brother Jorys was studying to be a healer.
The Soldiers class was for those who dreamed of conquering far-off lands or of defending the coasts of the realm. These people were taught to use all sorts of weapons: bow and arrows, swords, shields, axes, spears, machete, and other such tools. If Alesilan hadn’t wanted to be a wizard, he would have chosen the Soldiers.
The Artiscoratic class was the class of politics. This was the one who handled the trade prices, the treaties, and all other foreign affairs. This was the class that Alesilan least liked.
The Wizard class was one only for the smartest students and the ones with the highest inner qualities. Too many good wizards had been lost to darkness over the years to let anyone with a faint heart in.

Apr. 21, 2007 - The Khartom Blades
Prologue
Khartom, the Kingdom of the World, was just ahead. The enemies eyed the lands and were filled with desire and a longing need. They had waited for centuries to be here, but now . . . the time had come to put the kingdom in its rightful place.
“Stop here,” commanded the captain, “We’ll go the rest of the way at night. We don’t want to underestimate these people.”
The crew followed the command in an orderly fashion, causing the ship to stop and then they threw their anchor to stop them from drifting. As they dropped the anchor and heard it clang on the bottom of the sea, there was a fantastic roar from beneath the waves.
The men, not knowing the source of the sound, began to panic. They ran about the ships and started to find something to defend themselves with, hoping that they were going to see another sunrise.
There was another roar. This sent waves of crippling fear through the soldiers. As some stood there, immobile from the fear, they heard the sound of broken water. Following the sound of something coming up was the image of a monster unlike any other the crew had seen before. It was a Hasta! The long, serpent-like monster towered almost fifty feet above the deck of the ship.
As the men followed the long, scaled body up its neck, they came to the mouth. What they saw there were a bunch of sharp teeth as big as a man’s hand all jumbled around in the mouth, but the thing that protruded the most were two long fangs in the front, almost as long as a man.
The Hasta let out a deafening roar that was twice as loud as it was under the water. The decks of the ships were in complete chaos. Some of the men had grabbed their bow and arrows and started to shoot at the Hasta, but to no avail.
“Tural!” called the men, wanting their ultimate protection to come to them.
A young man came out of the cabin. His tall body alone gave the men more confidence. He stood there for a minute, oblivious to the mayhem around him. After some moments, he looked at the monster towering above the deck.
The young man took his hands and held them up and yelled, “Fulmen!”
Bolts of lightning shot from his hands and flew towards the beast. When the tendrils of energy hit the Hasta, they traveled through its body down to the water. After a few minutes, Tural said, “Termin.”
All energy coursing through the creature ended and what followed was a foul stench of burnt flesh. The men on the deck cheered for their wizard, but Tural didn’t join in the celebration. There were more pressing matters to attend to. He went back into his cabin and left the men to enjoy themselves in their “victory.”
After the celebration was over, it was time to get back to business. The men, now over their previous fears, began to prepare for the upcoming battle. They sharpened the swords, practiced the different maneuvers, and did whatever else was necessary to prepare for the impending battle.
****-----****
Darkness had fallen over the land and the city of
Tural was out on the deck with the soldiers and he just stared ahead at the city, his piercing blue eyes missing nothing. Khartom had shown no sign of noticing the presence of the fleet, but that was the problem. Surely they would have heard the Hasta and the clamoring of ships.
The ships, now reaching their destination, began to lower the transport boats that would take the men from the sea to the land. The first and second waves, which included Tural, made it to the beach fine. It was when the third wave started to come that Khartom began to open up.
“Theryo!” exclaimed the young wizard, creating a shield around the group on the beach.
As they stood within the shield, the men watched as the enemy ships began moving in on their own fleet. The Chance, the command ship of the Ironians, had been surrounded on all sides and been destroyed.
Some more of the men had made it to the shore, but as soon as they got out of their boats, they were shot down by the archers up on the cliff. Any of the arrows that hit the shield went up into flames.
“Shoot at them!” exclaimed Tural, “You’re arrows will penetrate the shield.”
Obeying their leader, the men began to fire their arrows up at the archers above them. As the enemies were hit, they fell over the cliff face and came down on top of the shield and met the same fate as the arrows that hit. Soon, many of the archers up top had been shot down or retreated.
When he thought they were safe, Tural let down the shield surrounding him and his men. On the sea, the battle didn’t fare well for either side. Both sides had lost over half of their fleet and they had both lost their command ships. Now that the archers were gone, other soldiers from the Ironian fleet began to join their comrades on the beach.
Soon, the force on the beach contained around seven hundred men, all armed to the teeth. They began their way up the hill to assault the city itself. As they were making their way up the hill, beasts began to run down the hill from the opposing direction toward the Ironian men.
“Attack!” shouted Tural, “Spare none!”
The men ran forward and began to fight the enemy. Within the ranks of the enemy there were all sorts of beasts: powerful ogres, elves, and wargs.
Tural kept a small detachment of men near him for protection, but he still helped out in the battle. He constantly shouted spells of all sorts to take out the enemies. He used the pryglob spell, causing balls of fire to erupt from where he designated.
The battle continued, beginning to tip in the Ironian’s favor. There was constant hacking of swords and firing of bows. Men and beast alike continuously fell over, dead or injured. As the ranks of the enemy began to lessen more, the men fought on with a determination like no other. When the enemy had been destroyed, the men continued on.
As the attacking Ironians went on, they met little or no resistance. Finally, they reached their target. The palace stood ahead of them in all of its grandeur and majesty. The moat, which would pose no difficulty to the attackers, was wide and contained oil-soaked wood. The battlements that surrounded the palace were high and there were already men there preparing to repel the invaders.
Both sides did nothing. One was waiting for the other to make the first move. When neither began, the only sound was the cry of wounded and of the battle down below. Tural murmured something that few heard. Moments later, rain started to fall. It came down slowly at first but it was soon coming down hard.
Both sides were now closer to the edge than ever before. Each side was itching for the battle to begin, each for his own reason.
“Levau!” exclaimed Tural, pointing his hands toward the moat.
At his command, logs and sticks from the moat came up and joined together, making a bridge.
“Fire!” a voice shouted from on the battlements.
Someone fired a fire arrow towards the oil-soaked moat, but it didn’t catch because of the rain! As the Ironians made their way across the make-shift bridge over the moat, archers fired down from the battlements, falling many men, but it didn’t stop the seemingly endless torrent of hundreds of men. As Tural made his way over the bridge, with his own personal shield up, arrows were constantly consumed by fire as they hit the shield.
Tural was across the moat when another blur of energy came from the top of the battlements. The energy bolt hit Tural’s shield and destroyed it, leaving him defenseless! Tural immediately rolled to one side, grabbing a sword from a dead soldier. When he had gotten up, he looked around for the source of the attack. He found it.
An older, much wiser, wizard was on top of the battlements, staring hard at the young Tural.
“Plagam infligere!” shouted both wizards.
Shots of red erupted from the two wizards’ hands and flew towards the target. Before either wizard could react, they were hit with the red force. As they were hit, the two wizards fell over dead.
As the two wizards lay were they died, a ghostly presence rose up from their bodies. The ethereal entities hung there for a few moments and then they started to glide towards each other. As they came closer together, the stronger the pull of them coming together became. When they were finally close enough, they were pulled into each other. Flames erupted from the two joining “ghosts”. People started to back away, but still stayed to watch the awesome spectacle. After a few moments, there was no more fire, just smoke. As the smoke rose, lying there on the ground were two blades. One of the swords had a blade with a green hue to it, with a circle-shaped guard. The other sword has a blade of a red color, with a wave-shaped guard.
When the two sides saw these blades, they took it as a sign from the gods to lay down their arms and remember this day as the first day of peace, to remember this day as the day of the Khartom Blades.
What do you think. This is the first part of a book that I am planning to write.

Apr. 19, 2007 - SOOOO SLEEPY!
OMG! I am soooo tired. Last night, I went over to a friends house at about 2:00. It was her birthday, but I mainly went for Kody because there were going to be 4 other girls there! Well . . . . it turned out a bit different than I excpected. Let's see. The party didn't start till six, so I was a bit early. So, I helped Dee make the hamburgers. I love doing that. Neway . . .
Ceslie (the most country girl you will ever meet) got over there at about 5. So, we ate and then later came all the other girls. GAH! Scary! Then they put on music and started dancing. It all went down-hill from there. Or . . . up-hill. Whatever! They tried to get me to dance, but I said, "Nope, I don't dance". Ceslie and Amanda (b.day girl) kept pulling me up to dance with them. They dance up all on me and stuff to try to . . . seduce is a good word . . .me to dance with them. Sadly, I turned them down. After a while, they kept dancing to music like Buttons, Walk It Out, I Wanna Love You, One Wish, Du Dip (is that what its called?), Laffy Taffy, and other songs of that sort. It was blasting!! Finally, Amanda got me up and taught me the Electric Slide. That was easy. Then came the part where I had to improvise!
For anyone who's ever known me, I am not one to improvise. lol! I had to let the "music flow through me". How corny is that? Well, I danced and they danced. We danced. I got Amanda and Kody got Ceslie. The only reason I got Amanda was because Amanda and Kody are siblings and if they danced the way we did . . . . that would've been very, very wrong. Then we had to slow dance. GAH! I hate slow-dancing. I, once again, got Amanda. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with Amanda, it's just . . . wierd. We're best, best friends. It was just wierd, not necessarily unenjoyable. lol! Luckily here dad wasn't down there! Her mom was, but she's cool. Anyway we partied and danced forever! I got home, and I go to watch my nightly movie. NOPE! Not last night, I was soooo tired. I laid in bed and was out like a light.

Mar. 13, 2007 - Celtic Woman and Other Stuff
Well, I went to my library the other day and I saw this DVD called Celtic Woman. It is a singing group. I didn't think I would like it. I wasn't even planning to watch it. But, God had different plans for me. I was upstairs playing on the computer and I heard the music being played downstairs. And I must say that . . . I have never heard such awesome music in my life. I LOVE IT! Its weird being a guy and liking this music, but it has a slight Irish/Scottish tone to it and I'm a big sucker for those. Here are some vids of my favorites:
Orinoco Flow
You Raise Me Up : This is a Christian song. I'm sorry the sound and the video aren't matched. The video is a bit fast, but the main thing is to hear the music. Here are some more:
Walking In the Air : This is my favorite

Mar. 2, 2007 - Me Again
Kudos to all who posted some comments for the pic. Yes, I know that he is such a cutie. I love him to death (except when hes a bad dog)! lol! There are times when he can drive you up the wall. He is a big freak when it comes to toys. He loves tissue boxes, toilet paper rolls, boxes, etc. Things like that he loves to shread. There's hardly a day that goes by when he doesn't get one of those things. He is also a big fan of stuffed animals. (What dog isn't?) At least once a day, he'll get one of my sister's stuffed animals and run around the house with it. Despite being a big dog, he is such a wuss. He hates mirrors. When I say hate, he really hates it. Maybe its his reflection that freaks him. Who knows!
Anyway, I thought I'd post what I did today in school just to get it off the chest and say "TGIF!". Well, because of the extra credit class that I chose to do, I have about an extra hour of school every day. This moring I got off to a late start, so I didn't get done until sometime around 1:30. For classes, I can go in any order, but I usually just do this order: Algebra 2, Spanish, Bible Doctrines, Consumer Math, English, Biology, and then World History. World History is last eveyday, even if I change all of the others around because I always say, "Save the best for last!" World History is my favorite subject ever. I lean more towards the Ancient history of the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. As we get further into modern history, I notice that I don't cling to the class as much as I used to. Is it wrong that I do that? Or, maybe I should just be a bit more broad in my approach to world history. Being so close to the end of the school year (57 days), I look forward to the end of the day more and more.
Being such a math freak, I love to start my day off with a bit of Algebra action. Another reason why I start with this class is that it definately gets my mind moving and thinking. I mean with equations that take up a whole page, that is sure to be your source of caffiene in the morning. Speaking of which, I don't really like caffiene. Well, I take that back. I love cappachinos. Don't laugh at my spelling. I don't really know how to spell that even though it's probably easy. English has never really been my strongest subject. My English class is divided up into three things: Grammer and Composition, World Literature, and Vocabulary and Spelling. The thing that pushes me away from liking it, I think, is that there are so many rules and darn variables to figuring out how to break down a sentence. That is why I prefer math. Math is absolute. There are no exceptions to rules unlike English. There is always an exception and sometimes an exception to the exception. Take the word Reverand and Honorable. If you use Reverand in a sentence you may abbreviate it if the full name is there. But, even if the full name is there and the word the precedes it, you must spell it out. Just typing it is difficult.
Now Spanish is a totally different matter. I love Spanish. It is sooooo easy. I mean, there is usually only one sound per letter and there aren't even 26 letters there! My whole family finds most of it confusing, but I find it to be a breeze. The main thing that one must get down if they are to take Spanish is that everything must agree. Being a Romantic language (i.e. Latin and German), all words have a gender and number value. Take the word libro (book) for example. This word is a mascualine noun, where as pluma (pen) is not. To make it even simpler: if the word ends in o, then it is a mascualine word. If the word ends in a, it is a feminine word. Of course, there are exceptions, but nothing major. Occupations such as dentista, explora, mecanica, etc. are all mascualing words.
Well, I've probably worn ya'll out from reading and I didn't intend to make this a school session. Sorry about that
.
G2G! Leave comments and maybe I'll post some pics.

Feb. 25, 2007 - Hola, Amigos!
Hello everyone! I'm sorry I haven't updated in forever. I know, that's a bad boy. *slaps self* Well, I thought about this the other day and then I said "I'm gonna update it"
Lets see, right now I am listening to some music. In particular, I am listening to Don't Matter by Akon. I just love Akon, don't you? I love his songs Smack That, Bonanza, and I Wanna Love You.
So what have my friends been up too? I think I'm gonna give you a picture to enjoy.
This is my cute puppy, Bonkers. How he got the name Bonkers is still unknown. When we got him from the pound, we came home and the first thing he did was poop on the carpet. GAH! But, his pads were still soft, and we have a whole lot of wood floor. So one time he was running and slid into the door. That's how it became Bonkers. Isn't he cute?
Heres a picture of me:
Well, I gotta go. Srry no picture, but I gotta upload them from my Digital Camera and its lightning out side!!! OH NO!!! Leave some comments!!!

Oct. 17, 2006 - Updatie!!
Hello everyone! I decided to give ya'll an update. (Ain't I kind? lol! j/k!) Well, bad news . . . . tomorrow I have a dentist appointment. You know how much I hate dentists? Almost as much as I hate doctors and all medicare practicers. I hate it, I really do. Do you share my hatred? I hope so!
Anyway, missed a day of school last week cause I was sick, and I mean sick. I'm not going to go into details, but it was horrible. So, I'm a day behind but thats okie-dokie. I can make it up easily. Lets see, oh, today I have a Spanish test.
Yo comprendo? lol!
So far, I've learned like 400 words from vocabulary alone. Some of my favorites are periodico (newspaper), borrador (chalk eraser), and perdon (excuse me). I just think they sound cool.
Well, I'll update and give you all my test scores later, kk?
Adios, amigos!

Sep. 30, 2006 - Update
Well, I went to Indiana last weekend for my Grandma's 65th. She had a kareoke (sp?) party and sadly, it was all country music. No offense to you country music lovers, but that is definately not my "cup of tea". I personally enjoy bands such as Black Eyed Peas (the best), Nickleback, Smash Mouth, Staind, 3 Doors Down, etc. . . Things like that. I went up and danced in front of everybody with the song "Shove It" and "Chicken Dance". Well, the "Shove It" song (not very appropriate) was just me shoving up my arm, signifing . . . . . and the Chicken Dance is, of course, a classic.
So, thats what I did this week except the dreaded school . . . . I can't stand doing it! Gah!!!!! Sometimes I love it, sometimes I don't. I was sick this week, so I was kinda like uhhhhh . . .lol!
Well thats it.
cya!!

Hey there to everyone that reads this! Srry I haven't updated in awhile . . . ok, maybe a long, long time. I've been busy or lazy. lol! Thats something isn't it. Well, I've started school officialy. I've been going for a whole 2 weeks and I kinda like it. I know, not the dramatic reason for not being on that you had hoped for. Srry! Again! lol!
Well, heres a list of my classes:
Spanish 10/Mrs. McLamb: I really like this class. Its real easy and then its real hard. By the end of the first week of Spanish, I had learned 50+ Spanish words. I had a vocab. quiz every day. It was hard. Now its now so hard. I really like this class. The teacher is real nice and helpful (even if I can't talk to her).
English 10/Mrs. Thompson: I like Mrs. Thompson, don't get me wrong, but English is not my thing. I'm good at writing, except when its forced out of me. I like to write. In fact, I might be coming out with a book in a month or two, but when its demanded, I just blank. I'm also not very good with the grammar. There's always exceptions to rules and then exceptions to that. Example: Do not abbreviate Honorable or Reverend unless its with the full name. Exception: If preceded by the word the, spell out the words, even with full name.
Algebra 2/Mr. Ashworth: I like this class a lot. I'm really good at math. I used to hate it, but now I just love it. I think I changed my mind cause of the English thing. There are so many (too many) exceptions in English, but in math, there are none. Everything is a constant. 2 + 2 will always equal 4. An obtuse angle will always be greater than 90 degrees. See?
Consumer Math/Mr. Dickson: Yes, I know. 2 Math Classes!!! Am I crazy? No, not really. This is just to get me prepared for Economics in 12th grade. Can't wait for that either.
World History/Mr. Duby: My favorite subject. I've always been one for history. I specifically like Ancient History, like the Romans, Egyptians, Norse, Greek, etc. But modern is okay. If I wanted to get even more specific, I like the ancient religions. I just like learning about them. This is one of my favorites!
Biology/Miss Stancel: Biology is biology. Nothing to say about it except I have a MAJOR (and I mean MAJOR) science project this year. It counts as 30% of my average grade. Yikes!

Bible Doctrines/Pastor Schetler: Well, this class is interesting. That's it.
Well, those are my classes so comment on. I'll be updating more later!! kk?
