Homeschooling Only One

Monday, March 24, 2008 - Well, I'm coming clean...

With my son being so sick with bronchitis last fall, he's gotten behind in his schoolwork. This is his senior year. Thirteen years of homeschooling about to come to an end....

Well, not quite as soon an end as I was planning. I've just reconfigured his schedule and his last day will no longer by August 1st, but November 14th. I've updated my ticker to reflect that. We've been talking of him taking a "gap year" so that will be a bit abbreviated, but I don't think that will be a problem. He will most likely start college the Fall of '09.

(Unless he suddenly gets a revelation and knows what he wants to study for a vocation. If that becomes the case, he can start college when he wants to. But since he has no clue, I think giving him some time doing volunteerism will help him mature and give him some time away from the books to perhaps hear some direction from on High. We pray anyhow.)

So the clock continues ticking... just a bit longer than first expected....

Not a terrible thing, since we've NEVER prescribed to the idea of "stay up with who" or "catch up with who".

I think it's great that you can be so flexible. It's nice to have a plan, but it's even nicer to be able to change it when you need to. And who says by such and such an age you HAVE to be doing this or that?

I was checking things out thru the HSB newsletter email and happened to come across your stuff. I was encouraged by your comment of never prescribing to the "stay up with who" or "catch up with who". As a mom to an only child (a precious 12 year old daughter in her (our!) second year of homeschooling) I sometimes worry that we aren't doing enough or that what we are doing for school isn't adequate for where she "should be at"...and yet I know in my heart of hearts that God is in control and whatever needs to be covered in her schooling will get covered at some point and in His timing. I figure that whatever God has planned for her life will be worked out in her despite any shortcomings in our schooling! I look forward to reading more of your posts...and plan to add you to my friends list as soon as I post this comment :-) Have a wonderful day!
