I got my new serger out of the box, went to a class to learn how to use, and set it up in my sewing room. My first project is going to be some maternity clothes for MEND Pregnancy Center (a Christian, abortion alternative program). They need some maternity clothes for larger size women.

I went to the pattern store and was I surprised at (1) the price of patterns!, and (2) the lack of maternity patterns. So I am attempting to design my own from two I could find that I didn't particularly like. If anyone out there knows where to find up-to-date maternity patterns, let me know.

What a wonderful ministry! A tip on pattern prices: If you get on the mailing list for Joann or Hancock fabrics, you will get sale flyers in the mail that will let you know when there are sales on patterns. Generally, at least once per month (and with the holidays coming, there will be constant sales) you can get patterns for 1.99 each and occassionally .99 each. Hancock just ran a sale where all McCalls patterns were .99 and I bought 5.

Also, patterns at WalMart are generally always half price but that can still be a chunk of change. Next time I see a great sale, I will try to remember to let you know.

That is so sweet that you are making clothes for this organization. I'm sure the new Moms-to-be will appreciate your efforts! I envy your patience to sew. I enjoy crocheting and trying to knit, but sewing isn't my gift, unless it's hand sewing! Thank you for having a heart for others.
