Many of the homeschooling moms I know
have trouble with science. I think it's a girl thing - in general,
girls don't like science and math as much as reading and history.
Consequently, much of the emphasis in homeschooling seems to be on
history and reading. However, you must remember that you may be raising the next Isaac Newton (see blog: http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/EmptyNestMom/485/ ) or Thomas Edison; therefore, it's important to expose your children to science at an early age.
Up until recently, however, there was not much out there for
homeschoolers in the way of easy-to-teach science. Most of it was
written in boring textbooks and required a lot of fancy, expensive
equipment. But now, there are a variety of choices, even for the little
ones. One of my favorites that I've been playing with this summer is
Dr. Keller's Pre-Level Chemistry (Real Science 4 Kids series). To see
how I've been using this with my granddaughter, who is only 6, check
out my blogs: http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/EmptyNestMom/554/ and http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/EmptyNestMom/2957/.
I'm amazed at how much she is catching on to Chemistry at her age! And
it's easy to understand which makes it easy for me to teach. I highly
recommend this curriculum. Check it out at her website: http://gravitaspublications.com/
