It's not glowing GREEN!!!!!!!!!
I had the most facinating day at work today. At 11:00 am today, they were removing CA-252 isotopes (used for radiation therapy) from the HFIR reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The samples are called "rabbits" (actually 6 inch cylindrical pieces of metal) I was told they were going to transfer the "rabbits" to the "rabbit hutch" so I HAD to go watch. I took my position on the observation deck overlooking the reactor bay. Imagine standing on a second story deck looking down at a swimming pool in your backyard and you'll have a visual image of what I was looking at. I was told to "watch the steel pipes there in the pool and you will see the rabbits go throught the pipes". WHAT!!!!! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SEE METAL PIECE TRAVELING INSIDE AN OPAQUE METAL PIPE!!!!!!! "You'll see" was the answer I recieved. After waiting for all the valves to be set to the proper postion, the room went almost pitch black. How am I suppose to look into the pitch black at a solid metal pipe and see anything!?!?! The next thing I know, I see these BRIGHTLY GLOWING streaks through the darkness below me. 9 of them to be exact. After the lights came back on, they asked me how many of the "rabbits" I saw. "Nine" was my response. "Good, that means we got them all" The rabbits were SO radioactively "hot" that they glowed enough to see them through the piping. And just so you know, the "Simpson's" is wrong. They didn't glow green. THEY GLOW BLUE!!!!!!!! * 4 Comments * Post A Comment! * Permanent Link Dateline: Oct. 30, 2007

Oh my gosh!!!!
I just re-read that Navy article from my last blog. This guy is scary smart.
Ok, the 99 ASVAB score isn't what got me (I scored a 99 on it also), but this guy went thru a 26 week nuclear power school (read in nuclear physics, heat transfer and fluid flow, high level calculus) and recieved a 3.95 GPA. This school is Monday thru Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm with an additional mandatory 35 hours per week study hall that must be completed outside regular school hours. (read 40 hours per week classroom time and 5 HOURS PER DAY, EVERY DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, FOR 6 MONTHS additional study hall time) Since the information is Classified, you couldn't take it home to study. I went thru this training and recieved a 3.42 GPA which was 6th in my class. The GPA system doesn't work the same as it does in regular school. A 4.0 GPA is not recieving an "A" in all your classes. A 4.0 GPA in Nuclear Power School is PERFECTION!!!! No test questions answered incorrectly for 6 months.
And people think that enlisting in the military is a second choice for people who can't make it in college. I beg to disagree. Well done, Robert Kilgore. * 0 Comments * Post A Comment! * Permanent Link Dateline: Oct. 19, 2007
HFIR, here I come...
Ok, the news came yesterday afternoon in the form of an e-mail.
This is going to be a life changing career switch in many ways. I won't be able to surf the internet nearly as much (or write blogs at work). I won't be able to assist all you wonderful people with your automotive repair needs. I will, however, have a job that can be a career (complete with advancement and educational opportunities, retirement, and 401k.) I will also be able to put the training I recieved in the Navy to good use. Let's all go out and celebrate. =)

Growing kids God's way.
Last night, I sat thru the most difficult session of "Growing Kids God's Way" for me, personally. Not that the content is difficult. I don't have a problem with holding my kids, giving them hugs and kisses, or saying "I love you" to them. The problem for me is the memories it always brings up. My parents divorced when I was 5, and shortly thereafter my dad remarried. I've blocked alot of the memories out, but I do know that I blamed his wife for my dad moving out of my house. (honestly, I don't know if anything was going on there or not, even to this day.) From what I've been told, I was pretty ugly to her when I went to visit. I do remember a time in junior high that she told my dad that she was going to leave while I was there and come back after I left (2 months over summer vacation!!!) Needless to say, my dad and I didn't have a close relationship. He lived on the other side of the country and I only saw him during summer vacation. I would fly across the country to visit and would spend the whole day by myself while he was at work. When he would come home, we would eat dinner and watch some movie together (he had, and still has, a huge movie collection). The weekends were sometimes different. The hard thing was that he lived on a farm. We did things together like bailing hay, cleaning out barns, etc. Not that doing these things was bad, they just weren't quality time that we could talk about life. He would be on the tractor bailing hay while I wasdriving a different tractor doing something else. We were together, but apart. I would have given anything to go outside and just kick the soccer ball around, or to play catch with the football. What hit me the most last night, was when the instructor talked about loving on your kids and letting them know that you, as the father, were proud of them. I didn't get either of that as a kid. I remember being a starter on a state championship contender basketball team and being told, "You'll never be in the NBA." I remember being an all-state track athlete and being told, "You'll never be in the Olympics." Both of the statements, of course, were true. But they still hurt and tear at me as a 32 year old adult. I heard for the first time I can recall these words from my dad. "I'm proud of you, Mike." I was telling him about the possibility of getting a new job at Oak Ridge. I cried after I hung up the phone. I've needed to hear those words from him for as long as I can remember. I have been trying for a long time to be able to tell my dad that I love him. Sounds like a simple thing, but for me, it's not. It's not that I don't love him (I do, VERY much). It's that I'm scared about what the response will be. I haven't verbalized it out loud yet, but I did do it in an e-mail this summer (baby steps.) Here was his response.
This is not a pity party for Mike; I'm ok. This is just a reminder to you dads to love on your kids with everything that is in you!!! Sometimes, it's hard. Believe me, I know. But taking the time will be life-changing for your children.

I'm so glad I'm happily married.
I do have to say that today I felt like I was back in Junior High, not a 32 year old adult. I have a new cashier, a 20 year old UT student, who is fairly attractive. She is getting ALOT of attention from my unmarried staff (and some of the married ones unfortunately). I also have a 20 year old car detailer, whom is also fairly attractive (or so I've been told) Here is the series of events as overheard today in the service office. Attractive male (AM) spending ALOT of time at attractive female's (AF's) cashier window during his lunchtime. After he leaves, AF makes comment to the other cashier that she thinks he is cute. That was her first mistake: letting me hear that comment. For any of you that know me, I CAN'T let that go without teasing her I am in Junior High again!!!! So.... later in the day, AF comes back to work. It's now 4pm. Her first question to me is, "Do you think AM will ask me for my phone number?" to which I respond, "Why don't you just go ask for his or give him your's?" OH NO!!!!!!!! I CAN'T DO THAT!!!!!!!!!! He'll have to ask me. Would you like me to say something to him? (Feeling very foolish). No, he'll ask if he wants to. Don't say anything to him. So, because I can't let such a great opportunity pass, I page AM to my office. This mortifies AF and she leaves to "go fax something on the machine up front". This now gives me the chance to talk to AM. "Why don't you ask AF for her phone number?" OH NO!!!!!!!!! I CAN'T DO THAT!!!!!!!! What if she says no? Oh brother, this is going to be a long afternoon. Needless to say, this went on until 5:59 tonight at which point AM asks AF for her number. I was not about to leave the office and let him do it in private. I was having way too much fun. He had to ask while I was there. After he asked, I said goodnight and walked out to my car. I couldn't resist one more jab so I called the office from my cell phone and AF answered. I started laughing and said, "If you would have just allowed me to say something, that could have been done in 30 secs, not an hour and a half." This just embarassed AF more and she told me she "was going to kill me." I'm so happy I already have Donna's number. =) * 2 Comments * Post A Comment! * Permanent Link Dateline: Oct. 12, 2007
Tropic Thunder--- Hawaii is a wrap!
My cousin, Brooks, e-mailed me today to let me know they had finally wrapped shooting in Hawaii for the movie he is filming with Ben Stiller et. al. He is happy to be leaving Hawaii and heading back to LA. (makes no sense to me =) Here are a few of the cool shots the movie's still photographer took.

Tropic Thunder
Well, my cousin is at it again. And since the Evan Almighty stuff seemed to bring some interest, I thought I would share a bit about the new movie Brooks is working on. This is not an endorsement of the movie, necessarily (Brooks said not to bring the kids if I go) but just some neat behing the scenes stuff. This is a Vietnam type era comedy (still trying to figure it out exactly) directed by Ben Stiller and staring Ben, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and Nick Nolte. Brooks is a steadi-cam operator and cameraman and from the sounds of his e-mails is working VERY hard on this movie. Here's some pictures and I'll update more as I hear more.
Complete with body armor and faceshield to protect from shell blanks from the guns and carrying an 85 lb. steadi-cam in Hawaii for 15 hours a day. And we think it's hot here!!!
Explosion made from a 1500 gallon "gas bomb". They could have just given it to me for my car instead!!! Post some of your favorite movie scenes or moments.

Has High School Musical taken over our house?!?!
... guess it depends on who you ask in the Williams' house. I would say that it has. For the last
And now, much to my delight, High School Musical 2 debut was last night.
So today, partyoffive comes home with this family present. The soundtrack.
So now, as I type, and listen to this lovely "gift" in the background, I can't help but smile. My children are smiling and dancing together with Donna. Now, they have yet another opportunity to join the characters of HSM.
Oh, and who could forget the family night playing
I do have to say, it is slightly growing on me and it is fun watching the rest of my family so happy when it is being played in some form or fashion. So, for those of you who are HSM junky's but can't always sit and watch the whole movie, this is for you.
Now you too can get your HSM fix from any computer in 3 minute clips. Enjoy!!!

Because I am not creative but can copy and paste...
... I'm going to attach a blog from Ben Olin, lead singer of This Beautiful Republic. They just started a European tour today. They are also going to be at Knoxville Christian Center on 9/7/07. Anyway... thought this would generate a good laugh. It did for me. Flight attendants and kindergarten teachers The last 18 hours we've spent traveling we've had a really eventless trip. I got to sit in the emergency exit row on the flight to France so I got to stretch out and be a little bit more comfortable for the 8 hour, 45 minute flight. I've accumulated about 2 hours of sleep in the meantime.... impressive, eh? :) The thing that I thought was the most worth noting was not the Paris airport, the in-flight entertainment system, the disgusting in-flight food, or the amazingly cool weather in Sweden. It's the fact that I now believe all flight attendants are basically Kindergarten teachers that couldn't find work. * 0 Comments * Post A Comment! * Permanent Link Dateline: Jul. 20, 2007

I've been tagged
Dr. Hibiscus tagged me on his blog so here is the deal. 1 Pick up a book that is near to you Page 12 reads: My indignation was a lava flow: "God, what's the deal? You know how I get. You know I get fired up sometimes, but I always seem to catch myself before I do something really dumb. The book is Lifestories written by Mark Hall, lead singer of the Contemporary Christian group Casting Crowns. If you like the music of Casting Crowns (or even if you don't), this book is wonderful. Mark Hall tells a story of inspiration that is behind each of the songs he has written for Casting Crowns. He then has a "God line" section where he ties the song and the inspiration back to scriptures. The last section is called "The bottom line" and asks some practical application questions for life. When I set the book down after typing out the sentences from page 12, the book was open to page 104 when I picked it back up. This is the first paragraph to "The Bottom Line" for the song "God Imitators".
That is the first of 3 bullets from this section associated with this song. I have to say that this book is very enjoyable from a Casting Crown's fan standpoint, but also forces you to look deep within yourself. I guess that was more then the tag said, but oh well. I'm tagging partyoffive, arajbrown, and queenofthehill * 1 Comments * Post A Comment! * Permanent Link Dateline: Jun. 18, 2007
Paul Potts
Wow!!! I just stopped by a friend's house today to drop off a copy of poster he had designed for Feed Your Faith. As I was turning to leave, Michael said "Wait, I want you to come and see this video." I was in a hurry to leave because I had promised to take the kids swimming. "I have five minutes", I said. So, here is the background. In England, there is a show called "Britian's Got Talent". It is the same as "America's Got Talent" in which people come on stage with any talent they have and try to impress the judges into voting them on to the next round. Piers is one of the judges (he is on both "AGT" and "BGT"). Simon Cowell from American Idol is one of the other judges. Anyway.... Paul Potts is a VERY ordinary Joe. He comes out on stage and you can tell from the looks on the judge's faces they don't think they will be impressed. When they ask "What will you be doing?" and the answer is "Singing opera" you can almost see the laughter in their eyes. That brings me to the clip of the performance. View this and then read on.
I have to say that I was very impressed by:
I have watched this video 3 times now (and probably would watch more if Donna would let me) and I have had tears in my eyes each time. I just think it is very cool when someone with amazing talent is so humble and gracious and nervous. He honestly didn't think he would make it past the first round. These shows have a lot of people that just want to be on TV, but every once in a while there is a "diamond in the rough." Congratulations Paul Potts. Go make your dream to sing come true. Sanctus Real/NEEDTOBREATHE/This Beautiful Republic
Ok, I just have to say that last Friday was one of the most fun days I've had in a very long time. So many firsts. FYF held it's first concert and it was a blast. Caleb attended his first concert just to name a few. The "day at the concert" started at 1pm when the truck from M&L Sound showed up. Guy (the sound guy) was great. He is a strong Christian and when he found out what FYF is all about, he cut almost 50% of the sound bill (praise God) But back to the concert... We took an hour loading in and hooking up the largest speakers I had ever seen. Hard work but also great friends to be working with and a good cause to be working for. When the sound was done, it was time to start loading in the bands. it was fun to work side by side with them and to listen to them joke about being "B-level bands" as they set up their own stage. (even though they are Dove award winners). Here's a shot of load-in.
After load-in, the guys from "This Beautiful Republic" were hungry. When we offered to go get them something and asked what they would like, Their answer was "ARBY"S!!!" So off went RickY to get 4 bags of Arby's sandwiches. The sad part about that was that when the catered meal from Texas Roadhouse showed up, they were too full to eat it. All the bands completed their sound checks and seperated to watch TV, play on computers, and to sleep. Here is the completed stage.
After dinner, we started running all over the place making sure everything was in order before the doors opened. The church had told us they would have volunteers available for anything we needed done, but they all seemed to have duties when they arrived. Thank you to all our friends that stepped in last minute to fill the voids!!! This Beautiful Republic took the stage first and completely ROCKED the place. They had a very energetic and loud set and I LOVED THEM!!! All 14 band members (3 bands worth) were great but I think Ben (TBR's lead singer) and I clicked the best. Here's a shot of ben and the e-mail he sent me after the show.
Next up was NEEDTOBREATHE, best know for their song "Shine On". I honestly believe they were the most gifted musically of the three bands (just my opinion) especially the lead singer. They did a great acoustic version of "Shine On" to end their set. Here is a shot of their lead singer.
Last but not least came Sanctus Real. They were truly amazing as well. Very humble and grateful guys. They were just happy to be able to play and to tell people about Jesus. 5 truly incredible guys. I look forward to working with them again soon. Here is my favorite shot from the day that I have seen so far. This is Matt, the lead singer of Sanctus Real.
All three groups hung out to sign autographs after the show. They posed for pictures. They especially like the kids that were there. Here is Caleb and his soccer buddy Hunter, with Sanctus Real.
We then loaded it all back into trailers and made the church look as if nothing had taken place.
After everyone had left, dad2three and I sat in the parking lot and rehashed the days events. I got home at 1am, the adreneline let me fall asleep at 2:30 am, and I was up for work at 6am. Needless to say, after work I came home, ate dinner, and fell asleep at 6:30pm. I woke up at 8am the next morning. :) Well, that is my recap of the day. I'm sorry it was so long (I could have added alot more) but these are the highlights. I definately have found something I love to do and feel like is making a difference. Best of all, I have a supportive wife that loves to help and a great partner in ministry. (Thanks RickY) I also have lots of good friends who are willing to help in any way they can. Thanks everyone and we'll see you at the next event. * 2 Comments * Post A Comment! * Permanent Link Dateline: May. 3, 2007
I see where I rank!!!
Well, today I finally let out some of the ill feelings I had been storing up towards smallworld. (joking here, kind of) For the last month, I have noticed that my wife, dad2three (out on parole I might add), and many of our friends are listed at the top of smallworld's friends list in a section called local yokels. My blog, however, failed to make this "cool kids club" list. There is another section much further down that you must look at to find me (I'll show this in a moment). The ironic thing was that I was told that before I got home today, this unfortunate situation would be resolved. I've now been home for 6 hours since this conversation and, as you can see, I'm still at the bottom of the list. Dr. Hibiscus BethTN TOSPUBLISHER Maybe someday.... P.S. Come see Sanctus Real in concert tomorrow night. Nothing like a shameless plug to lift my spirits!!! * 4 Comments * Post A Comment! * Permanent Link Dateline: May. 1, 2007

ABOUT SANCTUS REAL
LAST YEAR, MEMBERS OF THE DOVE AWARD-WINNING SANCTUS REAL discovered their greatest joy making and playing music together as the best of friends. Today, with the release of their third national record, The Face of Love, Sanctus Real comes of age, pressing forward to carry a compelling image of hope to an eager world. With this album, the four-member, Toledo, Ohio-based rock band is poised for 2006 to be its breakout year.
The Face of Love contains hard-hitting songs portraying universal themes of love, brokenness and the sometime elusive sense of God's presence. Inspired by real-life heartache and rediscovered joy, the emotions behind each track are vulnerable and undisguised, making this album the bands most accessible project. Further, Sanctus Real members Matt Hammitt (lead vocals), Mark Graalman (drums), Chris Rohman (guitars) welcome newest addition Dan Gartley (bass), a protoge of producer Mark Townsend. Gartley replaces former bassist Steve Goodrum. Enter producer Chris Stevens (tobyMac, Shawn McDonald), who helped the band channel its complex emotions into songwriting, their grief-stricken passion into powerful, emotive studio performances. The album's opening confessional, I'm Not Alright, locates the singer in desperate human brokenness, requiring him to move closer to God for strength. Inspired by Brennan Mannings The Signature of Jesus, the albums title track, The Face of Love, became an unabashed anthem of unconditional love. With The Face of Love, Modern Rock Album of the Year Winners Sanctus Real recognizes change throughout life is hard, even gut-wrenching. Yet it can finally usher empowering expectations. More to the point, death does not get the final word. Love does, and it happens every day, in a child's birth, in deciding to press on searching for another chance - even in making music with your best friends. This is the hope to start again, and in them are images of love. ABOUT FEED YOUR FAITH

Lee Strobel
I know i've been out of the blogging world for a while, but I'm back now. Yesterday was the fruition of months of hard work and planning as my non profit organization, Feed Your Faith, brought New York Times bestselling author and speaker Lee Strobel to Knoxville. Here is the breakdown of the day. Yesterday was such a whirlwind of a day. Let me start with what we did all day. I woke up at 5:15 am. I picked Lee up at his hotel (in Knoxville) at 6:30 am and headed over to the local Christian talk radio station. We were on air from 7- 7:30. We then went down the hall to the Christian music station and were on air from 7:30-8. At 7:45 the CBS affiliate reporter showed up and interviewed us both for the noon and 6pm news. I then sat around the radio station until almost 9 while everyone had all their "drool all over Lee Strobel" moments including talk about "how do I get the book I'm writing published/" to autographs and pictures. It was all very entertaining to sit back and watch.
We then went to breakfast and then I took him back to his hotel so that he could take a nap. I had, after all, dragged him out of bed at 2:30 am his time after he had flown all day the day before. I then ran back to the house to pull all my daily internet sales off the computer to add to my will call list, ran to the bank to get change then headed back to Cedar Springs Christian bookstore in Knoxville to meet with the bookstore owner and the radio host that was broadcasting live from the book signing we were having from 2-3:45pm. I got to the store at 12:45 and helped set up for the book signing (the remote radio broadcast went on live at 1pm).
The book signing ended at about 3:50 and I then sat through more "drool all over Lee Strobel" moments from the bookstore owner and staff (again very entertaining) and then proceeded to fight rush hour traffic to get to another TV station's "Live at Five" broadcast in their studio. We finished that up and then drove to the church. I got Lee situated in a hospitality room, shoveled down some BBQ in about 2 minutes (thanks Grace Baptist for catering in dinner) then ran out into the halls for the doors to open at 6pm. The event started at 6:30, I suffered through talking on stage for 10 minutes in front of 1248 people (not fun) then listened to Lee talk until 9pm. He signed books for people until about 9:45, I ran Lee back to the hotel, then turned on the UT basketball game on the radio. I switched from radio to TV when I pulled into my driveway. I had my heart broken when UT lost to Ohio State by 1 point after leading by 20 then fell into bed at about 1:30 this morning.
Now for the "real moments". Lee Strobel is one of the most genuinely "real" people I have ever had the privilege to meet. We sat around breakfast talking about family, home schooling, and friends. Lee's best friend Mark Mittelberg, FYF's next speaker, is a homeschool dad and Lee's daughter is planning to homeschool his grand daughter. We had a conversation about Rebekah at breakfast and how she had received her 5 year shots yesterday. When Lee met Donna in the book signing line at 9:30pm (I wasn't around), he told her "Thanks for letting me steal Mike all day and how are your daughter's legs feeling today after her shots?" He took the time to talk to everyone he met. He personalized everything he signed. I watched him have a lady come up to him in the book signing line and ask him to keep her son in his prayers. He told her "Why don't we pray for him right now" and just stopped the book signing to pray with this women.
Now for the best family moment of the day. Casey Nichols, Donna's brother, came and listened to Lee Strobel present his "Case for Christ". Casey has not been involved in church since childhood and is not currently a believer in Jesus Christ. When it was over, Donna asked him if he enjoyed himself. Casey turned to her and said "That was awesome. The band was great (we had a worship band playing while people were coming in)." He then said "I have never heard anyone explain about Jesus like that since I have been an adult. I went to Sunday school as a kid but his talk tonight was great." My jaw almost hit the floor. Keep Casey in your prayers that last night will find it's way into his heart but I am very encouraged by both his willingness to go and by his response.
