It's not glowing GREEN!!!!!!!!!
I had the most facinating day at work today. At 11:00 am today, they were removing CA-252 isotopes (used for radiation therapy) from the HFIR reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The samples are called "rabbits" (actually 6 inch cylindrical pieces of metal) I was told they were going to transfer the "rabbits" to the "rabbit hutch" so I HAD to go watch. I took my position on the observation deck overlooking the reactor bay. Imagine standing on a second story deck looking down at a swimming pool in your backyard and you'll have a visual image of what I was looking at. I was told to "watch the steel pipes there in the pool and you will see the rabbits go throught the pipes". WHAT!!!!! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SEE METAL PIECE TRAVELING INSIDE AN OPAQUE METAL PIPE!!!!!!! "You'll see" was the answer I recieved. After waiting for all the valves to be set to the proper postion, the room went almost pitch black. How am I suppose to look into the pitch black at a solid metal pipe and see anything!?!?! The next thing I know, I see these BRIGHTLY GLOWING streaks through the darkness below me. 9 of them to be exact. After the lights came back on, they asked me how many of the "rabbits" I saw. "Nine" was my response. "Good, that means we got them all" The rabbits were SO radioactively "hot" that they glowed enough to see them through the piping. And just so you know, the "Simpson's" is wrong. They didn't glow green. THEY GLOW BLUE!!!!!!!! CommentsDec. 3, 2007 - Untitled Comment
