Do Not Grow Weary

Do Not Grow Weary

or Rambling Thoughts of a Homeschool Mom ...

And let us not be
weary in well doing:
for in due season
we shall reap,
if we faint not.

Dogs – Are Two Better Than One?

Posted on Oct. 18, 2006 at 1:37 PM

We have a male Beagle who turned 1 year old in August. He is sweet, full of energy and I wonder if he would be happier with a dog buddy. Are most dogs happier if they have a buddy or is being the only dog better? Those of you who have owned dogs ... what is your opinion?

Waking Up To The Unexpected

Posted on Jun. 7, 2006 at 1:36 PM

Whew! What a day! This morning I woke to the sounds of our dog Amos whimpering. I thought he needed to go outside to do his morning business. As I lay there trying to wake up, it hit me! Peeee-uuuw! Oh, the nasty smell of doggie diarrhea. Oh yuck. Poor Amos, he has been sick all day. I am pretty sure it was something he ate and who knows what that was. He will eat just about anything! He loves to eat the fallen peaches from our peach tree, including the pits! Immature apples are fair game and rocks are doggie candy. I know he got three raisins yesterday that had fallen on the floor when my daughter made breakfast (raisins are a no-no for dogs). Add to the list sticks, string, paper, cardboard. Nope, not picky. Silly dog!! I am watching him to see if this will pass or if he needs to visit the veterinarian. I did some research and diarrhea is a dog’s way of correcting problems so hopefully he will be over this soon. Poor Mutt! Uh, err, I mean Beagle.

Doggie Update

Posted on Oct. 11, 2005 at 8:17 PM

News! News! Announcing the puppy’s official name:

Sir Amos of Country Lane

Amos for short. :) We are still enjoying our new addition though I did have a few moments where I questioned my own sanity when he work us up at 1:30 to go potty and then wanted to play!! I had forgotten how much work a puppy is … a little like having a newborn. lol My older girls, ages 13 and 15, have voluntarily taken on most of the responsibilities for Amos … what a wonderful relief for me!! My oldest doesn’t even mind the lack of sleep that comes with night wakings.

Amos is getting taller. My sweet hubby noticed that he is having an easier time getting in the back door. He is also practicing all kinds of doggie behavior. He can now bark and growl! So far he can only kind of howl. lol

We bought two books from Barnes and Noble about Beagles. One of them came with a training dvd that we have decided to implement. Since Amos will have four people responsible for helping to train him, we thought it would be a good thing to use the same training words and actions. He already comes most of the time when called. He is doing much better walking on his leash. House training … ha ha! Actually he does pretty good if we keep a close eye on him. He has not gone in his crate since the first day (and that was only a teeny bit) but does have accidents on the floor when we get busy and miss his signals.

Here is one of his latest pictures … doesn’t he look content and comfortable?! :)

Doggie Decisions …

Posted on Oct. 6, 2005 at 9:40 AM

The decision has been made and lifelong dreams have won! The newest member of our family:

After contemplating the actual size of a black lab, their ability to eat almost anything and reach it since they can be big, my sweet hubby started talking again about a Beagle. He has wanted a Beagle ever since he can remember. He called a couple different breeders in our area looking for one with female pups available. He found a very nice lady with some week old puppies, two little girls still unclaimed. They were so sweet. The one I held kept sucking on my hand. :)

The lady showed us around and let us know that she had some 6-week-old puppies in the barn but they were boys. Oh, they were so cute and … of course one claimed our hearts and we brought him home! He slept very well last night with a just a little bit of whining. Today … I think he misses his brothers! Lol He has whined, yelped and done his best to try to bark and howl. Sweet little manipulative guy … he wags his little tail, starts whimpering and get so excited when you come up to his crate. My girls are so excited and pleased with our newest family member … this puppy, yet unnamed, will never be lonely or unloved!!

My family wants a dog ...

Posted on Sep. 30, 2005 at 5:15 PM

My family wants a dog. My husband and my children are all in on it. They are wearing me down, I am about to relent and embrace the idea with my whole heart. Am I crazy?

We have six humans in this house, two adults and four children. If that were not enough beings taking up space, we have three cats. And fish. Our backyard is inhabited by desert tortoise, a garden and fruit trees. Did you know that as children get bigger, homes get smaller. Our living room is shrinking I just know it!

My family does not only want a dog. They want a big dog. A black lab. They would even be happy with a chocolate one. Or yellow. Second breed choice is a Beagle. Once my husband’s dream dog, desired since his youth, now second choice. The beagle is smaller so I am leaning in that direction. I would love a lab if … if … we had more room. A bigger yard and a bigger house. I can just see a fully grown lab stretched out for a little nap on the living room area rug, he would take up practically the whole thing!

My first choice for a dog in this house, with this size yard, with four children and two adults, is a little white fluff ball of a thing. A Bichon maybe. Something small that will not take up a lot of space. Something with a small mouth, a small stomach and I would hope a small appetite for chewing and eating non food items. We will probably end up with a black lab, maybe a Beagle. Very doubtful I will end up with small white fluff ball.
