Free Teachers Guide To Gail Gibbons Books
Posted in Website of the Week
Today I found a page that offers a free teachers guide to the books by Gail Gibbons. We love her books and can find almost all of them at our local library. It comes in two pdf files. One is the cover, the other is the actual book. There is two pages for each of the books it covers, most of which my son wants to learn about, so that is great.

Ok, my sister found this interesting picture on a website. Apparently someone made this and sold it on Etsy.

I love the little discription under the picture. Quote "He is not glued down, so you can take him out and cuddle him if you wish". So funny!

Free Vocabulary website
Posted in Website of the Week
I got this link from my homeschool support group here in Massachusetts and just had to share it with you all. I also needed an excuse to stop playing it and help my daughter with her science. LOL
It's called Free Rice. For every correct vocabulary word you get, they donate 20 grains to rice to those in need. Great cause for some fun. The words are hard and some ofthem I couldn't even pronounce. LOL. but after playing it for 10 minutes or so (I honestly lost count) I had 600 grains of rice in my bowl.

Website of the Week - MEP Math
Posted in Website of the Week
Like every website I mention, I try to keep it to free or nearly free things. This weeks website is for a free math program that I have begun to use with my daughter.
We had been using SOS, and after my computer died (the processor actualy melted to my motherboard), I went looking for a resonably priced math curriculum to use forthe rest of the year. I saw on a yahoo group that I belong to about this website that offers a free math curriculum.
Mathematics Enhancement Programme
It is a British math program, so the wording may be a little odd. It uses the metric system and pounds. I figure my daughter should learn the metric system because we are the only country that doesn't use it. I have her change the pounds into dollars so it doesn't confuse her. I don't have her convert it over (unless she wants to find out the different in our price compaired to theirs). For example, if it says £1.25 I tell her to think of it as $1.25, that way the answer will come out the same.
She is also learning a bit more about their culture. For example, football over there is soccer over here and a lot of our city and towns (and even states) are named after places over in England. She has a fun time finding those places on a map.
We have been using this program for a little over a month or so. Chantelle just finished up year 7 unit 4 (the test is sitting next to me waiting to be corrected). Year 7 in England is like grade 6 over here, but it is way more advanced. She has a bit of a hardtime, buttakes her time and has been getting it and it is sticking. All her other tests have been passed with 80 and above.
Everything you can need is on this site. From the student books, to detailed lesson plans, to outlines, activites and even posters for the younger years. Some of the things (like the tests) are password protected, but you can email them for the password.
I have saved the student books, burned them to a disk and had them printed and comb bound at Staples. It was a little pricy (at least 30.00 per book) but I wasn't eating up all my ink and paper. Not to mention I can't comb bind things here at home. You can buy the books, but they will not ship outside the UK.
There is even a yahoo group for homeschoolers using this math program. It has been a wonderful help for me so far (I got the password from this group instead of emailing for it).

Now you can add your signature along side all the founding fathers signatures on the Declaration of Independence. Just choose your pen, each has a different style of writing, type your name in and hit submit. Then you can print it out and add it to your History Notebooks.
Declaration of Independence
I wish I had found this last year when we were studying this time period. Look like I will have to go back and use it later on when we hit that time period again.

Website Of The Week: Homeschool E-Store
Posted in Website of the Week
I love, love, love this website. Every book on this website is in electronic form. Meaning that it is available to download once you pay for them. I have bought a few books from them and are very happy with them. It saves me money on shipping and the books are even discounted because they are in e-form verses book form. I am able to print out the pages of the books I ordered as I need them and even get them bound at an office supply store like Staples or Office Max.
http://www.homeschoolestore.com
Every week (or bi-weekly I honestly forget) they also offer a free book to download. This weeks book is:

The book is 160 pages long and filled with 50 fun things you can make. It brought back memories of "Oh, ya I remember this" from when I taught at a preschool before I had kids.
This is one website that you have to book mark and visit over and over again.

Website of the Week: Free Virtual Role-playing Games
Posted in Website of the Week
Online role-playing games are big in our house. Both my husband and I play them and our kids are starting to get into them as well. These are a few of the games that we have or are currently playing. Most are free or offer a free trial.
Disneys ToonTown Online
http://play.toontown.com/webHome.php
This is the most popular game in our home. We have two accounts so that either our kids can play together or my husband and I can play together. You start out with a free three day trial and if you want to continue on, the monthly subscription is only $9.95 a month (cheaper if you pay for 6 months or a year at once).
In the game you pick out a toon to play from a monkey, bear, rabbit, cat, mouse, horse, and duck. Then you are able to pick out silly names or even put in a name of your choice. (I have a monkey named Heather Feather). From there you are assigned certain tasks to do that involve from making a friend to “killing” cogs (the bad guys). You are given items to defeat the cogs such as a pie or a water bottle. You get more gags (as they are called) as you get higher up in points.
One thing I love about this game is that you can not talk to anyone unless you are “secret friends”. Basically what this is you get a password that you give to your real life friend to put in so that you can talk to that person while playing the game together. There are phrases that your toon can say to every one, but only a secret friend can hear what you actually type. Other people around you will just hear either “meow meow meow” or “squeak squeakity squeak” depending on what animal your toon is.
Another Disney game that I have played a little bit (and still do from time to time is:
Virtual Magic Kingdom
http://vmk.disney.go.com/vmk/en_US/index?name=VMKHomePage
This is a free to play game. You basically are at the Magic Kingdom and can play games in the different areas of the park. My favorite game is in the Pirates of the Caribbean. You are in charge of a pirate ship and you have to shoot cannon balls at the other teams ships. The team with the most points wins. After you win, you get credits or money you can use to buy virtual items for your virtual person. You have a room in the game where you can place your items.
Another cool thing about this game is if you even visit one of the actual parks in Florida or California, there are little quests that you can do to get free items for your virtual person. I haven’t done any of the quests as I haven’t been to either park since I was little, but friends of mine have. They game me some extra cards that they got so I was able to get some free items.
There is also a big swear filter on in this game. Because you can talk to other people, you have to be careful of what you say. The filter is so good at stopping all swears or nonsense words. You may be able to type in the word, but if you hit enter, nothing will happen. I had typed in “hehe” or a giggle once and it wouldn’t let me use it.
Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/
This is a free game to play with the option to subscribe to have access to even more games. I forget the actually amount the subscription costs, but I don’t think it was more than $10.00. My husband and I use to play this game back when there weren’t as many games as there are now.
In the game, you are a pirate. You start out as the lowest pirate and have to play games to earn points and get higher up in the ranks. There are also teams that you can belong to and when you are on a team, you are able to train to be a captain so that you can use your own boat. Some of the games that you can play are bilging, where you are pumping out the water from inside the boat (was my favorite game), gunning, where you are in charge of loading the cannons during a battle. The battles take place often while you are sailing the high seas. Either another person’s ship or a npc (non player character) ship will come after you. Sometimes there are even battles between teams.
Again, this game has swear filters so that you can not say them. Instead you get little pirate words like “Barnacles”
I will post a couple more that we are currently playing later on in the week.

Website of the Week: Rainforest maths
Posted in Website of the Week
http://www.rainforestmaths.com/
This is a free interactive website for grade k-6 of math games. There are hundreds of questions and tons of games to play. It uses the metric system for measurment because it is from the UK, but that is ok seeing how we are probably the only country in the world not using the metric system.
My daughter has been having a hard time understanding her math work, so when I found this site I had her give it a try. She loves it. it has helped her understand her math a little bit more. My son hasn't used it yet, but I messed around playing the games at his level and they are easy to figure out.

I have used many of the books here for read alouds with my own children and they love them. You could spend all day looking at all the different things here. If you can think of a topic, it is on this website. From the usual math and history to nursing and etiquette. This is a must see site.
