Just to add a bit to my previous post, Mike Huckabee and the HSLDA, I just read on Spunky's post that Ned Ryun actually no longer works for HSLDA. This does not lessen the importance on his stand or opinion of HSLDA's endorsement of the candidate. As a matter of fact, the information revealed by him on his blog in reference to his leaving HSLDA PAC is quite telling and only solidifies the question of the hour: Why is the HSLDA endorsing Mike Huckabee? Here is what he had to say in his post, I’m Not at HSLDA Anymore:
My web designer is on a month long honeymoon, and I’m behind on updating my blog profile. I think some people thought I was still at HSLDA. I am not at HSLDA anymore, folks, and have to say, thank God. Dissent is not allowed in Mike Farris’ world, as was demonstrated last year at PHC (a travesty, and BTW, the professors accused of not being Christians, etc. were all cleared by their churches of any wrongdoing; I could blog on that issue for awhile, and maybe I will in the future). If I was still at HSLDA blogging like I have been, I would have probably either been told to stop or risk being fired. So I hate to disappoint some who think that freedom of thought and conscience are allowed at HSDLA. I was still at HSLDA when HSLDA-PAC endorsed Huckabee, but even though I was the PAC director at the time, was not informed of the endorsement until after the fact. I actually laughed when I was informed of it. I brought up the fact that we do not endorse in primaries unless there is a clear-cut conservative vs. liberal match-up. I was told by Mike Smith, President of HSLDA, that these were extraordinary circumstances, which I heard as really meaning Smith and the HSLDA board members lacked the courage to say no to Farris. As has been clearly documented by Spunky Homeschool, HSLDA has condemned Huckabee’s anti-homeschool legislation in the past, and yet now endorses him because . . . I think HSLDA members need to ask, Is the defense of homeschooling still the priority for HSLDA, or are there other things that are priority? And really, what are membership dues being used for? This bothers me:
"I was still at HSLDA when HSLDA-PAC endorsed Huckabee, but even though I was the PAC director at the time, was not informed of the endorsement until after the fact."
blessings!

It does bother me... a lot. As a matter of fact, our HSDLA membership expires soon and I am struggling with whether or not to renew? Opinions on that?

Yes, it IS disturbing! I am interested in investigating both sides of this matter further.
"He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him...The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge...The first one to plead his cause seems right, until his neighbor comes and examines him."
Proverbs 18:13, 15, 17
(BTW, I had no idea that HSLDA was endorsing Huckabee. Yea, where have I been?! I need to read more blogs.)

All I can really say, Christina, is that we discontinued our membership with HSLDA. We really found it no longer necessary.
And... a friend of mine has been paying their yearly dues to HSLDA for several years now, and the only homeschool litigation they were in was not something the HSLDA will litigate for - a custody-homeschool issue with her son's father. That makes no sense to me.
I do not see the value of the HSLDA on a lifetime-affiliate basis. You (and Russ) have to decide if you do. I know that family law lawyers can read laws and interpret from there. There are also some other HSLDA-type firms out there that are 'just for homeschoolers' too.
Did you get to read the original post? :)
pureandsensible: TOTALLY disconcerting! Like a double-minded man??
Thanks for your comments!

I came back to your sight to get Spunky's link and I noticed a follow-up.
I hope you didn't misunderstand, but I AM in agreement with you about it being disturbing. I just want to further investigate this all for myself before I (emphasized) jump to any personal judgments against HSLDA. I am so glad you brought this up. Thank you!

Sunday, December 30, 2007 - I wasn't confused about your agreement of this issue: HSLDA Support

I wasn't confused about your agreement of this issue: HSLDA Support, but I was confused about your comment on Spunky's post, because you inferred that I support Hillary and the CRC, which is totally FALSE. I am afraid of all of the rights that we as a country will no longer have if she gets elected and signs the CRC. We can pretty much kiss homeschooling freedoms - or parental freedoms - goodbye!
Besides, I think another feminist in the White House is the LAST thing this country needs.

THanks so much for posting this....I has always felt "unprotected" because we were not members of HSLDA, I was being homeschooled when HSLDA first started up and I know my mom always promoted them. I had already read some Mike Huckabees views about education and was definitely not comfortable with him as a candidate because of it.....

I think it is concerning. If there is "more to the story" I would like to know it, but it is one of those things not likely to come to light.
I joined HSLDA when we started homeschooling because it is just what everyone did. But we let it run out because I just don't see the need. I think they have outlived their purpose...perhaps most notable in their own alerts which point to every time a homeschooler is contacted by CPS. There are rarely any real issues, and they are usually in the legislature, not the courts. The fact is that the parent's right to direct the education of the child has been established, and is supported by the courts as well as by legislation. It isn't time for us to sit back and ignore what is going on, but I don't think I need to pay $100 or whatever the membership dues are to get newsletters about what is going on in my state legislature. Only two have come across for NE in over three years that I can remember and only one was relevant to homeschooling.
