We use the Bible in our homeschool. The older children who can read are to read a Proverb in the morning and a Psalm at night, before bedtime. I am not as consistent as I would like to be with a time for us all to sit and read the Word and notebook the passages, but we do talk all day as occasions arise to put the Word into action. When there is conflict, we apply the Word. When a kindness is shown, we talk about it as it reflects the Word. If there is a selfish attitude, we talk about God's providence in our lives and how being selfish and depressed about not getting our way is not trusting in what God has for us. It is trusting in our own expectations and ways and plans for our lives. We just do not trust God at these times, and it is sin, and it is taken into account as we walk and talk daily.
Deuteronomy 6
1Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: 2That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
3Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
We studied Romans 12 last week, and it was a very good study. We take time to sit and talk and pray. We put together worship folders, and we all love to worship in song. All of this is an important part of learning. Worshiping at home, in prayer and Scripture reading and song. I feel it is a mandate by the Lord to do so. We take our relationship with the Lord seriously, not just a Sunday-goin'-to-meetin' type of faith.
Recently, our understanding of Scripture was corrected in 'the original Greek'. I take issue with that. When we are addressing life and looking to God's Word, we do not search for the version that best fits what we mean. We search for God's meaning in His Word. I believe the Word stands on its own merits in English. The KJV has stood for almost 400 years. It is well-written as the Word of God, and through it He speaks to those searching for His Will. I think many times, Believers feel they must show their expanded knowledge as a puffing-up or even to make it fit their own meanings.
I am not going to argue versions here. We use the original King James Version in our household. It is the accepted version, and I personally love the way it is written: Thee's, Thou's and Tho's included. It is not someone's opinion of what the verses might mean. I had no idea ten years ago that The Living Bible is just a man's understanding and translation of what the KJV said. I do NOT want to read his opinion as the Word of God. I also don't want to read what is presented for today's pop culture in today's lingo. We have diluted words and definitions, and I would prefer to go back to the simple and pure meaning. I want our children to be articulate and have understanding of words, not lower their vocabulary by finding the easiest-to-read version. My choice. Matt's choice. No arguments.
I take no issue with my friends who are learning Hebrew or Greek. However, if God meant for us all to learn Greek and Hebrew and go back to the original language to be able to gain knowledge from His Word, well, then, not too many people would even get saved or pick up the Bible, would they? There are far too many who do not speak Greek or Hebrew for that to be a pre-requisite to understanding.
Paul took the Gospel to the Gentiles. More than likely, they knew many languages. Probably not Hebrew, but they did not need a Hebrew degree to understand what the Spirit spoke and the simplicity of God's Word. I do not think going to the original Greek is imperative to understand what God is speaking to you. Jesus Himself spoke to farmers, fishermen and tax collectors. I do think learning Hebrew and learning about the culture is a great thing and will cause a greater understanding of God the Father and Our Lord's sacrifice, but that is for another time!
blessings!

We aren't a KJV-only family, but I agree with your point. Greek and Hebrew text isn't a prerequisite; and I've personally seen the puffed up "Pharisee" attitude - I used to possess that same characteristic, unfortunately...
Oh Lord, how we need You....

Well said Jacque! I am so encouraged by the way scripture is a part of your lives, as we have been striving to reach that place in our home as well. My husband and I want to imprint God's Word in our children's hearts so that it is as natural for them to turn to that as it is to go to refrigerator when they are hungry.
