China never disappoints me with hilarious signs! Here are two more.
Okay, this isn't hilarious. This is actually sad because it reflects the attitude in China towards those with disabilities. (By the way, a handicapped accessible toilet is a rare thing here.)

• September 26, 2008 - Shoes
I am constantly amazed at the shoes I see women wear in China. Truly amazed. On so many levels.
First of all, they seem so dangerous. I personally have fallen down multiple times in China just walking down the very poorly constructed or maintained sidewalks. It's not uncommon for there to be huge holes, loose tiles, and various rubbish in your path. To even consider walking on these treacherous sidewalks in any shoe with a heel, causes me to shudder.
Secondly, they look so uncomfortable. People in China walk a lot! Even to take a bus somewhere you still have to walk to the bus stop and then to your final destination. Don't their feet hurt after wearing those shoes all day? (Actually I know they do! I've seen women with their shoe straps pulled down below a bright red heel. Or as soon as they sit down, their feet come out of their shoes for a few minutes of respite.)
Sometimes China seems like the Leave it to Beaver life of the American 50's when women wore stockings, pumps, and a dress to shop for groceries. I see ladies in the supermarket wearing dresses that we'd wear only to a wedding or other fancy dinner party. They are too dressy even for church -- dresses with layers of chiffon over the skirt or pearl embellishments on the bodice. It makes me feel quite slouchy in my denim capris, Chaco sandals and a t-shirt.
And then thirdly there's just the whole fashion thing. Now, this, certainly, is a matter of taste and opinion. I'm sure these ladies in shorts, ankle high pantyhose and high heel pumps feel stylish. But to me it, even after six years, it just looks odd.
For me, I'll stick with flats -- sturdy, well constructed flats that keep me walking without blisters.

• September 20, 2008 - A Blessed Dog Peeler
I won't bother commenting a lot on this find. I'll let you, my readers, do that.

If you can't read the fine print, here it is:
With incredible magic of the pretty dog,
you too will be the best friend
like a lot of many people all over the world.
I needed a new peeler anyway, and this was well worth the 5 RMB of laughter I got. I was born in the year of the dog, remember. And we all know that I'm super blessed! And it does work well; I tested it on carrots tonight.

• September 19, 2008 - Ants Nature Study
We've finally gotten back into the swing of nature walks. This week our focus was inspired by Sprite's current read-- Christian Liberty Press's Nature Reader. The material on ants is very engaging and offers enough mystery that you want to go outdoors and actually see what you're reading. So we did. Ants. How easy can it get? Ants are truly everywhere! And they are fascinating!
As the book suggested, we made a makeshift ant farm with a small glass jar. I'd never done that, and didn't think it would work. But our jar is small enough that we can see the ants building tunnels and carrying food down them. It's quite interesting. We keep it covered with black paper when we're not studying the ants.

And for recording our observations, I made some notebooking pages which you can access at my page at HSLaunch.

• September 16, 2008 - Box House
This box was slated for the recycler, but Sprite rescued it for a house.
Sadly, her Chinese friends had never seen a box used as a playhouse. Hard to believe, but true. Once they understood, they loved it!

• September 13, 2008 - About My Blog Makeover
After reading your comments and evaluating the header after a night's sleep, I've changed the header again.
Before

Now

I think it's a bit easier to read but still incorporates those cute letter discs. If I were more computer savvy, I could make it "perfect." But in these blogging matters, I often have to settle for "good enough." I've made a promise with myself to not spend money on this blog -- no buying fancy template packages and such. I was sorely tempted lately. But this free makeover has removed my temptation.
I got the wonderful papers and designs from Shabby Princess in a set called Festival. (Free download of course!) Look and see what Amy has done with the same set on her blog. It's lovely! For more freebies from Shabby Princess visit here. Their products are so beautiful and easy to work with.
I used Microsoft Publisher to design the header. Then I simply saved it as a GIF (or JPEG) file to upload to Photobucket.
I'd love to make a divider between my blog posts. But I can't find instructions for how to do that. Found how-tos here at HSB! That's done! I'll probably keep tweaking it as time allows. It's fun to play with! And your encouragement that it looks nice is wonderful to hear.

• September 13, 2008 - Blog Makeover
So what do you think? I've been meaning to work on this for some time. My last design, though I loved it, was just getting stale. It was time for something new and fresh. I changed my header, backgrounds, and font colors.
If you're reading by email or via a feed reader, pop over and see what you think. If anything is hard to see or read, please let me know. I am more than willing to change font colors if they are hard on the eyes. And are my sidebar links showing up in two colors for you? They are for me. I'll have some tidying up to do, but for the most part, I'm finished.
