• June 21, 2008 - Online Freebies! Homeschool Launch & Homeschool Catalogs
Homeschool Launch has loads of great files created by other homeschool moms just like you! More and more moms are joining and sharing their skills with others. I invite you to browse the files and consider sharing some things you've made with the homeschool community!
Notebooking pages are especially abundant there. (Ever wondered how to make your own notebooking pages? I've just finished a tutorial for that very thing, using MS Publisher.)
For example, I recently uploaded a file I made for my daughter. We use the Wordly Wise vocabulary workbooks, but I found that she was encountering spelling errors as she looked back a page or two to copy the new word. I simply typed all the words into a word document and printed it out for her reference. A few moments invested like this at the beginning of the year make for a much easier experience later. I uploaded the Wordly Wise C word list to HS Launch since there may be others who could benefit from this type of document. Why redo it if someone has already done the work? My page with all my uploaded files is here.
And another freebie --catalogs! Anyone still looking for curriculum? Or if you're like me, you're a chronic curriculum browser, always on the prowl for the latest new title or project idea. When I went to USA last fall, one of my preparations was to order a lot of HS catalogs to be ready for me once I got there. I passed many an hour in the car reading through book descriptions in these catalogs. I've listed my favorites on a new Squidoo lens Homeschool Catalogs. The links will take you directly to the catalog request pages for my favorite ones. If you have favorites I didn't list, please feel free to comment there with your addition.

• March 5, 2008 - Weblink Wednesday -- FREE Math Books
For Weblink Wednesday, I want to share a really great math resource.
At XP Math, you can download FREE math books, Glencoe texts, and other resources. Wow!
I downloaded the Fast Ideas For Busy Teachers for grades 4 and 5, and they look like they have some fun activities -- even living math activities!
There are other books appropriate for older students, including algebra, calculus, and statistics (yuck!). There are also reference sheets -- two or three page documents filled with formulas and hints.

• February 16, 2008 - Singing the Praises of Geography Songs
A couple of months ago, we were in a fast food restaurant in an Atlanta suburb when I let Sprite climb around in the indoor play area. A man with two small boys came in and watched them play. From his accent, I guessed he was not a native born American but an immigrant.
I tried to strike up a conversation with him about his sons. Then I asked him where he was from. His answer-- “Ethiopia.” He had a weary tone of voice as he added, “It’s in Africa.” I know all too well the irritation of explaining yourself over and over as a foreigner in a foreign land. (At least everyone knows where and what America is!) This man had obviously run into quite a few Georgians who had no idea where Ethiopia was.
To reassure him, I added, “Yes, I know. It’s on the Horn of Africa, south of the Red Sea. It’s by Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti.” His mouth dropped open with surprise. “Have you been there!?” he asked, in amazement. “Oh, no, I haven’t,” I replied.
There was a pause. Then, I just couldn’t resist asking the next question, “Are you from Addis Ababa?” The poor man almost fainted. “Yes, I am, in fact.”
“Yeah,” I said, “I thought so since it’s the most heavily populated city in that area.”
His surprise turned into a big grin. He’d finally encountered someone who knew at least a tiny bit about his corner of the world.
Bless his heart, he had no idea that all this knowledge was thanks to Geography Songs. I already knew that Ethiopia was in Africa, but everything I told that man was learned from the "Horn of Africa" song on the CD.
Learning through songs really works! For more about learning via audio means visit my new Audio Homeschool lens.

• January 17, 2008 - Search Tool
I made a gift for you! Actually it is something I wanted for myself, but I decided to add it to my blog so that it's handy. And, of course, you can use it too!
It's a Search Box. Look in the right column between Curriculum We Use and the Keepers of the Home blog ring. This is no ordinary websearch box. This search tool will search only Homeschool Blogger blogs. Don't you ever want to research a certain unit study idea or homeschooling philosophy, but you really want to read what real, everyday moms have to say about it? Well, here is the way to do that. (I do realize that there are loads of awesome homeschooling blogs not here at HSB, but this search tool doesn't access those. Sorry.)
I was looking for ideas for a Physics lapbook and found some neat resources that other moms had already discovered and linked, just by using my new search box. Why reinvent the wheel? First, see what other families have done. That's one of the main benefits of the Internet and of blogging, in my opinion.
So, try it out. And let me know how it works for you. (By the way, I created it at Yahoo Search Builder.)
