Our School with Books and Notebooks

Because Inquiring Minds Want To Know!

Monday is Artist Study. we read about the artist and view his art online.

Tuesday is Composer. We read about our composer and listen to his music.

Wednesday is 'Sing for America'. We learn the origination of the song and sing.

Thursday is 'Sing for Praise'. Same as above.

Friday we draw. 'Draw 50 People.'

Bible is daily. We read one chapter. We are finishing Proverbs. They can illustrate or write a verse.

Copywork is daily. They can pick any passage to copy from their   copywork books. Quality not quantity.

  A few lines of cursive.

Math is daily. Math copywork, math workbook, math to read and math war. (I think I covered every base!)

Spelling is daily. I pick six words from 'Spelling Wisdom'. They copy them each day for a week and Friday I test them.

Poetry is daily. They read their weekly poem to me. On Friday they recite it from memory.

We read a story from here. Daily.

History is daily. A different history book  is read everyday.

Baldwin's Fifty Famous people is read online. Our notebook is divided in five sections with each book title labled on the dividers. The kids illustrate on a page and write a few sentences and/or narrate.

We use our globe and often use the internet and other shorter books related to our readings.

Spanish is three days a week. We were using Visual spanish online.

I like it, but we are switching to this. I'm getting it from the library. I'll let you know more about it.

We do this twice a week. I read the word and meaning. They write on their index cards.

We do grammar daily. One page.

Science is done daily. Our notebook is labeled by each book we do that week.  They illustrate and/or write what they like from the reading.'Great Inventors and Inventions' is read online (almost done with that), as well as 'Storybook of Science.' We use maps with Holling C. Hollings books.

We do short 'lessons'.

After lunch we are done...

and off to do as we wish!

                       AND...

       Read... Daily and Often!

I love to see what others are pulling together for school. Maybe I will post what we do after we get started for the year. We are starting high school this year so our day will look a little different.....longing for the days of grammar school. Sigh.

Beautiful! You are so organized. I liked your notebooks too. What a wonderful idea for keeping the kids' work together. I definitely agree that it should be bound and kept.

Warmly,

Keri,

I can't believe you and your family don't keep nature notebooks. You are always on the hunt for great treasures and a nature journal seems right up your alley. I look forward to seeing what you do this year.

Thanks for the comment over on my blog,

How neat -- you posted a whole deal to answer my question! I'm so glad I caught the answer. ά

This looks great.

I'm dividing up our notebook... I had 1 for each student. This year they are going to have 6 each. LOL Quite a difference. Going to go the Wal-Mart $1.00 route. Thanks for the look-see. I love to be continually challenged to do my very best.

I enjoyed your post. This is a great open house!

I too like how you do an art/music related activity each day.Cool schedule. I've been doing well with art, but music is really falling through the cracks.

You said you read online. Do you read from the monitor? You don't print it out? That's the problem with online books -- once you print them, they aren't free anymore (ink, paper).

I have that Handbook of Nature Study in my Rainbow Resource wishlist. I really need a kick in the pants for that aspect of HS too!

Sounds like you have a wonderful school day! We also use Muzzy, although, its been very loosely done. I plan on working on it more frequently this year. It can be a little confusing for the kids, but they loved the cartoon aspect of it and I got it for free, so I can't complain too much.
How do you like English from the roots up? I've been wanting to give it a try!
Blessings!

Teaching the Trivium

How can you give your children the tools they need to teach themselves? Long ago students were first taught how to learn. Today, students are taught an encyclopedia of subjects – trivia – but they are not taught the basic skills of learning: to discover, to reason, and to apply.
