October 11, 2006 - Our Helicopter Ride |
Sunday afternoon we had reservations for a
helicopter ride over Glacier National Park. This would be a first
for all of us. My children were a bit concerned about me since
they discovered my fear of heights a few days before. Planes
don't bother me, but I wasn't so sure about the helicopter. For
the most part it was a terrific experience.
We took off, Steve in the front seat with the pilot and the kids with
me in the back. We saw parts of Glacier that most people never
see...hidden lakes, waterfalls, and lookouts on the top of
mountains. The lakes were pure blue and the glaciers were
fascinating.
It was amazing as we flew right next to several moutain peaks.
The only time I was a bit unsure was when we would lean to one side or
the other as we turned around. Other than that I loved the
ride.

| I think riding in a helicopter would be great accept for the tilting side to side, like you said. One day I hope to experience one. We live near the Royal Gorge (outside of Caρon City, CO). There is this guy who gives tourists rides in his helicopter. He is crazy, buzzing the side of the mountain... I'm not sure if I would let him give me my first ride or not?! If I did, I would probably not have much to fear after that! :) |

After our helicopter ride, my husband asked if I saw the commendations the pilot had received. I found out that the pilot had received commendations from Glacier National Park for his rescue of a hiker and his work on the 2003 fire. They told him the hiker probably would not have survived, had it not been for his piloting ability.
We came close to mountains, but not in a wreckless manner. For the most part it was a great ride.
