June 27, 2008 - Incredible Deals...through Monday, June 30

Well, you haven’t heard from me because I’ve been in Texas getting our house ready to move back…yea!!! I didn’t realize how tiring painting could be. I sanded, primed and painted our living room and Hunter’s bedroom. Going up & down that ladder to paint the crown molding is a great workout for my legs :-)

I also worked on our hall and made lots of trips to Lowes and the local paint store.
You can see a few pics on the next posts.

So why am I writing if we are in the midst of moving from Idaho to Texas?
We need to clear out our inventory and reduce the weight we pay United Moving. So we are offering what’s left of our inventory at incredible prices. You won’t see the prices again.

October 5, 2006 - Do Not Worry...

This morning I was quickly reminded that I need not worry about homeschooling and raising my children.  When I trust God for these concerns, He will take care of them.  (Notice I said "when"; I did not make an emphatic statement).

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on (or what you will teach or mentor). Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birdsof the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?
Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
So why do you worry about clothing (or education)?  .....
...Therefore do not worry, saying 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' (or 'What shall we read? or What curricula shall we use?')
For after all thse things the Gentiles seek. (public schools seek)  For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
But seek FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
     Matthew 6:25-34

Blessings,
Kerry

ps.  do not worry today :-)

September 22, 2006 - Why a Christian Education?

Why offer a Christian Education to your children?  Sounds like a great question to contemplate.  Many parents believe a Christian Ed allows you the opportunity to avoid pagan education and they are right.  But, there is a much deeper reason for giving your children a Christian education.

Let’s look at two reasons to provide a Christian education for your children.  It ensures the future of the Christian church.  If you do not raise your children to understand their faith, they will probably tube it.  If they don’t tube it, their children probably will.  This past Sunday evening I heard an address about this very issue while we visited a church in Seattle.  The pastor reminded us of a flourishing Scottish church at the end of the nineteenth century.  Many of the nation’s important dignitaries attended this church regularly.  A century later the church has a small congregation and a liberal perspective on Christianity.  How could this happen?

Parents did not ensure that their children understood their faith.  Their children only mentally assented to their parent’s beliefs.  When this happens, Christianity won’t continue with your young people.  Their faith does not penetrate their heart.  It does not affect the goals and objectives they have for the future.  They are simply a shadow of their parent’s faith.  And we all know that a shadow can not produce another shadow, thus no passing on of faith.

The second reason to equip your children with a Christian education is to develop leaders who think Biblically.  We need Christian leaders who can out-think the unbelieving world.  I believe Christian leaders, entrepreneurs and statesmen will make a difference in the future.  It is our responsibility to teach our children how to make Biblical decisions in a variety of life’s issues.

It is imperative that you instill a Scriptural worldview in your children.  A worldview that is foundational in their life and equips them to respond Biblically to music, news, studies, jobs, art, business and all areas of their lives.  If you are not preparing your children to make decisions based on the Bible, you should re-think your homeschool objectives.  A worldview based on Scripture should be top priority in educating your children.

No matter how or what you do in your homeschool, there will be gaps…no question about it!  My question to you is which gaps will your children have in their education.  Which gaps can you live with?  For me, I can live with some grammar and math gaps.  If my children don’t know what a gerund or polynomial is, I am not going to fret.

If my children don’t know how to make a decision based on Scripture, I most definitely will fret.  I do not want any gaps in their Christian maturity and character development.  I can live with academic gaps, but I can’t live with Biblical gaps.  Thus, our homeschool’s top priority at the younger ages is character development.  At the older ages, our highest priority is developing a Biblical worldview in ALL areas of life (research, family, jobs, business, music, entertainment, news, and so on).

What are your priorities in your homeschool?  Which gaps will your children have?  Are you sure your children will continue in their Christian faith?

Kerry

September 10, 2006 - Living Book on How to Homeschool

You might be wondering what in the world do I mean by a living book on homeschooling.  I just finished an excellent biography with many living ideas on how to homeschool.

Up from Slavery is Booker T. Washington's autobiography.  I was fascinated with his entire story, from slavery to professor/founder of Tuskegee Institute to honorary degree holder from Harvard to friends of US Presidents.  Besides his life story, Washington shares his ideas on education.  As he decides how to set up Tuskegee, you learn what is important to him in educating his students.

Over the next few days, I will share some of Washington's ideas on teaching students.  I found his balance between work and academics refreshing, as well as inspiring.  His ideas can naturally be implemented in your homeschool, especially a Leadership Education homeschool.

September 6, 2006 - First Day of School

Yesterday was our first day of school and it was lots of fun.  Actually, I'm glad to get back into a routine.  Since we travel during the summer to homeschool conventions, it is difficult to stay on a schedule.  August was a bit crazy since I released my book, Raising Leaders Not Followers.  September brings us a welcomed schedule!

Of course, we had our traditional ice cream breakfast....yummy!  Since my oldest two have a Theology class on Tuesday mornings, we had breakfast at 10.  I guess it was an ice cream brunch.

After breakfast we took our first day pictures and the kids got some new books/supplies.  We started reading Robinson Crusoe.  My son always enjoys books set on the sea, so I hope he likes this one.  It starts out with a shipwreck and being stranded alone on an island...  While we read aloud, the kids worked on an art puzzle to help see shapes as your draw.  How to Draw Real People looks promising to teach us more drawing skills

August 24, 2006 - Back to School Sale

You won't believe where I am as I write this email.  My son

started his Art class today, so I'm sitting outside working on

email.  As I write I'm looking at golden fields, farmhouses,

and tree-covered hills.  It's absolutely beautiful.  The breeze

is blowing.  I wish I could sit here all day long and finish

my novel!  I hope your day starts as beautiful as mine.

Last week was crazy with the launch of Raising Leaders,

Not Followers.  It's nice to settle back down to a routine.

Even so, thank you to everyone who supported me

through the week.  I was overwhelmed at the positive

response.  If you don't know what I'm talking about,

take a look at this blog

There are several posts from the past 2 weeks that explain

my book and the package you can claim.  If you haven't

gotten your book set, it's not too late.

http://www.CurriculumConnection.net/leaders.htm

Well, I overstocked some items for our summer

conferences and need to reduce my inventory,

especially in writing, history and science.

So what am I going to do?

Have a Back to School Sale

The items on sale are available until our supply is

gone or August 31.  Act quickly because I don't

think the supplies will last until August 31st

I'll be adding some more items this week as I have time.

August 9, 2006 - Celebrate the First Day of School

Taking a break from our Raising Leaders book promotion . . .
Here are some ways to celebrate the first day of school.

What Do You Have for Breakfast on the First Day of School?

We have ICE CREAM!!!

That's right.  I started a tradition several years ago of serving

ice cream sundaes for breakfast on the first day of homeschool .
Hey, now everyone has something to look forward to when school

starts again.  BTW, having ice cream once a year for breakfast

won't ruin your kids for life.

You can't imagine their expressions when they saw ice cream

on the breakfast table for the first time.  It was priceless!  Even

though my kids expect it now, it is still fun to see them come

to the breakfast table full of toppings and ice cream!

BACK-TO-SCHOOL TRADITIONS – CONTEST FROM 2005

 MOST ORIGINAL:

***Poems for Scavenger Hunt so kids can find their school supplies

(curriculum, new pens, rulers, etc and the last is usually candy)

Absolute favorite every year and they ask if mom will do it again.

Each poem is just a couple of lines…rhymes & corny…but we

have fun doing it!

More ideas for your Back-To-School Time:

--Ice Cream Sundae dinner the night before school starts

--Get school room (basement) all cleaned & ready for a new year –

could be thorough cleaning to surprise paint job.  Try to change

something every year even if it’s little

--New School Year Gifts – paper, pencils, etc to new math games,

typing computer programs, play-doh with a few things thrown in like

sugarless bubblegum, scented erasers and such.  Every child has

their own gift bag.

--Special meals for first day of school – something I usually don’t

serve for breakfast (cinnamon rolls), lunch (ABC soup & cookies)

and supper (blackboard shaped cake for dessert).

--First day made fun & exciting – to instill anticipation for learning,

documented by photos standing by white board with their names &

new grades posted in order to compare to previous years growth

and changes.  Everyone is treated special from toddler to middle

school student!

--Scavenger Hunt for child’s books – I don’t let them see them until

then.  When a box arrives prior to school, I try to just build the

anticipation, “ooooh-cool”, as I ppek in the bo.  When the first day

arrives, he (9yo) runs from clue to clue to clue…until he comes to

the bag full of books.  Then spread them out.  He love sthem over

for about an hour or so, and then we talk about his new privileges

and responsibilities as he’s older.  He is then putting his own

excitement to the year…Works for us!

--Bring out new school supplies I’ve stocked up on during the sales

(something I love to do)  Kids get new notebooks, pencils, pens,

erasers, pencil boxes, pouches, etc.

If you have other ways you celebrate the first day of school, leave a comment on this blog post.

July 28, 2006 - Meet the New Lifetime Books Owners

I know it's the end of the season, but still want you to know about the new Lifetime Books owners, Gus & Shirley Solis.  We met their family a few weeks ago in CHEA and enjoyed our visit.  Last night, Steve & I had the priviledge of eating dinner with them.  They are a fantastic family that you need to meet.  Besides, they carry almost every homeschool book you could imagine.

If you will be in Modesto, Ontario or Houston the next few weeks, you MUST stop by their booth and say hi.  In fact, tell them that the Becks told you to stop by and meet them.  You will also be able to see how well their young children help run their booth - checking out customers, helping customers, re-stocking books.  They are truly an entrepreneurial family.

July 12, 2006 - Amazing Response from CHEA . . . thanks!

We had a wonderful weekend at CHEA in Ontario, California last weekend.  Our thanks to everyone who came by our booth or listened to our workshops.  We were amazed at the response to our message.  Steve's room was always packed!!!  They even put a note on the door saying his room was full and the audio was available.  When I wanted to stick my head in his room to see how it was going, I had to tell them I was his wife to get in!  I was shocked to see the walls lined with people sitting on the floor.

Thanks so much to CHEA for inviting us to speak at your conference.  We look forward to a great relationship with all the homeschoolers we met last weekend.

July 4, 2006 - Freedoms in Your Homeschool

Like most of you, we will spend a relaxing day with our family in celebration of Independence Day.  This afternoon we head over to a friend’s home for burgers and fireworks.  For the past 10 years we attended the longest, continuous-running parade in Texas – Round Top’s July 4th Parade.  My children usually go home with a bag full of candy.   Since we are in Idaho, we will miss it this year.

Freedom is a precious commodity.  As homeschoolers we enjoy freedoms that others don’t have.  Freedom to choose what to study, when to study, how to learn, how long to study, and which educational experiences to have.  As you celebrate Independence Day, take a moment to celebrate the freedoms you have in raising your children with your goals, not the state’s goals.

Why tell you about your own freedoms????

Homeschoolers have freedom to educate their children and here are some helps for you!

1.  Our free report, “How To Get It All Done”, is still available when you discover the Secrets of Successful Homeschooling buy purchasing this excellent source from experienced, freedom-loving homeschoolers.  Scroll down to read my thoughts on Secrets of Successful Homeschooling.  Or, click here to reserve your copy today.  http://tossecrets.familye-biz.com/

June 13, 2006 - Montana Homeschoolers

Over Memorial Day weekend we spent a few days with some wonderful homeschoolers in Montana.  I would like to publicly thank all the people who made that conference possible.  We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many like-minded homeschoolers.

Steve truly enjoyed visiting with Dads about raising their children to rule & reign for Jesus Christ.  As always, he likes sharing ideas to encourage young entrepreneurs in fellow homeschool families.

I was most encouraged from other homeschoolers who "think outside the box", or should I say, simply "think".  When I discussed ways to educate your children off the conveyor belt, I knew I was talking to a crowd that understood.

Thanks for all your encouragement.  We look forward to spending more time in Montana

November 10, 2005 - Two Golden Hours - Part 2

Since I wrote the previous post, I started thinking about the Two Golden Hours for our kids and our homeschool.  For me, the Two Golden Hours are the first two hours my kids spend studying.

How do we spend our Two Golden Hours?

Our first hour is spent together as a family.  We read history and literature, memorize and read poetry, discuss humanities and pray.  If there is something I want to discuss with all of the kids I do it at this time.

Why do I spend our Two Golden Hours this way?
The first hour is spent on the most important thing we do...read together as a family.  If I don't read with the kids first thing, it does not get done.  AND, reading is most important to me.  Another reason we spend our first hour together is that it reinforces with my kids the idea that being together as a family is important.  So many families never spend time together, much less reading together.

What about our second Golden Hour?
The second golden hour is time for the kids to delve into their studies.  It is the time that they are freshest and should be working on the activity that requires the most thinking.

How do you spend your kids spend their Two Golden Hours?

October 17, 2005 - Public Education

I foudn this article and thought it would be good food for thought.  Tell me what you think.

If a store sells inferior products or a business gives bad service, most customers will not come back and that store or business will eventually go bankrupt. If public schools sell bad education, year after year, why don't they go bankrupt? Why aren't they shut down?

The answer is government compulsion. In private schools, if the school does a bad job educating children, parents will soon take their child out of that school. If enough parents take their kids out of the school, that school will go bankrupt. A private school depends on the voluntary consent and tuition payments of its parent-customers to stay in business.

Unlike private schools, public schools are a government-controlled education system that stays in business through naked compulsion. Local governments pass laws that give school authorities near-monopoly powers over our children's education. Compulsory-attendance laws force children to go to these schools. School taxes force parents to pay for these schools. Unlike private schools, public schools rarely go out of business, no matter how bad they are, because they get their "customers" and their money by force.

Compulsion rears its ugly head in our public schools in many other ways. State teacher licensing laws prevent excellent but unlicensed educators or outside experts from teaching in the schools. Tenure laws make it almost impossible for school boards to fire incompetent or even mediocre teachers or principals.

Local governments force children to go to public schools for six to eight hours a day, five days a week for up to twelve years, even though these children might hate public school. School authorities force children to study subjects that school authorities dictate, even though children might find these subjects boring or meaningless. Public schools also force parents to accept teachers that parents might not like or think are competent.

Many public schools force children to learn math and reading with teaching methods that can cripple children's math and reading abilities. Public schools often subject children to values or sex-education classes that parents object to. The list goes on and on.

Like tax-supported prisons, public schools don't shut down because the whole system rests on a foundation of naked force. Take away compulsory-attendance laws and compulsory school taxes and it's highly likely that most public schools would "go out of business."

But parents don't have to wait for the highly unlikely event of public schools going out of business in their lifetime. Luckily, parents in America, unlike those in Germany or many other countries, have the right to homeschool their children. Parents can also take advantage of new, low-cost education options available to them right now, such as low-cost Internet private schools. I go into detail about these new education options in my book, "Public Schools, Public Menace."
