Educating Leaders - No Conveyor Belt Education Here!

September 3, 2007 - Last Day to get Extra Free Bonus Items

Thank you to the overwhelming response to Raising Leaders, Not Followers. If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, there’s
still time before the weekly bonuses disappear tonight:
Christian Leadership for Teen & Kids

If you’re still unsure whether you should get a copy of this package for yourself, let me share a few comments I’ve received. (Remember last time I told you I’ve had lots of feedback from people who are buying the package.)

I’ve been impressed with what I’ve read so far. I have long been wanting to find the tools to mold my children into leaders themselves. They’re doing a pretty good job so far, but your suggestions are great.
Erica

****************************************

Thank you for re-releasing your leadership package this year. I read the preview copy that you sent me last year for submitting an input via email. I enjoyed it when I read it, and got a few ideas to add to what we were already doing (literature based/lifestyle of learning approach/relaxed unit studies) with our then 5 and 7 year olds. I then set my copy on the shelf to wait a few years before I read it again.

I decided to watch your webinar and listen to the call this week, just to glean some more wisdom. After checking out the bonuses, I decided to go ahead and order, because the BONUSES ALONE WERE WELL WORTH THE PACKAGE PRICE.

As I have started to go through the materials, I realize that there is DEFINITELY SOME SHIFTING I CAN DO THIS YEAR TO IMPROVE in a few areas. The Lord was already leading us to focus on some character issues, so it was very encouraging and confirming to hear you speak about the importance of a good foundation in character in the early years.

The one statement you made about the goal being “contemplation”, not “productivity” is a golden nugget for me!

So, our homeschool focus for the year is now character and contemplation.

I have too many comments to put into this short email. If you still aren’t convinced that Raising Leaders is for you, go back to this page and read the comments in the pink boxes. I just added the pink boxes this morning.
Christian Leadership for Teen & Kids

I didn’t have time to add all the comments, but those ought to give you a great idea of the response I received recently.

Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day holiday :-) I’m off for a walk and some last-minute planning for our first day of school tomorrow!.

Blessings,
Kerry Beck

ps. The 4 Weekly Bonuses disappear at midnight (eastern) tonight - Monday, Sept 3, 2007. Today is the last day to receive those bonuses, so go here right now and get your copy. Remember what Maridel said, “the bonuses alone were well worth the package price.”

August 25, 2007 - Free Surprises for Homeschool Moms

I just posted pictures of our trip to Victoria last weekend. They are on my blog Kerry Beck's blog

I’m sorry it took awhile to send this email, but my blog pictures took longer than I anticipated because I’m pretty much of a technical dummy with a digital camera :-)

Besides the concern about price, I also had some moms concerned about buying e-books. This is a great question I addressed in my blog. If you are wondering why I am selling an e-book package instead of printed books, read my August 23rd post below:

August 23, 2007 - Why is Raising Leaders an Ebook?

One concern I have heard from homeschool moms is why am I releasing these books.  Why not print them as paperbacks?

This is such an important issue that I covered it on my Start School Webinar.

If you heard my workshop on Tuesday night, you heard me address this very issue! I really want to print these in a real book format. But, there are a few drawbacks for homeschoolers if I do this.

1. Printed books take awhile to get to you…by the time we do all the prep work, send them to the printer and print. I can’t wait that long to get this information to you.

2. Printed books will be much more expensive if I print them right now. When you do a short run print of books, the cost is much higher per book (unlike books by big printing companies - Penguin Putnam, Random House, etc). The cost of your ink & paper will be much less than the total cost of printed books at this time.

3. The entire package will be much more expensive, with all the bonuses I have for your - audio workshops, transcripts of the workshops, bonus books. Making physical products is quite expensive.

4. I can send you an update without charging you for a new book.  That’s what is happening tomorrow.  Everyone who has already bought Raising Leaders, Not Followers will receive the updated editions.  It’s a win-win situation.

I want to be fair with your pocketbook. I know it is expensive to raise children and educate them at home. I truly believe the value of this Leadership Package will far outweigh the price.

One Tip
: When I print ebooks, it takes very little of my time. I put the paper in the printer. I find the file on my computer and tell it to print. I walk away and do something with my children. When I return, voila, the book is printed. Only a few minutes used. When my husband reads aloud to our family, I hole-punch those pages and put them in a binder. (Or one of my children volunteer to hole-punch)

Multi-Tasking is wonderful because my time is very valuable, too!!!

Thanks for bringing up this issue.

August 16, 2007 - Start School Right This Year

Summer is coming to a close and most families are getting ready for school to start.  Our family is taking one last weekend trip before my son’s football practice starts on Monday.  We are headed to Seattle to pick up my daughter who has been working at a Christian camp since the first of July.

Then we are headed for a stop at the Olympic Rainforest and over to Victoria, British Columbia.  I still remember my parents taking us to Victoria for a few days.  On the way home, we’ll take in a Seattle Mariners’ baseball game.

Once we get home, I’ll start cleaning my school desk…what a job!  We homeschool from Labor Day to Memorial Day, so I have a few weeks to get ready.

I know many of you start much sooner, so I want to give you a couple of tips to start the school year right.

1.  Do something FUN on the first day of school.  Many of you know we have ice cream for breakfast on the first day of school each year.  For all you health nuts (including myself…I even grind my own flax seeds now), one meal of ice cream isn’t going to hurt anyone.  AND…it will make an unforgettable memory with your children.  What are you doing for fun?

2.  Consider your style of homeschooling.  Are you following the traditional model of the public schools that simply gives your children an education designed for the poor?  Does your approach prepare your kids how to think for themselves Biblically?

What in the world am I talking about?  I’ve explained it in a short Report I prepared especially for you.  Right now, you can get the report. All you have to do is go here:
Leadership Education Curriculum

NEXT, I’d like you to join me for my first webinar that will be an hour of ideas to help you get ready for the school year with the BEST way to educate your children.  You can get the details here:
Leadership Education Curriculum

Oh yeah…I almost forgot!  My Start School Right webinar is next Tuesday, August 21st
6pm Pacific
7pm Mountain
8pm Central
9pm Eastern

See you then!

Blessings,
Kerry

August 13, 2007 - Example of Leadership Development Plan

Looking for a Leadership Development Plan is a worthy cause because there are so few leaders today. As we look at the younger generation, it is difficult to find the leaders of tomorrow. Today’s schools prepare our young people to follow: to follow their teacher, to follow their employer and to follow their leader. Following isn’t a bad thing, unless everyone becomes followers.

As you look at today’s school, it is easy to discover they are not preparing your children to think and lead. Multiple choice and true-false tests only give students an opportunity to tell back to the teacher what the teacher is thinking. More time is spent in our public & private schools to send students down the conveyor belt of education, requiring each student to do the same as the “generic” student. This does not train your children to think for themselves, but to learn specific facts and data.

The school systems do not provide opportunity for thinking and discussion which is absolutely necessary for future leaders. You must change our view of schools and education so we actually train your children to become strong leaders who make positive changes in our society.

To develop leaders, you must start at the beginning. Let me give you 3 steps of a leadership development plan

Step 1 - Character Building
A strong leader must be strong in character. Thus, you must begin your leadership development plan with character building. Character qualities such as integrity, work ethic, perseverance, courage and honesty should be established as quickly as possible. When you establish perseverance and courage in a young person, he is ready to become a leader who can weather the trials ahead. Instill strong character in a young person and you will prepare them for leadership as an adult.

Step 2 - Develop a Love of Learning
It has been said by many leadership coaches to lead you must read. Reading and learning are a natural part of every leaders’ life. For many teachers and home educators, this may be a new concept. It is more important to develop a love of learning than to pass the next standardized test. Standardized tests usually develop a “hate of learning”.

Your students should love learning and you can help by changing your approach to teaching. Spend time reading really cool books that draw your students into the lessons of the story. Treasure Island, Anne of Green Gables and Call of the Wild are some of our favorites over the years. Use games to teach concepts instead of worksheets. Take time to explain the “reason why” a child is learning a concept. When given a reason why, children are much more excited about what they are learning.

Henry Doherty said it best, “Get over the idea that only children should spend their time in study. Be a student so long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life.”

Most of all, you need to be an example. When you love learning, your students will follow your example. It’s that simple.

Step 3 - Mentoring
To become well-rounded adults who are able to lead, mentoring is the best option. Mentoring should occur in two arenas: academic & real life. With academics a mentor should take their students through a process that teaches them to learn independently.

The best way to learn independently is to read, write and discuss. Students and mentors choose a book to read. Each day they keep a reading journal about what was read. On a regular basis, mentors lead a discussion about the book they are reading. Students use their notes or reading journals to guide them in their discussion. Open-ended, Socratic discussions develop deep critical thinking skills in students. The ability to think through lessons in books prepares students to think through problems as leaders.

Real life mentoring is also important as you raise leaders. During the teenage years, students should seek out opportunities to work with a mentor in the field of their choice. By doing so, they will learn invaluable skills in their area of interest and be more prepared for the future.

In summary, it is vital to develop strong character in children as they prepare to lead those around them. Equally important is continuous learning. A love of learning should be established early. Independent learning should continue through the teenage years.

Cicero stated it well. “Read at every wait; read at all hours; read within leisure; read in times of labor; read as one goes in; read as one goes out.” The task of the educated mind is, simply put: READ TO LEAD”

November 16, 2006 - Love Life or Lose It

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in the world will keep it for eternal life.
If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also.  if anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
                                                          John 12:25-27

October 24, 2006 - Look At the Controversy My Book Caused!

My book caused quite a stir last week.  I had one mom say
she doesn't see a Biblical reason to raise our children to be
leaders.   We should only be teaching our children to serve,
rather than lead.  Another comment about Raising Leaders, Not
Followers said it was "PR tool that mothers will gobble up
without thinking it through".

I thought you might like to read parts of my response.  If you
don't know what book I'm talking about, you can read about it at
http://www.Raising-Leaders.com

--------------------------------------------------

Yes, the author of Raising Leaders, Not Followers is on this
list.  I finally had time this morning to read all the posts and
compose my own.

To start off, I conducted a survey before I wrote Raising
Leaders, Not Followers to see if there was a need for a Biblical
Perspective of Leadership Education (my sub-title).  Almost 300
people responded to the survey.  I discovered the greatest need
for helps in Leadership Education (over 90%) was practical
applications.  I also discovered many other concerns, as well as
a great desire for Moms to get more help.  I spend much time
offering specific ways to implement Leadership Education.  In
fact the third book in the series is entirely tips & stories to
hop off the conveyor belt.   So, the book is NOT a "PR tool that
mothers will gobble up without thinking it through".  It is the
result of asking other homeschool moms what they need, doing the
research and compiling it.

....... Homeschoolers who believe we should only center on
training our children to serve have a different definition of
leadership than mine.  We may have to agree to disagree on the
definition.  I don’t see leadership as only public leadership,
although I think that is an important aspect.  Being a leader is
not just leading a church group, Bible study or support group.
Leadership is much broader as I read the Bible.

Personally, I think this week’s discussion is more an issue of
semantics and being literalists, a result of modernity.
Regardless, here are some reasons I raise my children to be
leaders.  These are in no particular order.

God calls all husbands to be leaders of their home (Eph 5:23).
Probably 95% of our sons will be married one day.  Why not train
them for their future?

Mothers must lead their children well, even though fathers are
ultimately responsible.  Like Moses who delegated to leaders (Ex
18:21-23), husbands often delegate much of child-rearing to their
wives.  Again, most of our daughters will be moms.  That’s
normative in the Bible.  Daughters grow up to be wives & mothers.
It is the exception to be a single woman.  I raise my children
for the normative in the Bible, not the exception.

Moses provides an interesting view of leadership.  There are
tiers of leadership.  One man can’t do it all.  These judges are
called to make judgments.  What better way to prepare our
children for the future than to teach them how to make wise
decisions.  The best way I know how to teach wise decision making
is using concepts in leadership education.  Giving repeated
opportunities to ask the right questions is an essential element
in LE.  When children must answer questions, they must "think"
about the answers.  This is excellent preparation for adult life
and leading those around them.  They are following Moses’
example.

The Great Commission (Mt 28:18-20) tells us to go and make
disciples.  Who else will go and make disciples, but a leader?
When I disciple a young mom, I am "leading" her in the Scriptures
and encouraging her to "think" how to apply the Scriptures.

Titus 2:4-5 exhorts older women to lead younger women in
godliness.  The older woman is leading the younger women.  Or, at
least this is what should be happening.  Unfortunately, I don’t
see it happening very much in Christian churches.  Most women are
just too busy to obey this command.

Timothy tells us that aspiring to the office of elder is a good
thing (I Timothy 3:1).  This tells me that it is a good thing to
encourage our children to be leaders.  God sees it as good for
our sons to aspire to lead the church.

Psalm 112 describes a man who is full of Godly character and is a
leader to those around him.  The final verse says "the wicked
will see it and be grieved; he will gnash his teeth and melt
away; the desire of the wicked shall perish".  Because of this
man’s righteousness he influences those around him (which means
he is a leader) and conquers the wicked.

BTW, all of these examples include many hours of service.

If you had read my book, you would discover that the foundation
for leadership education is not the classics, but Building Godly
Character.  Humility and service are the foundation of leadership
education.  I continue to discuss the areas that this board
spends much time discussing (love of learning and mentoring with
classics).  One thing that TJEd and it’s followers don’t seem to
discuss is laying a foundation of Godly Character.

One of my greatest desires for my children is that they are more
Christ-like.  If you have the same desire, then you desire your
children to be a Servant-Leader.  This desire involves much time
raising my children in Godly character.

. . . . If you read my website, you will discover the reason I
wrote Raising Leaders, Not Followers
http://www.Raising-Leaders.com is to provide help for Christian
families by offering a Biblical worldview of Leadership
Education.  I speak at many homeschool conferences and hear
homeschoolers objections to TJEd.  Two concerns they have with
TJEd is the need for practical applications and the lack of
Biblical worldview.

As a side note, I don’t mind anyone discussing my book without
reading it.  Actually, I think it’s pretty cool that it would
stir up so much discussion.

FWIW, when I have a concern about a book being wrong, I buy the
book and review it.  When I heard all the hubbub several years
ago about Harry Potter, I didn’t listen to all the talk about it
on the internet.  I marched myself down to Hastings, bought my
own copy, and read it. Was it a waste of money?  No – even though
I’m not really into that genre.  I could then form my own
opinion, not based on the title or others’ opinions.

. . . . I don’t say this to make a sale.  But, if you are
concerned about a specific book and want to discuss it, I suggest
you discuss it in an informed manner.

I appreciate your concern and plan to turn my comments into a
supplement to the book.  Everyone that already bought the book
will receive the supplement, too!  Thanks for letting my readers
receive more Biblical thoughts about raising Godly Leaders.

Blessings,
Kerry Beck

October 17, 2006 - Ten Practical Ways to Grow a Servant's Heart

This past weekend I picked apples for the second time in my life.
If you recall last year at this time, I told you about our apple-
picking experience.  We picked 51 pounds last year, so I scaled
back a bit this year - only 27 pounds.

Actually, I want to take my kiddos this weekend since they missed
all the fun.  The farm where we picked apples also has apple
cider presses.  We can press our own apple cider-yum, yum!
------------------------------------------------------------
There is a bit of irony in the article I'm sending today.  I was
looking through 2 of my favorite resources for a few
practical ways for my children to grow in
Biblical Womanhood & Manhood.   I
turned to a
section in Polished Cornerstones that we haven't

done, yet.  (I mark the year we do each section in Polished
Cornerstones - '98, '99 ...)  As I perused the chapter on
Respectful Woman, I moved on into Supportive Woman.  I made
several notes.

Then I found a similar section in Plants Grown Up.  It was all
about Service. These titles and activites intrigued me because
the last few weeks God has been placing on my
heart the importance to serve others

inside and outside our church.  I need to lead my children
by example, involving them in service...like I did when they were

younger.

The past two years I became more involved in our business.
I want my children to see the importance of hard work.  But, I
also want them to know the purpose of hard work is to free up our
time so we can serve our Lord by serving others!

--------------------------------------------
So, why am I telling you about Supportive Women, Service for Young Men and Serving Others?
-------------------------------------------

One of the most important aspects of being a leader is your
ability to serve.  You may think servant and leader are
opposites, but that is not true.  Let's look at Christ's words
about leaders and servants.

The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those
who exercise authority over them are called benefactors.  But not
so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let
him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.

For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves?
Is it not he  who sits at the table?  Yet I am among you as the
One who serves.
                                       Luke 22:25-27

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,
and to give His life a ransom for many.
                                        Matthew 20:28

As you raise your children to lead, you must continue to
give them opportunities to serve the Lord by serving others.
Since you homeschool, you have the freedom to serve others in
your homeschool.  Take a look at a few ideas you can use today.

TEN PRACTICAL WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILDREN GROW A SERVANT'S HEART

These service suggestions start at home, move to those in your

church and eventually to unbelievers around you.  Several of
these ideas can be used in a traditional academic setting.  Turn
your child's reading or writing into an experience about Serving
with a Cheerful Heart.

1.  List practical ways you can help your mom or dad's projects,
interests or goals for the family.  Put these ideas into action.

2.  Serve one of your siblings for a day.  When you are finished,
make a list of other ways you can serve your siblings.  Keep the
list close by so you can put those ideas into action.

3.  Write your own paraphrase of Philippians 2:3-11.

4.  Devote a day to serve your father/mother in any way you can.

5.  Read the gospel of Mark.  List all the ways Jesus served
those around him.  Next to each service, write what you can learn
from His actions.

6.  Offer to help another family for a day (or regularly).
    Elderly couple or widow/widower
Family with disabled member (parent or child)
    Family with young children

7.  Study the lives of men and women in the Bible who cheerfully
served others.  Write down their names and what they did.  Then,
make a list of the ways you can learn from their examples.

8.  Find a place you can serve in your church.

9.  Learn to perform menial tasks in your home:  quickly,
cheerfully, and completely.

10.  Babysit (without charge) for a young couple so they can go
out on a date.

(adapted from Polished Cornerstones and Plants Grown Up)

Remember: Service isn't just the actions, but the attitude, as
well.  As you involve your children in serving others, talk to
them about their attitude and their desire to serve.  When your
children are grown and naturally want to help you around the
house, you can be assured they have developed a servant's
mindset.

Take a minute and make your own list.  Be sure to add them to
your calendar, so you don't forget.

October 11, 2006 - What Type of Leader Will Your Child Be?

Let them alone.  They are blind leaders of the blind.  And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.

   Matthew 15:13-14

...beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Then they understood that He did not ell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
   Matthew 17:11

Will your children be wise, godly leaders?  Or blind leaders who end up in the ditch?

Will your children offer leaven in their leading?  Or wisdom to their followers?

We must prepare our children by using Scripture as our grid.  Then, our children will be leaders for Christ, ruling well.

October 11, 2006 - Few Laborers (or Leaders)

The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

   Matthew 9:37-38

I am praying that my children are leaders and laborers for  Jesus Christ.  Are you?

It is taking much longer than I expected to get my Raising Leaders Team set up.  The structure of the secure website, itself is more involved than I thought.  Thank goodness for my wonderful husband who set this up for me.

I hope to get the content on to the website over the next few days.  Then it should be ready for my members next week.

So sorry for the delay.  If you bought the Raising Leaders package, you can still get your first month for $1.  Check your download page for details.

August 18, 2006 - Good News & Bad News

A couple of pieces of news – and this is the classic “good news, bad news” routine.

First the Bad News…the bonus I added on Wednesday, Using the Lost Tools of Writing MP3 & Transcript, is only available until Sunday, August 20th (midnight PDT).  That gives you less than 3 days to buy Raising Leaders, Not Followers and receive all my bonus material.

Lost Tools is an excellent source to give your children real writing tools.  Also, I share tips for mom as she teaches writing.  Use them this week!

So if you want to secure the package with the bonus, you need to act very soon.  You can get it at this link:

www.CurriculumConnection.net/leaders.htm

Now for the GOOD news…

If you have been following along, you know the price for Raising Leaders has increased by $5 each day.  Our letter stated we were raising the price until it reached $47.  Steve & I discussed the price thoroughly and decided to change our top price.  For the time being, our highest price will be $37.  I know you can’t believe it when you discover all the bonuses you receive when you buy Raising Leaders Book Set.

Now, I can’t promise the price will stay at $37 forever.  I still think $47 is a great price for this book set since the three books retail for $60.  Plus, you get $100 in bonus product when you buy this week!  But for now, you only pay $37 for  everything.

Finally, I’ve had lots of feedback from people who are buying the package.  I would like to tell you about some of the, but I don’t want this to get overly long – so I am going to hold off until tomorrow…

Reserve your copy today at this link:

www.CurriculumConnection.net/leaders.htm

Blessings,

Kerry Beck

….who can’t wait to tell you about her new book – a must for any parent!
