Good bye to a dear friend
In about 30 minutes, our church is saying good bye to one of the most wonderful Christian man we know.  Byron Moore passed away on Wednesday.  He was such a dear man and very special to us all.  We will not be attending his funeral this afternoon.  Anthony has to work and I don't think I could handle it emotionally.  I have done to well these past couple of days so I don't want to break down at the funeral too.  I will just stay here and remember him and say good bye in my own way.  Here is his obtiuary:



On August 6, 2008, Byron Moore celebrated his first day in heaven. Byron passed away at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, OK. He was born in Moore’s Creek, KY to Leonard and Maymie Ellen (Jody) Moore on November 7, 1931. He lived in McKee, KY until he enlisted in the Air Force. Byron came to Oklahoma when he was assigned to Ardmore Air Force Base in 1954. During that time, he met the love of his life, Sandra Lea Wiggin. They were married on April 21, 1956 and he was an “Okie” for life. Byron attended Central State Teachers College, Edmond (now UCO) where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. His first teaching assignment was at Oklahoma State Training school in Helena, OK. He next taught at Ponca Military Academy from 1960 to1974 when the school closed. Known as Captain Moore, he was highly respected and loved by his students, both as a teacher and coach. After PMA closed, Byron began working as a Lab Technician at Continental Carbon Black. He retired from the company after working there for 17 years.

Byron’s life was blessed with 3 children, Debra Renee, Diana Kaye, and Charles Byron. He enjoyed his children, but he also loved to serve the Lord. In his teens, Byron accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior. He and his family began attending Central Baptist Church in 1965 and Byron continued to serve until he was able to meet the Lord. He was a trustee of the church and later was elected as a deacon. He continued to teach the youth by attending youth functions and church camp as a counselor each summer for junior and senior camp. He was happy to share his testimony of faith with anyone who would listen. Byron also enjoyed playing and umpiring slow pitch softball. He played softball with the senior league in Stillwater. He remained active until his death.

Byron is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra, his daughter, Debra Conner, her husband, William, and their children, Tim and Megan, his daughter, Diana Brewer, her husband, Denny, and their children, Jordan, Jared, and Jennae, and his son, Charles Byron, his wife, Pamela, and their children, Alec, Brieana, and Chase. He is also survived by 2 nephews, Larry and Keith Gabbard.

Byron is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Maymie Moore, his sister, Nell Gabbard, and his grandson, William Tyler Conner.

The service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Northeast Baptist Church with Pastor John Waterloo, minister of Central Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will then follow at Longwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Casketbearers will be the deacons of Central Baptist Church, Andy Biddinger, Robin Richardson, Sam Blackstar, Joel Garza, Steve Patrick, and Mark Byard

Honorary casketbearers will be alumni cadets from Ponca Military Academy. Memorial contributions can be sent in lieu of flowers to Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 611 E. Hartford, Ponca City, OK 74601 or Ponca Military Academy Trust Fund, c/o Hugh Bagley, 101 E. Snowmass, Yukon, OK 73099.

A wonderful memory

I was going through some papers and came across some sermon notes. This is a message from one of the greatest Southern Baptist preachers that ever lived. Of course I may be just a little bit biased on that opinion as the man was my grandfather, Sherman Wells. This was the final sermon that he gave before his death in October, 2001. The date on the message notes is 4/9/2000. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did when we heard in person!!



The Gospel of Christ

Romans 1:14-18


The gospel of Christ was not always revered as the beautiful message of God.

To the world, to see a man hang on a cross, was to see a criminal a lame broken man paying for a crime he had committed. Usually, among many crimes, they were guilty of murder.

It was unheard of to see an innocent person crucified. It was no different with Jesus Christ. The prophet Isaiah said he was numbered with the transgressions Isaiah 53:12. No, it was not always considered an honor to be identified with Jesus Christ, in the eyes of the world. And we may be moving back to that now, by the world.

For the world does question the truth of the message of the Bible. Jesus Christ may be a Son of God, bot the only begotten Son of God? The sinless Saviour? The only way to God? The only way into the kingdom of God? These cardinal doctrines of the word of God, are seriously being questioned by the world and many religious leaders of the world.

Sin? What is that? Hell? Never heard of it? It will become more and more difficult to convince men that the Bible is true. Many of these people are already in our churches today; and some are in the pulpits of our churches.

Paul was keenly aware of that in his time. Oh Rome had her skeptics, her intellects, who questioned the message of Christ.

So, Paul, said, I am ready to preach at Rome, also, I owe you that. But while some were ashamed to be identified with Christ, Paul said, I am not, I gladly stand at the foot of his cross.

Obviously he filled in a bit more but you can get the idea. This is one man that we had a great loss on when he died but heaven had a mighty great gain. I miss him still to this day and will love him always. I look forward to the day when I can meet him at the river Jordan and be reunited with him for always.

Staying the course despite the odds

I'm still doing Josephines challange that I wrote about yesterday.  So, I was listening to the radio this morning and heard a song by Shania Twain that described our marriage almost perfectly.  The song is Still the One.  It talks about how this couple married despite everyone saying it would never last.  And how much they would have missed if they had actually listened to them.  And that describes us.  When we first started talking marriage I was 17 and Anthony was 19.  My entire family, all my friends said we would never make it and we would divorce before the first year was up.  Then when we made that one it was the 2nd, then the 3rd, then by the 5th year and finally they said by the 10th year anniversary we would be divorced.  Other than one incident, we have been together ever since and just as happy as can be.  When we made the 10 year anniversary the comment had pretty much ceased.  I guess they all realized that we were together for the long haul.  And like the song, there's so much we would have missed.  Yes we would have missed all the heartache and the pain, but we would have missed so much more than that.  We would have missed all the love and fun and the knowledge that we can stand strong against all odds.  That we are meant to be together.  We would have missed 12 years of children, and joy from watching them grow up.  We would have missed watching each other grow in the Lord.  We would never have known that we can do anything together.So without more comments here are the lyrics to the song that describes us so much!

What my husband means to me

Josephine, over at The Home of the Dixie Cajun, has issued a challange to all of us wives.  Josephine lost her husband, Elgin, on Mothers Day of this year.  I did not know of her before this time, but I can say without a doubt that they were one of best couples.  You can read her joy in their lives and the pain she feels since his death.  She issued a challange that we as wives would share what our husbands mean to us.  So this is what I'm doing on this post.  I do this in honor of all fathers everywhere, but most importantly our heavenly Father.

My husband, Anthony, is the best there is.  I know the rest of you will say that you had the best but I know it's not true. We have been married for 12 years and have 4 kids.  We are much happier now than we were back then.  We have had our ups and downs like most couples.  One time we almost seperated.  Things were worked out and we are the happiest couple you could see.  If I could go back and re marry him, I'd do it in a heartbeat.  I get aggrevated at him when he comes in from work tracking dirt and throwing his stuff all over.  I get frustrated having to wash all those yucky oil field clothes each night just so he doesn't have to.  I hate having to eat what he wants all time.  But you know what, I would not change any of that for the world because in the long run none of it matters.  I love that he goes out to work each and every day to provide a wonderful life the the kids and I.  I love that we don't have to worry about food to eat, or where we are going to live at.  He loves the 5 of us with all he has.  We come 2nd only to God.  He would give up anything and everything just for us.  And there are times that he has done without just so we can have things.  He takes such great care of us. He's my best friend, my confidante, and my lover.  He loves everything about me. Even though I'm 100 lbs over weight he never says a word about it.   He is active in our church as an usher and he drives the bus for the bus kids.  He loves them kids like they were ours.  Anthony is light of my life.  I wouldn't want him to change for anything.  Anthony is as close to a redneck as you can possible get and I love him for it!!  I'm looking forward to many, many more years with him.  I look forward to graduating our kids from high school and college.  I look forward to him walking our 2 daughters down the aisle at their weddings.  I look forward to being by his side when our our 2 sons get married.  I look forward to being there with him to spoil our grandchildren and our great grandchildren.  I look forward to a whole lifetime of fun and memories with my husband. 

After the loss of my mother, it really made me realize that none of us are promised tomorrow.  I have not let him or the kids leave without getting a kiss and an I love you.  I end each conversation with I love you.  We end each night with I love you.  Anthony and I talk on the phone at least 4 times a day while he's working.  I thank God for my wonderful hubby.  Like Josephine says, treasure them and love them like there's no tomorrow becuase you never know when it will be the last time you see them.  And that goes not only for our husbands but our entire family and friends.

Friendship contest!

Charity at Faith Hope and Charity is hosting a contest for her one year blog anniversary.  We are to write about our friend we have had the longest and let people know all about this contest.  So to find out more about it, click on the title of her blog and you can see the details.  Now for my entry.  I made a mistake on the idea of the contest.  I thought it was about the best friend not the longest.  And since most of my friends have been my friends for about the same amount of time, it really doesn't change my entry. 

This is actually a hard one for me to decide upon because there are so many people I could consider to be my best friend.  Dori has been a great friend for the last 4 years.  I trust her completely with my kids and we swap babysitting frequently.  Her oldest son and my oldest daughter will be getting married in about 20 years. lol  Then there's my sisters.  I grew up with Lisa and we have always been pretty close.  That's not to say that we haven't had our problems because we have.  Our kids are all very close in age.  Then there is Sarah and Illiene.  They are my newest sisters as of 2 years ago when their mom married my dad.  We have become close in those two years.  Then there's my brother Doug.  We also grew up together but weren't that close growing up.  We became very close when our mom died 3 years ago.  I keep his daughter and soon his son as well.  As close as I am to all of these people, there is one person that I'm even closer to.  My husband Anthony is my very best friend.  We have known each other since I was 6 and he was 8 so it's been many years!!!  We lost contact back then but re met when I was 16.  For him it was love at first sight, but for me I couldn't stand him then!!!  It didn't take long for him to change my mind.  We have been together for 13 years and have been the best of friends for that whole time.  Anthony is theret to pick me up when I 'm down and knock me out of the clouds when I get carried away.  He laughs and cries with me.  He was there for the birth of all four of our kids.  We have had bad times but they have been few and far between.  There is no one else I would consider to be my best friend and my soul mate.  I look forward to many many more years together not only as husband and wife but best friends as well.

Scientists of Faith book review

This was a wonderful book!!!  My hubby and I both enjoyed reading about the different Christian scientists for a change.  This book was above my kids' interest level but would be good for an older teen to read.  My oldest child is 11.  I would reccommend this book to anyone who was studying science in depth or if they just wanted an educational imformative book to read.  This is not one to read with other distractions around though!!!!

MS awareness

A great article!!

Introducing Dominick Douglas!!
 
Dad, Karmyn and I just got home from Little Rock!!  Dominick is doing so well!!!  The spot on his back is smaller than a dime, it's very tiny!!  He was born yesterday, 02/20/2008, at approximately 10:15 AM.  He weighed 8 lbs. 9.5 oz. and just over 19 inches long!! He is the most adorable little guy!!  I got to spend about 45 minutes in the NICU with him.  His surgery to close his back will be tomorrow morning at 930 AM and will take about 3 hours.  Things are so much better than we thought!!!  Besides the spot being so tiny, he is pushing for his bowel movements and urinating which means no catheter!!!!!  And he is using his legs and pushing himself to the head of his bed constantly so that means that he is able to use his legs and will be able to walk!!!  God is so good!!  He answered our prayers so much more than we were even really hoping for!!  Of course we know that God can completely cure this but we never expected news this grand!!!  I'm not sure that they will actually do a Latex allergy test on him but they are treating him as if he were since something like 90% of spina bifida babies are allergic to latex!  Anyway here are a couple of pictures of him and Karmyn!  Sarah will be getting out of the hospital this evening.  For those that do not know he has spina bifida!  We are so proud of this little guy!!

Across the Wide River book Review

This is my first book review and I must apologize becuase it was due on the 11th.  My computer was in the shop for the past month and I had no way of getting it done.  So I'm offering my most sincere apology for that!  Now for the review!

Across the Wide River by Stephanie Reed

This book is about a young man named Lowry Rankin whose family is part of the underground railroad.  As the story starts, Lowry's best friend- a slave- is beaten.  Lowry's family then moves away.  He begins to help his family get the slaves to Canada where they will be free.  Lowry doesn't speak out against slavery but he is against it.  As the story goes on, he helps many of the slaves to escape to freedom at the risk of his own life.  Lowry is a shy young man.  When it comes right down to it, will he be able to speak his mind about slavery?  Or will he fade into the woodwork?

This is an excellent book to read aloud to your children.  My kids are ages 4, 6, 8 and 11 and enjoyed the book.  It made for some great discussion times with them about slavery and how we should treat others.  We also were able to discuss standing up for what we believe in.

Ok, tonight my 4 year old daughter, yes again!, made another really cute comment!!  I made steaks for supper tonight for hubby since he's had a rough day at work.  Anyway, he just walked in and she says " Daddy!!!  Mommy made mistakes for supper tonight!!!"

Should a Christian Observe Christmas?

Should a Christian Observe Christmas?

“One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

“He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.”—Rom. 14:5,6.

I love the Christmas season. I find great joy in preaching on the Christmas themes of the angels, the shepherds, the manger, the virgin birth, and the wise men. I get a great thrill when I hear Christmas carols. I love the gathering together of loved ones, the giving of gifts. And I rejoice to be remembered by those I love.

Perhaps my own feeling is colored by the fact that for many years I have been away from home most of the year, but at the Christmas season I can be with my family.

How sad that many do not enjoy Christmas! Even some devoted Christians feel sour and are cantankerous and full of objections about the season. To you I would say in the words of Scripture—if you regard the day, regard it unto the Lord. And if you do not regard the day, then be sure you act Christian about it. Let nobody judge or criticize others for an honest, worshipful, spiritual and loving attitude about Christmas.

SOME OBJECTIONS ABOUT CHRISTMAS ANSWERED

1. “December 25 Is Not Really Christ’s Birthday”

The Bible does not tell us exactly when Christ was born, and there are no other trustworthy sources from which we can learn the time. Therefore, some think it wrong to observe Christmas.

I know a little girl who was born on February 29—leap year. Now, is it wrong for her to observe her birthday on February 28 when there is no leap year? In other words, is it wrong for her or others to observe her birthday anytime except leap year? The precise date—February 29—is not the important factor, but that another year has gone by and the little girl has grown a year older; and that fact should be recognized by loved ones.

Would you say it is wrong to observe Thanksgiving on a certain Thursday in November since not all our blessings have come on that day? Or would it be wrong to set a more convenient day if all agreed on a national day of thanksgiving? Whatever the day, it is still right to have a time when we publicly thank God and as a nation officially express our gratitude to the Father of Mercies for all His bounty, for all His goodness and for all His blessings. The important thing is not the day of the calendar on which we do it, but the fact that we give praise to the One who loadeth us with benefits.

Although many scholars do not believe that Jesus was born on December 25, it could still be the date on which the angels announced His birth. We love the dear Lord Jesus. We want everyone to remember His birth. We want to teach our children about the Babe in the manger, about the wise men from the East who came to worship Him, about the angel’s announcement to Mary, about the angel chorus that told the shepherds of His birth. And December 25 is as good a day for that as any other day. It is not wrong to remember the birth of Christ on a day which is as close as we can come to His birthday.

2. “Christmas Means Only ‘Christ’s Mass’—a Catholic Holiday”

We are told that the name of Christmas comes from “Christ’s Mass,” that it was instituted by Catholics and therefore good Protestants ought not to observe it.

That objection seems a little foolish. Nearly all the names we have, we inherited from the heathen. Many cities, towns, counties and rivers in America have Indian names. But when we see the Susquehanna River or read of Shawnee, Oklahoma or Comanche, Texas, we are not thinking about the Indians. And the names have no connotation of heathendom. Names mean what they mean, no matter what the origin.

Sometimes Seventh-day Adventists make much of the fact that the name of our day “Sunday” comes from the worship of the sun. I reply that their “Saturday” is named from the god Saturn. But no one has reference to the sun when he uses the word “Sunday” or when he worships on Sunday; and no one has any reference to the god Saturn when he works or serves on Saturday.

So it seems foolish to make an artificial distinction when none exists in the minds of people who observe Christmas.

January was named for the Roman god Janus. Are Christians, therefore, wrong to call the month by that name? To every sensible person, Christmas means simply Christmas, not some kind of mass. Catholics may observe it with a mass, but Protestants do not.

It will be good to keep these things in mind.

3. “Christmas Was a Former Heathen Holiday”

It is true that before the birth of Christ, December 25 was a pagan holiday. The Encyclopedia Brittanica says this date was a “Mithraic feast day” to celebrate the unconquered Son of Philocalus.

Evidently many new converts were tempted to keep the pagan feast celebrated on December 25. Possibly it was to counteract this pagan influence that Christian leaders decided to observe this day as “Christmas”, which means “Christ-sent,” hoping this would help new converts resist the temptation of partaking in the pagan feast. (Following the same reasoning, many churches have a special banquet and program for high school seniors on the night of the annual senior prom.)

At any rate, the celebration of Christmas is definitely not a continuation of a pagan custom. It is a unique Christian holiday to counteract the influence of a pagan holiday. Pagans did something on every day, and we cannot do away with all the days they used, whether for worship or for ceremonies about sowing or reaping or about the solstices or the new moons. We have the same sun heathens worshiped, and we benefit from its rising and setting, but we do not have the heathen ceremonies about that.

In 1936, I held a blessed revival campaign in the Binghamton Theatre in Binghamton, New York, sponsored by eight churches. The fact that in this theatre people had seen lewd movies or burlesque shows or legitimate theatre productions did not change the fact that now the building was used for the glory of God and souls were saved.

I myself am under new management too. Once the Devil lived within; now Jesus Christ does. So if heathens used December 25 for idolatry, why should Christians not use it now to honor Jesus Christ and His birth? Whatever day we set aside to honor Christ, it will be a day somebody else has used for bad purposes.

But now all the days belong to Christ and none to heathen gods. No Christian should be grieved if we think about the birth of Christ on December 25. Is that a worse sin than working to make money on that day? Why should anybody object if we sing Christmas carols, have a happy celebration with a feast and go over the Bible story of His birth and teach it to our children on Christmas Day? We would not honor God more by having less Scripture, less singing, less of the spirit of giving and less manifestation of love for others. All the days belong to Christ, and December 25 should be used to honor Him too.

4. “Christmas Trees and Decorations Are an Abomination”

Many people believe Jeremiah 10:1–4 is talking about Christmas trees and that therefore it is a sin to put one up. Notice verses 3 and 4:

“For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

“They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.”

This is a description of an idol made of wood and covered with silver and gold. Notice that God tells Israel not to be afraid of these idols because “they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good” (vs. 5).

As a matter of fact, the Christmas tree has a distinctive Christian origin. In the eighth century an English missionary named Boniface went to Germany to preach Christ. The Germans, at that time, were heathen and worshiped idols. One of their objects of worship was the oak tree. But Boniface told them God was more like the evergreen tree which did not lose its leaves and appear to be dead in the winter.

So gradually, as people were converted to Christ, the evergreen tree became a symbol of the eternal God in whom they had learned to trust. Eventually the evergreen tree was used for decoration at the Christmas feast. Because God had shown His love to us through the gift of His Son, it became customary for Christians to give gifts to those whom they loved at Christmastime.

The decorations on a Christmas tree could not possibly be called heathen nor have any idolatrous significance. Who thinks that heathens worshiped their gods with paper chains? that popcorn on a string is a form of idolatry? that electric lights on it for the joy of little children to brighten the home are sinful?

I love Christmas and its decorations, which are but an expression of joy in my heart as I think how God became man, how the Creator became a Babe, how “though he was rich, yet for [our] sakes he became poor, that [we] through his poverty might be rich” (II Cor. 8:9).

It is sad that the world as a whole does leave Christ out of Christmas. But for those of us who love the Lord, it can be a blessed time of fun and feasting and fellowship.

5. “There Is Too Much Revelry During the Christmas Holidays”

It is true that many do not honor Jesus Christ at Christmas. Some drink more liquor during Christmastime than at any other time. That is a sin. Many business people think of Christmas only as a time to make money. In this they are wrong. Sometimes even Christians lie about Santa Claus and deceive little children with a heathen legend when they could tell about the dear Lord Jesus. That is wicked. Deceit is the poorest possible way to honor the birth of our Lord.

I do not believe in having a Santa Claus at Sunday school or in the church service. Certainly to deceive little ones with a lie is a sin. No Christian ought to condone it. The truth is so much better than a lie. We should tell them how the dear Lord came into the world to save sinners.

Yes, people often dishonor God at Christmas. I am sorry they do. I hope you will not grieve God by such a sin.

But we should not turn Christmas over to Satan and wicked people because some misuse the Christmas season.

Should we abandon Sunday because it is often misused?

On the Lord’s Day there is more drinking, more revelry, than on any other day of the week. Should Christians, therefore, count the Lord’s Day the Devil’s day and give it up? Certainly not.

A great many teach that baptism is essential to salvation. They give more honor to the water than to the blood. That is wrong. But should we, therefore, disobey Jesus Christ about baptism because some others have overstressed baptism and made it a false doctrine?

The second coming has been a greatly abused and perverted doctrine with many. False cults have greatly perverted the doctrine of Christ’s coming. People set dates. They speculate on signs. Should the rest of us Bible Christians, then, ignore the clear Bible doctrine of Christ’s imminent return because the doctrine has been abused? Certainly not.

Nor should we ignore the Bible doctrine of the fullness of the Spirit just because many associate it with talking in tongues and with sinless perfection.

Just so—we would be very foolish to turn Christmas over to Satan and worldlings. If the world has a Christmas of revelry, let us make it a day of love and a time of honoring Christ. Let us make much of the Christmas story, of Christmas carols and Christmas love and fellowship.

Do other people make giving gifts a mere form? Well, it does not need to be so for Christians. We can give gifts that really express our love. We can make gifts the response of an honest heart. We can send greetings with Scripture verses and with holy admonitions.

Is it wrong to have a day of rejoicing? Is it wrong to feast and to send portions to others? No indeed.

When, under Nehemiah, the remnant of Israel had gone back to the Land of Promise from the captivity in Babylon and the Law was read and explained, the people wept. It was not a time for weeping, but a time for rejoicing. The wall of Jerusalem had been rebuilt, the gates had been hung, the city had been restored as the city of God, and the worship had begun.

Let us listen to the plain commands of the Lord in such a case, as given in Nehemiah 8:9,10:

“And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

“Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

And we are glad to learn in verse 12:

“And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.”

If Israelites would honor God by having a day of joy and feasting and of sending portions to others because the wall was rebuilt, the gates were set up, and the worship was established, then we today do well to have a day to rejoice over the birth of the Saviour and to send portions to one another and to make merry with spiritual joy.

I feel nearer to God at Christmas than at any other time. I seem to love the Word of God more at Christmas, when we read and quote it again and again. I like the time as a good excuse to get into people’s hearts and win them to Christ. And many have been saved because I brought a Christmas message or urged sinners to accept God’s great Christmas Gift.

Let us have, then, a happy Christmas and make Christ supreme on this day which we remember in honor of His birth!

6. “Is It Proper to Give Gifts to Others on Christ’s Birthday?”

Certainly Christ should be first. But then He wants and deserves first place on every other day also! Giving should honor Christ, and certainly we should give ourselves and all we have to Him. But giving gifts to others is also a proper way to honor the Lord, according to Bible example and teaching.

At the feast of Purim, a feast to the Lord celebrating the great deliverance God gave the Jews in answer to the prayers of Mordecai and Esther and other devout Jews when wicked Haman planned to exterminate them, Jews were taught “that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22).

Again, when the Jewish remnant who returned from the captivity began to mourn on a holy day as they met to hear the reading of the Law, they were instructed, “Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord” (Neh. 8:10). So they returned home for feasting and sending gifts.

So giving gifts, if it be done in the right spirit and motive, honors God on special days set apart for Him.

Remember that God does not need our material things except as He wants them for other people. So under some circumstances giving to others may be as pleasing to Him as giving to pastors and missionaries. We should take care to give in Jesus’ name, remembering specially the poor at Christmas. But the right kind of giving to others is certainly fitting on Christmas.

When the rich young ruler wanted to be perfect, he was instructed to give his property to the poor, not to Jesus (Matt. 19:21); when Zacchaeus was converted, he was led to say. “The half of my goods I give to the poor” (Luke 19:8). That pleased Jesus very much.

Jesus said that He would reward everyone who gave a cup of cold water in His name. He also said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matt. 25:40).

So giving to others must please Christ very much, if it is done in loving thought toward Him and in His name. Certainly we should give to missions, to the poor and also to loved ones and relatives at Christmas. But be sure your motives are right.

7. “Should Christians Tell Their Children There Is a Santa Claus?”

Certainly not! Lying and deceit are wicked. Lying on Christmas is as great a sin as lying on any other day. It is shameful that Sunday schools often choose to teach a lying fable at Christmastime instead of teaching the marvelous true Christmas stories about the Baby in the manger, the shepherds in the field, the angel’s announcement of a Saviour born, the heavenly chorus and the wise men from the East. The story of the virgin-born Saviour is sweeter that any lie or fable invented by heathen people and spread by non-Christians.

I remember the sad, sad day when I, five years old, found that my father and mother and kin people had deceived me about Santa Claus—or Saint Nicholas. I was ashamed. I had been victimized. Those I trusted more than anybody else on earth, devout Christians, had lied. I wondered if other things they said were not true either. So Christmas was something of a mockery to me for years until I began to learn the sweetness of a Christmas centered about the birth of Christ.

Lying is wicked, is plainly forbidden in the Bible and is certain to have bad results. And the lie about Santa Claus is especially hurtful in that it crowds out interest in Christ Himself.  The Lord Jesus, in many so-called Christian homes, is crowded out by the old, fabled gentleman who is always seen on whiskey ads at this season of the year.

Parents should always tell the truth. My own children were happier about Christmas than those children who have known Christmas as the celebration of a lie.

8. “What About ‘Xmas’?”

Many people distribute leaflets urging us to “keep Christ in Christmas.” In these tracts they sometimes attack the use of “Xmas” as an abbreviation of Christmas. X, they say, is a symbol for an unknown quantity, and this is a devious device of the Devil to remove the name of Christ from Christmas.

While I personally feel it best not to use the abbreviated word “Xmas,” it was not a deliberate attempt—at least at first—to “take Christ out of Christmas.” Actually, in the Greek language a large letter similar to an X stood for the letters CH, and thus for Christ. Originally, then, Xmas was Christmas.

Be that as it may, I am strongly in favor of putting “Christ back in Christmas,” and I never use the abbreviated “Xmas.”

What a cutie!!!

My 4 year old daughter  was looking at the presents under the tree this morning.  She saw a large package behind it and commented that it was a really huge package.  I said "I didn't do a big present last night. Santa must have brought it."  She just looks at me because we have taught the kids that Santa isn't real.  She had that look like do you think I'm stupid on her face.  I said " then who brought it?"  She says "God must have!"

The best homeschool project we have done

I decided to go ahead and enter the 12 days of christmas contest hosted by homeschool estore.  I have entered on  Ruth's blog and t his is my entry for that.  Click on her name to see more about it!!

Some of our favorite things in our family are history, foreign currency, and scrapbooking.  So we decided to make a family project of all them!!!  It actually started about 6 years ago when my husband got into collecting foreign money.  At first it was just a small hobby that really didn't amount to much but it started growing!!  People found out that we were collecting the currency and we started getting it left and right.  We though, "Why not just scrap book it and make it into a nice album and it would keep the money from getting ruined."  So hubby and I started trying to figure out which coin goes to which country.  That is a lot of hard work by the way!!!  But while doing that, the kids would keep asking where certain coins went and what language did this country speak.  And many many more questions!!!  So we then got the brillant idea to start including the kids and we turned it into a history project for the entire family!!  The kids love to look up the different countries and they learn so much about each one.  We have divided the coins into seperate continents but the United States will be having it's own binder.  Did you know that there are many different ways to divide the continents??  We discovered that nobody can agree on how many there actually are!!  We have found between 3 and 9!!!!  So that one we will have to work out as we go.  We also discovered that there are some countries that are part of other countries such as Great Britian.  Then we discovered the Yugoslavia no longer exists as one country but as 2 different ones now!!!  This has been so very informative.  On each page we have included the country name, it's flag, the capital and Jesus Saves in their native language.    We have really enjoyed doing this and this is a project that will go even after the kids have all graduated from high school and are married off.  We hope to be able to do this with grandkids, but that is many many years away!!!

Fun stuff!!

I found this at a blog while I surfing tonight and though how fun!!!  So I copied and pasted it to here to answer the questions.  The blog it came from was Yummy Mommy  I think these are supposed to be funny but I'm not a comedian!!!

1. What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now?  Just the regular old Dove bar of soap. 

2. Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?  We don't eat watermelon so I hope not!!!!

3. What would you change about your living room?  New furniture!! 

4. Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty?  Right now they are dirty,  Haven't done the dishes from supper yet!!

5. What is in your fridge?  Leftovers!!

6. White or wheat bread?
  I'd prefer wheat, but nobody else does so we have white!!

7. What is on top of your refrigerator? A whole bunch of stuff, pans, paper plates and cups, candy.

8. What color or design is on your shower curtain?
  I have glass shower doors that are very dirty!!

9. How many plants are in your home?  A vine plant from mom's funeral, a banana tree, a hen and chick, and 3 spider plants. 

10. Is your bed made right now?  Right now I can't find it because I should be cleaning it!!!

11. Comet or Soft Scrub?  Comet

12. Is your closet organized?  Yep!!!

13. Can you describe your flashlight?  We have a blue one, and a silver mag, and a hand crank one.  The only one that works is the hand cranked one!!

14. Do you drink out of glass or plastic more at home?  Glass

15. Do you have iced tea made in a pitcher right now?  I always have iced tea in the fridge!!

16. If you have garage, is it cluttered?  The garage was converted to our bedroom several years ago!!

17. Curtains or blinds?  Curtains

18. How many pillows do you sleep with?  I have 3 and hubby has 3.

19. Do you sleep with any lights on at night?  I would prefer not to but hubby has on 2 lights for the kids.

20. How often do you vacuum?  Twice a week.

21. Standard toothbrush or electric?  Electric.

22. What color is your toothbrush?  Purple.

23. Do you have welcome mat on your front porch?  Nope!!

24. What is in your oven right now?  Nothing!!

25. Is there anything under your bed?  The gun and some dust.

26. Chore you hate the most?  I hate the bathroom and the dishes!!

27. What retro items are in your home?  2 chairs!

28. Do you have a separate room you use an an office?  nope!

29. How many mirrors are in your home? I have 3.

30. Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home?  Nope.

31. What color are your walls?  Our bedroom: white; girls bedroom: pale yellow; boys' bedroom: bright blue; bathroom: green; kitchen: paneling, living room; grey and silver;  dining room: green; hall: white 

32. What does your home smell like right now?  Sloppy Joes

33. Favorite candle scent?  Cucumber Melon.

34. What kind of pickles are in your refrigerator right now?  Sweet pickles, I'm out of dills!!

35. Ever been on your roof?  No way!!!  I'm terrified of heights.

36. Do you own a stereo?  Just 1.

37. How many TVs do you have?
  We have 3 but only one works.

38. How many phones?  2 Cell phones

39. Do you have a housekeeper?  I wish!!

40. What style do you decorate in?  Eclectic

Our assingment is to visit our class mates and let them know we are praying for them.  I don't know that I can visit each and everyone of you but know that I will be praying for you.

My prayer requests are:
1.  I have a family situation that really needs some prayers.  Somethings have happened that is putting a wedge in our family and I just hate it but it's a neccassary step that we had to take.
2.  My nephew, Kyhle, is in jail for shooting a man.  Kyhle is 16 and never been in trouble before.  This person as well as 2 other older boys have been teasing him for the past 3 months.  There's more details but this really isn't the place for it.  It does look like he will get off with self defense and be home for Christmas. 
3.  My final request is for my brother and SIL, Doug and Sarah.  They have their second child a little boy, Dominick, due at the end of February.  They just found out that he has spina bifida.  So if you could pray for them and their little girl, Karmyn, I'm sure it would be very much appreciated!!

Part A:  I don't really have any special recipies.  I usually make Chocolate Chip Cookies and just use the recipe from the bag of chips.

The real, the original, the authentic Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

 

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks, 1/2 pound) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated [white] sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 cups (12-ounce package) NESTLE TOLL HOUSE Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
1 cup chopped nuts

 

 


COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla in large mixer bowl. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition; gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.

 

 

Part B:  Growing up I wasn't involved in any of the baking so I can't share any memories of it.  I hope to change that with our kids.  They are very much involved with helping me to cook and bake all year round.

BAKE in preheated 375-degree [Fahrenheit] oven for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.
