Nature Notes ~ Bee Balm (Bergamot) Seed Heads

On our nature walk yesterday we came upon a patch of Bee Balm (Bergamot, Monarda) seed heads in the garden. They are fascinating to look at and we thought that they looked similar to the honey comb inside of a bee hive.

I'm sure that the teeny seeds that were inside of the seed heads are long gone and what you are actually looking at is the chaff or protective casings that held the precious seeds before they were released.

Butterflies, bumble bees & hummingbirds love them because when they are in full bloom in the summertime they are full of delicious nectar. I found a photo that I had taken last summer to show you how pretty they are in bloom :)

I love the smell of bergamot(in teas). It has very unique blooms. Is it easy to grow?

I've heard the word bergamot several times in regard to being a perfume ingredient, but didn't know what it really was. Very pretty!
