Summer Reading

Our school year is winding down.  Actually today is our last official day of school (180) and next Firday is the last day for public schools.  So we are still piddling with a few things.  Reed is doing a grammar workbook and cursive and math.  Both are finishing a Charlotte's Web unit.  Spenser has a math test today and a science test .  And we are doing GA history at least through next Friday, maybe the fun stuff a little longer.

But I definitely want them to keep reading this summer.  So I decided to make a reading log for each child and award prizes.  Counting books or pages didn't seem fair since there is a wide range of reading levels, so I decided to count minutes.  (the younger 2 count minutes that they are read to) I thought 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week would be 100 a week and 1000 for the summer.  So I made these prize levels:  every 100 minutes= small prize (dollar store) or gold gollar.  At 500 minutes, we go to Brusters.  For 1000 I named a prize for each one that they would like.  (game boy games for older 2, Barbie for younger 2)

Well, it is working LOL.  I may be broke by the end of the summer.  (Who am I kidding, I am broke anyway) We are on Day 3 and they have all done over 100, one is over 250 and one is over 350.  My 11 year old son asked my husband to wake him up at 7 am so he could read LOL.  The 7 year old is in there helping the 4 year old read-- and they have the most conflict of all my children normally.

I went to the dollar store last night and bought several things and also ordered a few clearance items from CBD.  So hopefully I am prepared at least for a week or 2

I have enjoyed reading your site. I was tagged today and I decided to tag you. You are supposed to tell us 6 random things about you. I don't think you have done this yet, but if you have let me know. I look forward to seeing more! Eva

So, the love of money (and the stuff it buys) is not only the root of all evil, but also the root of early rising and sibling harmony? I need to rework my theology. :)

Love you. You are an awesome mom and teacher!

Happy teacher week and pre-mother's day.
