Wisdom, Bible Study and Preschoolers

Posted in Church God Faith

I teach the children at our church on Wednesday nights.  We have used a variety of Bible studies and programs.  Currently we are using a study on wisdom.  Which I need, apparently :)

I have about a dozen kids in my class and they range in age from 3 to 12.  Its not easy to teach to that many levels, but I am a homeschooler, this is what I do, right?

Tonight the lesson was on the wisdom of honesty.  We read about Jeremiah and the yoke and the false prophets.  Etc etc.  One of the games to play involved a pile of quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies, candy and a stack of cards to draw.  Each card said "draw a penny from the penny pile" or "draw a piece of candy from the candy pile" and so on.  No one was supposed to know what was on your card so that the point about honesty was driven home.  Did you take what your card said or did you take what you wanted?

Problem #1:  I had 5 non-readers in the group.  No problem, I thought.  I have a teenage helper and I put her in the hall and they could go out and ask her what their paper said.

Problem #2:  Several of the little ones didn't know the difference between pennies, nickels, etc.  Not a real problem they could just get a coin and it would be okay.

Problem #3:  Umm, they wanted candy.  My 3 year old started crying because she got a penny and she wanted the smarties.  She didn't know that I had planned to let them all trade in their coins for a piece of candy.

Oh well ,maybe someone learned something from it.  Mostly me, I am sure :)  They liked the deviled eggs, anyway.  (Yoke, yolk, get it?)

May. 17, 2006 - Learning at different levels

Posted by 5atkins

Just like you were trying to teach different ages, different levels of learning took place. The three year old learned that we read funny symbols on paper which tell us what we are allowed to do and that sometimes we don't get what we want. The older ones hopefully learned more spiritual lessons, right! You being the oldest learner may have experienced in a way, the challenges of a pastor, who preaches to many on different spiritual levels each week. It boggles my mind to think about how God can personalize the learning of all of His children to our own special needs and abilities!
I don't know why I am getting so deep in this response. I just wanted to encourage you that I am sure you were quite successful in teaching your class!
Can't wait to hear about another lesson! :)

Goodness...that sounds so like teaching little ones.

I got here following links and you asked a question on the last blog about the carnival of homeschooling. A blog carnival is essentially a collection of links on a central theme (here homeschooling). Each participant selects an entry they would like to share and sends it to the host. The host then weaves the links together and everyone comes to visit and peruse the offereings. It is a great way to read new blogs and get some traffic as well.

I'm hosting it next week, and would love if you'd consider submitting. The guidelines can be found here: http://whyhomeschool.blogspot.com/2005/12/where-to-send-your-submission-for-next.html

It sounds like you handle the problems well. I'm sure some of the kids got what you were teaching. At least you learned something. LOL
