School Year Evaluation

Posted in School

I got this in an email from a  homeschool Yahoo group I belong to.  I thought I would do my portion here, but I am going to ask the kids and my husband to respond and put it in a folder I am compiling for each school year.  This was only our second year of homeschooling, and while I plan to do things much differently next year, I don't have (m)any regrets.

Evaluate Your School Year

Use this checklist or make your own to see what went right
and what went wrong this year so that you can adjust for next
year.  Remember, we all have different styles in teaching and this may not apply to some families - however, this great way to get an over all view of how you think you did and how your students feel they did.  It's great to do now, while things are fresh in your mind.  You might want to discuss these items as a family and/or do a private interview with each member to get a complete picture.

Be sure to include your husband and each child for their
individual perspectives.  You will need to adapt the questions
for each one (e.g., Dad: Do you know what our children learned
this year?  What would you have liked them to learn that they did
not learn?).   Please do not let this evaluation discourage you!  Rejoice
and thank the Lord for what went well and learn from weak areas
so that you do even better next year.

--- Evaluation Checklist ---

General

[_]  What did you like best about our home school this year?
I love being with my kids.  I love spending time with them all day every day.  I love seeing their faces light up when they get something.  I love that when my son was struggling with writing, I was able to help him.  I just love my family and am so glad we are on this journey together,

[_]  What did you like least about our home school this year?
When Spenser's arm was in a cast, I feel like Reed got a little shortchanged.  I was having to do so much for him, that I feel I neglected her at times.  (in the area of schoolwork, not in general)  She is very bright and very motivated, so she was fine, but I still have a twinge of guilt.

[_]  What did you learn?
I learned that I can teach 2 kids at different levels one subject, which will make next year so much more fun.  I learned that textbooks and curricula are not one size fits all.  I learned that it is okay to skip a chapter or a section or a unit if your child needs something else.  I learned that I don't ever want my kids back in public school.  I learned that caterpillars get really fat really fast, and that 4 year ools don't want to release butterflies after raising them from caterpillars.  Oh and I learned about simple machines and fossils and American History and rocks and minerals and all kinds of exciting things that I used to know but I forgot.

[_]  What did you not learn that you would have liked to?  How to be a perfect mom :)

Academics

[_]  Were basic foundational skills of reading, language, and
math improved, mastered, reviewed, and practiced enough?

Yes, I think so.  Reed and Spenser are fluent readers and already ahead in math.  Sydney learned to read using My Father's World.  I think Reed needs more help in spelling and they both need more writing experience, but I am very satisfied with their work.

[_]  Were specific facts connected to the big picture of overall
knowledge through the use of a globe, maps, timelines,
       charts, and related information?

We are probably a little lacking in geography and timelines, but MOH next year should help.

[_]  Did we use a variety of teaching methods and materials,
(e.g., textbooks, workbooks, unit studies, hands-on
activities, computer software, library or supervised
Internet research, field trips, oral and written reports)?

Yes and no.  I hope to do more next year, but I really have no regrets about the past 2 years. I did the best I could and  I am very happy with where we are.

[_]  Were thinking skills taught and encouraged by the types of
discussions we had (e.g., comprehension, knowledge, analysis, synthesis, application, and evaluation)?

Hmm, I don't know.  I hope so?

[_]  Was there enough good supplemental reading done as a family
       or independently?

Is there ever enough?  I think we started slow but picked up at the end.  The summer reading we are doing is going great!

[_]  Was there time, resources, and encouragement available to
       pursue individual interests?
Yes although I think at times we tried to do too much.  Spring we were overwhelmed with soccer, scouts, plays, drawing class etc.

Spiritual

[_]  Did your family read God's Word and pray together daily?
Sadly, not every day, but very often.

[_]  Was Bible knowledge and Bible study skills increased?
Yes.  I am happy with their knowledge.

[_]  Were Bible reading and memorization given at least as much
       importance as academic studies?
We have not done alot of memorization but I hope to do more.

[_]  Were subjects taught from a Christian worldview?

Yes!

Character Development

[_]  Was character development an important part of our school
(e.g., honor and obedience to mother as the teacher and
parent; kindness to siblings; diligence; truthfulness; and
       attention to details in studies)?

Another area where we started late but finished strong.   And I hope to do more intentional work in this area.

[_]  Was child discipline maintained in a simple, straightforward,
and kind manner?  Were the rules and consequences clear and
       consistently carried out?
Mostly ? :)  I am sure I fail in this area, but I try to be consistent.

[_]  Were there enough positive motivations and negative
       consequences?

Yes I think so.

Life Skills

[_]  Were life skills included in your training and related to
academic subjects (e.g., budgeting, cooking, shopping,
       driving, cleaning, organizing, scheduling, repairing,
maintaining a house, yard, and car, voting, finding
information by phone, letter, or supervised Internet use)?

Somewhat.  Spenser and Reed are learning to do laundry.  All 4 have chores.  Spenser is learning alot in scouts.

Logistics

[_]  Was the schedule realistic and easy to keep?  Too strict or
too lax?  Was doing schoolwork a regular, daily habit
(along with chores and personal grooming)?
Yes.

[_]  Did we have a good balance between group and independent
       study?
Yes.

[_]  Were the classes we did as a group interesting, and did they
       allow each student to learn?

I hope so.

[_]  Was mother available for help when needed?  Was there a need
for alternative activities or procedures when she was
       unavailable?

See above note about Reed.

[_]  Did we care for our toddlers and babies in the best way for
       them and for our studies?

I hope so.

[_]  Were the settings for our studies appropriate and conducive
&nbp;  to learning (e.g., dining room table, couch, individual desks)?

Yes.

[_]  Did we have enough, not enough, or too much independent
study?  Was there enough time, space, supervision, and help
       available for these studies?

Not sure.

[_]  What got bogged down that could have gone more quickly?

Spenser got bogged down alot before he broke his arm, but something clicked during the weeks that I was helping him because he could not write. Even when the cast was off, he got finished much more quickly than before.

[_]  Was there enough organization and planning for space,
       materials, schedule, and chores?

Never :)

[_]  Were there enough varied experiences or too many outside
activities?  Were our supplemental and outside activities
       worth the time and effort?

Sometimes too many.  But it was all good stuff :)

[_]  Was the atmosphere of our home warm, loving, and supportive?

 Usually

Bottom Line

[_]  What do you want to do the same or differently next year?

Next year, we will be changing much of our curricula.  We are doing history and science together, when I find exciting.  (MOH and CKEB)  More hands on-- this year was largely textbook and computer.  We are scrapping Lifepacs.  Continuing Saxon Math for Spenser, undecided about Reed and Sydney,  Adding LLATL, Spelling Power, and A Reason for Handwriting.   Continuing Writing Strands.  Using SOS Bible for Spenser and Reed.  We may throw in a foreign language, but I am not sure.

For Sydney and Macy I will continue MFW,  and I am adding ARFH for Sydney.  And a little math, haven't decided what.

Use Your Evaluation To Plan Your Next Year
Use your evaluation outcomes to make general, broad plans
for next year and for your summer studies.  You can do specific
and detailed planning later; this is just to be sure you include
the valuable input from this year's evaluation.

Make quick notes beside certain answers on your evaluation
forms.  Then set dates for your comprehensive planning for next
year, allowing time to purchase and become familiar with any new
curriculum.   Be in prayer - always bring your new ideas and old ideas to the feet of Jesus and ask Him for guidance in your coming school year.

Leslie, I really enjoyed reading these evaluation questions and your responses! I copied it to a word sheet so I can answer them for myself and pass along to friends not on line. I also feel so blessed to be able to be home with mine and teach them as God leads us! Again, I wish in Florida that homeschooling was less controlled and accountable to the state. I believe that just as God gives us our children, we should be accountable to Him only for educating them, but unless we move we will follow the law where we live! Thanks again for the post!

Leslie, I am so glad that you found this information helpful on my just4homeschoolfamilies yahoo group! Getting the word out to other homeschool families is so important and encouraging. Oh, I'm glad I stopped by your blog... your babies are so cute! Sounds like they are a lot of fun, too!
