Just some random thoughts to myself about what I liked this year or didn't like. We did our first unit studies. Spenser and Reed studied Charlotte's Web. I had 2 different studies for them because they are 3 years apart. Reed's was online here. I picked what I liked from it. We didn't do all the vocabulary but we did some every day. And basically I chose one question a day for her to journal about. Spenser used an NLP Literature study that I downloaded from somewhere for free. I can't find the link now. They have the same one at homeschoolestore. It's 5.99. I am sure we could have done much more with it, but it was my first time. We had fun, and the kids seemed to like it. They watched the movie yesterday. We also did a unit on Georgia history that I just made up as we went along. It would have been better if we had a "real" study, but I found alot of good stuff online. And we will revisit it in the future I am sure. The kids had fun and what I learned was that they learned 100x more from the "projects" than from the reading I did. Again, we could have done more with it, but we are taking baby steps. We have come along way in a short time and I am excited for the future. I cannot say enough positive about Writing Strands. Spenser did a 2 page book report on CW at the end (with no qualms, tears, gnashing of teeth or anything) and when he brought it to me, he said "That was fun." Rewind about 6 months and see the boy literally crying at the kitchen table because he has to write a paragraph. I thank God for whoever first told me about Writing Strands. I wish I knew who it was so I could give them a big ole kiss. ![]() |
