I saw The Davinci Code...
We
decided to take the college kids from church to see the movie so that
we could have a discussion with them after. Many of them were
going to see it anyway, and we were hoping to help them with any
questions it raised. We had free tickets, so we didn't actually
give the movie makers any money-- I felt good about that LOL.
We took a group of 8 and saw it Friday night. I was actually
surprised-- I enjoyed the mystery part of the movie. Liked the
mystery, hated the theology. I didn't expect to like it at
all. But the whole premise was ludicrous and poorly
supported. My fear, though, is that people with little church
history knowledge will hear things that sound familiar and historical
like "Council of Nicea" and assume he is presenting facts.
I don't recommend the movie to anyone, but I am glad we had the time
with the college group. They always impress me with their depth
and knowledge.

The reason you stated is the exact reason I won't see the movie. I don't feel I'm "growed up" enough in my bible knowledge enough to separate truth from fiction! I'm happy to know I was correct in my assumption! :) Thanks!

Hi -
The Pastor at our church shared a DVD that disputed the faulty theology. He also said that we not be afraid to read it as "fiction." After all, when people speak against the Bible, what do we say? "Well, have you read it?" And, people usually say "No."
I work at a bookstore and am allowed to check-out books if I want, so I didn't put any money in Dan Brown's pocket either. I found it engaging - it did keep me wondering what would happen next. Whenever he launched into his anti-Christian storytelling, my eyes would glaze over. Time to skim. I definitely felt like he was really try to spread his perspective as his lectures went on much too long to just be support for the plot. Unfortunately, I think the book has done so well because it's telling a lot of people exactly what they want to believe - that Christians (in general) are secretive, corrupt, and only interested in hiding "truths" that really support modern politically correct thinking.
I'm so glad I now have the discernment to see the fiction clearly. Too bad his work will bring others low. But, who knows? Maybe God will use what comes of this to reclaim some lost sheep. Sometimes we have to be brought low in order to reach out to Him and finally listen (speaking from personal experience).
Blessings
Diane
