Summer

We started our summer break and I think everyone is glad for the down time.  I have been working on lesson plans for next year.  I have been using Lifepacs which have been so easy for me-- 10 units divied into 36 weeks, pretty easy to do.  Now I am trying to decide how many days to do history (is 3 enough?) science (is 2 enough?) etc and make it all match up.  And we have so many times throughout the year that end up being half days or whatever that I know these are just guidelines.  If only school went like it looks on paper LOL.

Of course, we won't really stop schooling for the summer, we will just be unschoolers LOL.  Reed is reading biographies to earn a badge for Stepping Stones (she has to read 10), and she is also working on her cooking badge and her laundry badge.  She has already read a bio of Helen Keller and Sacajawea.  Spenser completed his requirements for tenderfoot for Boy Scouts so now he will be working on 2nd Class.  He is going to Boy Scout camp and will have a chance to earn 5 merit badges there-- archery, rifle shooting, swimming, fishing and canoeing.   Sydney and Macy are still working on phonics, but only because they enjoy it.

We do Science Monday and Friday for two hours and History on Tuesdsay, Wednesday and Thursday for one hour each. And I always write my lesson plans in pencil because sometimes life is much more interesting then "school."

I think it would be ok to do Social Studies 3 times a week and Science twice. Sounds like your children are going to have a fun summer. My boy is going to boy scout camp too in July. This will be his first year. He is very excited.

My school days are like that too-- fantastic on paper, but a little lacking in real life. But at least I'm aspiring to something better, even if I fall short! And by the way, I haven't seen the movie, but my thoughts on the DaVinci Code book were the same as yours...

I like your schedule idea because it is mine. I never get to follow it because of life. I started reading to the kids at night from the Abeka History books. They like it and they are getting their history. My dd loves history and is old enough to do it on her own...I do science in many different ways as an extra to the days we fit it in. It seems we live in nature and science happens alot when they go to work with their dad so I do not follow a program quite yet. My older son liked Life Pacs and I may do them for my dd when she is highschool, they are easy and likeable. You are a good HS planner.
