My Church Day

Posted in Church God Faith

Well I was the minister's wife in full force today.  Sometimes I can forget that I am a PW, but definitely not today.  We had 5 people from the church going on a mission trip to Alaska today including the senior pastor. And they needed someone to drive them to the airport.  And not the associate pastor (my husband) because he was preaching tonight and needed the study time.

So this morning my 11 year old son went out and cleaned out the church bus ( we normally drive children in it, so it was pretty dirty)  Then he mopped it :)  I picked them up at the church and drove them to the Atlanta airport.  I was nervous but it went fine.  (Meanwhile the associate pastor was home with all the kids getting his "study time" LOL)

So tonight I took Jason's class since he had the adult Bible Study to lead.  (He normally has a youth worship on Wednesday nights)  It was very intimidating, but I thought it went ok.  God's message was great, even if the messenger was a little weak.  We combined my class and his, so we had kids 3rd-6th grade, teens, and some college students.

As they came in and we asked them to put on a mask (like a mardi gras type mask) and a robe (choir robe.)  This symbolized the way we hide our brokenness from those around us.  We did a skit (think of it as a modern day Good Samaritan with emotional pain instead of physical): A girl was sitting in a pew, obviously sad, and 3 people came by and asked her "how are you" without taking time to listen to her answer.  But the fourth girl came and took time to listen to her say (in essence) "I'm Not Alright."

This led directly into the song "I'm not Alright" by Sanctus Real.  It's a very powerful song.  I talked about wearing masks and how we spend alot of time and energy covering up our brokenness and what we might be covering up.  (Maybe you are Moses and wear your mask for image management-- you don't want us to see that the glory has faded.  Maybe you are David and are covering up your sin.  Or maybe you are a fraud, like Judas and you don't want us to know that you don't really belong. At this point I clumsily shared the gospel in case anyone there was not saved)

Next we showed a video using the song "Stained Glass Masquerade" from Casting Crowns.  Leading into the "invitation" I  talked about removing the masks so we can have authentic worship and so that we can bear one another's burdens as we are commanded too.  As we took off our masks and robes we had a 3-fold invitation.  The song playing was "Cry Out to Jesus" by Third Day and they had 3 venues for confession:  the open mike if they needed public confession (no one did); a makeshift altar (kneeling bench) for private confession (I saw a few use this); and  paper, pens and matches where they could write their confessions and then burn them (in a pot).  I think almost everyone used that one.  (Hey how often do you get to play with matches in church LOL?)

Then we had worship music with 3 college kids on guitar.  We sang, "Blessed Be Your Name," "You are my King (Amazing Love)" and "How Great is Our God."  As we left we took the "stained glass" (tissue paper) off the windows as a symbolic gesture.

Sounds like you did a great job :)

My son is going into the ministry and is also getting married next year. His fiancee worries at times about the responsibilities of being a pastor's wife. Maybe I'll have to send her to you for advice :)

Take care,
Barb

You rock, Babe! Thanks for all you do. I know you prefer to stay behind the scenes, but there's no one I'd have more confidence in to share an authentic word from God and from the heart. I love you!
