My twenty cents keeps moving!

Hmmm am I reading too much into this?

Tonight at church an older lady asked my 8 y.o. daughter, "Are you going to go to regular school this year?"  Something in the way she said it made me feel criticized.  (I know, I know, Eleanor Roosevelt, no one can make you  yada yada yada)

Strangely enough, I babysit her great niece and nephew and will be schooling them in a sense.  (low-key preschool stuff)  I have kept the little girl for the past 2 years and she and my 4 y.o. daughter are best friends.

Anyway I was proud of Reed.  She merely replied "No ma'am."  My insides were churning with responses but I liked hers best so I kept my mouth shut.

In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that refraineth his lips is wise. Proverbs 10:19

Good scripture! Yeah, the something I think probably made it seem like criticism was the word "regular". It kind of implies that if the other is regular yours must be irregular. There's the rub... intended or not. Eh... what's regular to one fellow is not necessarily regular to another.

You say she is an "older lady"... probably because of the era in which she grew up public is very normal and regular to her. But you know, that always boggles me -- shouldn't it be the older generations that applaud us for giving our children a better way considering it's usually the older people who make those "oh this generation" kind of statements. And those statements are usually right. Why they don't make the connection between that kind of thing and homeschooling trying to correct some of that mess I just don't understand! :-) Ah well.

Good for Reed.. respectful honest response! Good for mom, holding her tongue! Wise, indeed!

Blessings!

Maybe you can think of it like gasoline...

Regular school (public) 87 octane

Plus school (private) 89 octane

Premium school (homeschool) 93 octane

Older people don't have a clue what is going on in today's schools. For that precious older lady, regular, as she is thinking of it in her mind, doesn't even exist. You were wise to hold your tongue.

Hey--I have some questions to send you for my article but when I try your email it keeps bouncing back. Would you please send me an email and then I'll send you the questions by replying? rebecca@rebeccapowell.com

Thanks!

Good for you!!! We've been getting the homeschool/public school questions, too. I always get so defensive! (But, we're "only" in "first grade." Does it get easier to not feel so defensive with time?)
