Back to School

Posted in School

We are starting back to school on Monday.  I was hoping to wait a week or two, but I am doing science labs with 2 other families and this is the best week to start with other scheduling issues.  I am excited.  We went and bought school supplies yesterday (tax free weekend in GA).  I think it got the kids excited, because they came home and started doing math.  It was eerie

I am also keeping/teaching a 4 year old and a 3 year old starting back this week.  The 4 year old will come Monday Tuesday and Thursday mornings and the 3 year old will come Tuesday-Friday from 9-4.  I need the income and I have kept the both before so its not a big adjustment for any of us.  I have had Haley (4) off and on for 2 -1/2 years.  She is like a member of the family.  I am using My Father's World for the 4 little ones, modified for the younger ones.  I am adding some math for Sydney and more phonics with her because she is reading.  The others are still learning sounds and letters.  Also I have A Reason for Handwriting-K for Sydney.

I still need to buy a sewing board before Friday for our timeline for Mystery of History.  Other than that I think I am all set.  I am excited about CKEB too.  Two of my friends are also going to be using it, so we decided to meet every other Thursday to do the projects.

I am using LLATL for my older 2, but I am starting with a Book Study that is not in the book.  (I am rebellious that way.)  Spenser is going to do Julie of the Wolves and Reed is doing Mr Popper's Penguins.  (You probably know this, but you can find tons of literature studies online for free.  You can just google the book title and find them.)  We are also using Spelling Power and Writng Strands.  Both of the older kids are using Saxon math, which is a favorite here.  I am not starting Sydney on Saxon yet, just some basic math concepts and free worksheets.

My favorite new subject is Latin.  I had Latin in high school and when I found Latina Christiana for $5 at the used book sale, I was thrilled.  It is a good approach for us, and for $5 I got a student book, a teacher book, and the pronunciation cd.

I have not ordered Reed's Bible cd's yet (lack of funds.)  I keep getting outbid on ebay.  So I downloaded a free Bible study for her until I get the SOS.  Also, Spenser is going to do his God and Church badge work for Scouts in place of his SOS for the first 8 weeks.

I love starting back to school! We start on the 14th, and I can't wait! Enjoy the "not back to school" breakfast! It's one of our favorite things to do! :)

Aug. 6, 2006 - Isn't Back to School excitement great?!

You know that things will start off on the right foot when they are already starting to do their studies before you officially begin! :)

I admire you for taking on two other children while you have your own four. You mentioned teaching them. Are you allowed to teach other people's children in GA or do you mean unoffically? In Florida you are not allowed to count it as homeschool teaching from another adult unless the child's parent is physically present during the presentation of the material. Many people in our church have asked me if I would be willing to homeschool their children. I explained that in Florida that is considered private tutoring and you have to be certified to teach in FL to do that! I used to keep a baby. I had her from 3 months old to 18 months old, five days a week, from 7AM to usually 5 and sometimes 6PM. She was a good baby, but it was hard because I had to schedule our lives around Katie. I wasn't comfortable driving with her in the car (her parents waited 9 years for her and had two miscarriages) so I had to stay home when she was with us. We couldn't go to the library except on Saturdays and no swimming in the pool until she left. I felt very free when I finally ended it. We could really use the extra income too, but I am so spoiled now for being free to do our schedule. I think I would like it more to watch children who are older and can do some of the school with us like you will be doing! I pray that it goes well and is a blessing to you and your family as well as theirs!

I wanted to ask you to write me about the Elsie books. You mentioned that you only like book 7. Do you have the original versions or the modern adaptations? I bought an original version of book one. I had to explain a lot of vocabulary to the girls at first but it has really helped the girls to learn new words. I did not read the slaves dialect though because I knew it would be very hard for the girls to understand. I just paraphrased that part. Anyway, my dh picked up book two for me and he didn't get the same version. He bought the new ones that have come out with the dolls and all that. I didn't like them as much. Also I had real issues with the Sabbath breaking episode going so far! So I would love to hear what you think about them in more detail. Where did you get your copies? I first saw them in the Vision Forum catalog and had intended ordering from their, but then saw this set at the CBstore for less. Unfortunately I could only get one at a time and now they aren't carrying the rest of the set!

Sorry to have gone so long! In Him, Eva
