Be it ever so humble...

I am home after a 4 day trip to Virginia to see about my dad.  I am so happy to be home with my husband and kids.  My mom helped out so much while I was gone.  We could never make it without her!  Amazingly my brother and I only got into one heated argument the whole trip, and that was on the way back.  We started talking about advance directives and living wills and Terri Schiavo.  Bad topic LOL.

I was very sad when I first saw my dad.  He looked very old and very ill.  By the time I left he had improved a great deal.  He had a massive stroke 2 weeks ago and is paralyzed on his left side.   He is having trouble swallowing so they inserted a temporary feeding tube.  He can't have water (which he was pretty inhappy about) or anything my mouth until he gets his "swallow" functioning properly.  He is in a rehabilitative facility where he will receive intense therapy for the next 4 weeks,  After that, we will have to see if he is self-sufficient enough to go home or needs another rehab facility.  He would qualify for the VA hospital, I think.

It is so weird to be in this position.  My dad is only 58 and I didn't expect to have to make these kinds of decisions for my parents this soon.  Plus, with our distant relationship, it seems odd that my brother and I are the ones to make these decisions at all.  If it were my mom, I would know more what to do.  I used to say flippantly that because of the choices my dad has made in his life, he would one day be old and alone.  Now that the reality is here, it is very sad.
