WFMW Myspace

Posted in WFMW

If you have a teenager (or work with them), I encourage you to get a Myspace account.  I have one because I like to stay connected with our youth at church.  It is a great way to keep up with them, and the best way to contact them, when you can't get them to respond by email or phone :)  I have grown much closer to the kids in our group by reading their blogs (and those soemtimes annoying bulletins.)  You may be shocked and saddened occasionally by what they say, but other times you will be extremely proud.

That being said, I have an almost teenager and he isn't going to be allowed to have a Myspace account anytime soon.  There is alot on there that I don't want him exposed to.  Call me overprotective, but I just can't do it.

Myspace stats:
  • launched in 2003
  • originally the home to 20-somethings interested in Indie music in LA
  • over 80 million accounts have been created
  • average user is aged 14-24
  • more pageviews per day than any site except yahoo

I think it would really help if you're a youth pastor or pastor's wife. It would be a way to stay connected. I'm still phobic about freaky people, so there will be no myspace in my kids future. But, being ignorant doesn't help me either.

yahoo is first? That surprises me. Not sure why, but it does. I need to check it out.

That is a really good point. I hadn't thought about the value of having an account to connect with the kids that had one. Sounds like a lot of them do. Great idea.
