NEW- Tell Me About Your Homeschool Tag - Meme from Seeking Rest in the Ancient Paths

I started homeschooling (years ago or year)

I homeschool __ of my children

All 4 of our children plus 2 extras.

I teach my children to read at age(specific age or not?)

Spenser and Sydney learned at age 4, Reed was 5.  Macy is 4 now, so we'll see.

A few of my most favorite homeschool teaching resources are:

Saxon Math, Mystery of History, lapbooks.

Do you write out goals for school each year?

No but I do my lesson plans and choose my curricula with goals in mind.

What time do you start school each day? Do you have a specific schedule?

We try to start by 9.

I have used ___ math programs. My favorite is:

Saxon.  Love it.

I have used ___ science programs. My favorite is:

Alpha Omega Lifepacs, Christian Kids Explore Biology and this year Christian Kids Explore Chemistry (Spenser) and Christian Kids Explore Earth and Space (Reed and Sydney).  I will probably switch Spenser to Apologia next year.

I have used ___ grammar/english programs. My favorite is:

AOP and LLATL so far.  Plus Spelling Power.  This year A Beka.  Haven't loved any but they were adequate.  Interestingly, my children didn't fare as well on the ITBS in grammar/capitalization/spelling as they did in other subjects.  So if you have a recommendation, I'm open.

I have used ___ history programs. My favorite is:

AOP and Mystery of History.  LOVE MOH, this year we will do MOH 2.

What months do you homeschool during?

We follow the local public schools, so Aug- May.

Favorite homeschool method?

I am not methodical LOL.  I am slightly Classical, but not hardcore LOL.  The Classical people would kick me out of their club for sure.  (Labels make me feel so unworthy. )

Do you/plan to homeschool all the way through high school?

I think so.  If one of my kids expressed a strong desire to go to ps for high school, we would prayerfully consider it.

Have you noticed specific learning styles in each child?

I am trying to assess this.  I can see differences between Spenser and Reed but haven't figured out what to do about it.  He is very much an auditory learner, it looks like she is not.  So I need to figure out how to help her.

Do you keep specific or general records? Or none, really?

General.  Therefore, high school frightens me as it looms ahead of us.

Do you teach Bible, art, journaling, phys. ed.?

Yes to Bible, not yet to art (always mean to) no to journaling, and I let soccer count as P.E.  Are you sesnsing a pattern of laxness?  I am overwhelmed by what we already do and can't figure out how to add more.   The 4 core subjects plus Latin and Bible are almost more than we can handle.  We are adding Logic for Spenser this year-- I buy art books every  year but never get it done.

Where do you like to shop for homeschool books and resources?

mostly eBay.

What resources have you been itching to try?

not sure  I am pretty set for this year, although my son wants to do logic so I need to buy The Fallacy Detective..

*Do you use and/or like to use E-books?*

yes, love them.  I find alot of great stuff on homeschool estore

Do you have anything to add?

The more I homeschool, the more I learn that curriculum and even method are less important than just investing the time in teaching your kids.  Don't be afraid to switch horses midstream if what you are using is not working.

I liked reading about your school.

but you love Saxon? ugh. I just tolerate it. My son is doing 7/6 and my daughter is doing 6/5. Not loving it....nope.

but what else is there, really? for the higher grades. I keep hearing about Math u see. We'll see indeed. I'm skeptical about them too. :)

Aug. 3, 2007 - I finally got over here to read your answers!

Great answers!
I loved reading them and learning about your homeschool. I love your advice at the end. So true. So true.

I will tell you, that after all of your time and love, etc. you have put into your children as youngun's - you are going to want to keep them home in high school to reap the benefits!! This is the best time! I am friends with the girls and I am getting to know them as I wouldn't be able to if they were in ps.
And, also, as we are considering moving to another state, I am glad I have gotten a little more recorded than I need to for IN. I think a moderate amt. of records is a good thing. If you start before they get to hs, it's a lot easier. I made up a lot of my hs class requirements. I have a great book by Barb Shelton.
I meant to put that on there: What are your favorite resources!!! I think I will add it!

I also really loved this:
I am not methodical LOL. I am slightly Classical, but not hardcore LOL. The Classical people would kick me out of their club for sure.
That was funny! I know what you mean. We are eclectic.

Thank you and be blessed!!!
