Art for Homeschoolers

Mr. Weeks called me and came out and visited with me about teaching art to homeschoolers. I think he has taught classes in the past and has some private students. He is a deacon at a local church. He was pleasant to visit with. I am forwarding his information.

If you are interested or have any questions he said he would love to visit with you.

Oklahoma History Book

A new Oklahoma History book has just been approved for sale in Oklahoma Public Schools.  I have reviewed a copy and would like to recommend it.  Mike Adkins and Whit Edwards of the Oklahoma History Center helped write it along with nine other prestigious Oklahoma scholars.  It includes geography, government and economics. The fourth grade level text is comprehensive and includes highlighted vocabulary words and a timeline throughout the book.  It is hard cover with 312 full color pages.  Reading lists and other activities are suggested.

The cost of the textbook is $29.95.  I am checking on how much tax, shipping and handling will be since they are technically not for sale to individuals yet.  As an Oklahoma History Teacher I am taking orders ( I DO NOT get a portion of the sales).  If you are interested, please contact me at pastkeeper1891(at)yahoo(dot)com or 405-275-5652.  I would like to have at least 25 orders before April 30th so even if you think that you might be interested, please let me know.  When the order is placed, I believe you can make your check out to the publisher but I will also check on that.

Thanks,
Beverly Mosman

Homeschool Free Stuff

Submitted by Teresa B.

This is a great resource for purchasing educational software as well as providing great web links from time to time. Under the Language Arts link poetry in 30 days is a great web site for a poetry unit study.
Enjoy,

School Discovery Website

Recently I came across a great site, http://school.discovery.com/, that is part of the Discovery Channel website.  Perhaps you need a boost in your home school or a bit of variation from the norm.  This site has oodles of helpful information on just about every subject from kindergarten through high school, and includes the following:

lesson plans
worksheet generator
puzzlemaker
brain boosters
clip art gallery
study starters
teaching tools
homework helpers
science fair resources

My favorite is Puzzlemaker, a puzzler generator, which allows you to create and print customized word search, crossword, math, and other puzzles using your own word lists.

Apologia Science

While talking with another home school mom at the fall social, I told her about the schedules for the Apologia science books that I use for my children.  This mom mentioned that several other home schoolers in Shawnee also use Apologia science and would probably like to have the information about the schedules as well.

You may have seen this information before, but Donna Young has a website which "contains homeschool forms, school calendars, household planners, printables in various subjects, and planning tips for those who are educating children."  Donna also offers schedules specifically for the Apologia books.  I have used her schedules successfully with my son for General Science and Physical Science and am currently using one for Biology.  My 14-year old son works well with a schedule and dutifully checks off his work as he completes it.  I like the fact that he is completing one module every two weeks and that the lessons are laid out for him daily.  In addition to these schedules, Donna also provides printable bookmarks with each module's vocabulary words.

You can find the Apologia resources at http://donnayoung.org/apologia/index.htm.

If anybody has other resources, suggestions, or helpful tips related to Apologia, please share them with the rest of us.  Also, out of curiosity, how many Shawnee home schoolers use Apologia for science?  Please comment below if you do.
Ruth
