Centennial Celebration

Posted in Local Events

The following information regarding the Oklahoma Centennial Celebration in Shawnee was submitted by PCHEA member Beverly Mosman.  The celebration will take place next year, and it's not too early to start making plans for the event.  You may purchase your very own Centennial calendar from various locations around Shawnee or directly from Beverly.

As some of you know, I am co-chairman for the State Centennial Celebration in Shawnee, September 21-22, 2007.  Our first project is a centennial calendar.  Right now these calendars are available at the Santa Fe Depot Museum, the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, and Ells' Jewelry on Kickapoo across from Sonic.  The calendars have Cliff Lehmann prints of historic buildings in Pottawatomie County, interesting stories and trivia from the past.  The prints are suitable for framing or the calendar may be collected as a Centennial souvenir.

Each calendar sells for $10.  The proceeds will help to pay for Centennial Events in September and other projects throughout the year.  You may also purchase your calendar from me by email or calling me.

Centennial Events on September 21-22 include the Dedication of a Memorial to Louise Fluke, the designer of the Oklahoma State Flag and a monument to Centennial Pottawatomie County Towns; Santa Fe Homecoming at the Santa Fe Depot Museum, a Statehood Ball;  Centennial Queen Contest; Parade led by Native American Dancers, Family Reunion type activities in Woodland Park including a Decades of Fashion Show.  Fireworks and other entertainment will cap off the weekend.  At the Louise Fluke dedication, the Daughters of the American Revolution will be distributing Oklahoma State Flags.

The Ritz Theater will also be available for groups of students who want to present Oklahoma History skits, presentations, or musical numbers.

Projects include a Photo History Mural at the Shawnee Public Library, Coloring Books and a coloring contest in addition to Pottawatomie County CENTURY OF PROGRESS teacher's guides, and much more.

Please purchase your Centennial Calendar a.s.a.p. and make a notation to attend the Centennial events in Shawnee in September.

Thanks,
Beverly Mosman

Get Lost in the Maize

Posted in Local Events

Fall is here!  The cool, crisp weather (don't we wish!), pumpkins, scarecrows, and hayrides make good companions for a visit to a cornfield maze.  If schoolwork is getting you down and you'd rather be outside enjoying the weather, then this is your opportunity to get lost in "The Maize".  The Shawnee maze is situated on five acres and includes hayrides, farm animals, and a pumpkin patch.  Located just northeast of Shawnee off Hwy. 18 and Wolverine Road, it is open until November 4th, Thursdays through Saturdays.  For more information, visit the Maize website or call 405-401-8217.
